On a weekend, when cherry blossoms full bloom in Fukuoka, we had 3 guests from Seattle. We took them to a big shopping mall Canal City in Hakata district, and after that we headed for Fukuoka Castle Ruins to see pale pink cherry trees like a lovely spring dream. We laughed and smiled this or that and we had such a nice time together.
福岡で桜が満開となる週末に、シアトルから三人のお客さんがやって来たので、博多の繁華街のキャナルシティでお買い物をし、夕暮れ時には福岡城跡にお連れして、春の夢のように麗らかな桜を、弾けるような笑いに包まれたひととき心より堪能しました。
Along the way, I asked why they came to Japan and what they are interested in. One of the guys said he is working for a Japanese car manufacturing assembly line and he respects TOYOTA way of KAIZEN or KANBAN SYSTEM or the concept of GENBA WORKS, Japanese have high intelligence and the culture that respects one another is so wonderful. He said he came to Japan hoping for to learn many things. “For example, Japanese don’t just eat a watermelon, they make it cool in a fridge and cut into small square pieces, and the idea is very nice.”
道中、日本の何に興味があるのか、どうして日本に来たのかを聞くと「自分は日本系の自動車の組み立てラインで働いていて、トヨタ方式であるカイゼン（改善）やカンバンシステム（看板方式）やゲンバワークス（現場作業）という考え方を尊敬している。日本人の知性は高く、お互いを尊敬し合う文化は素晴らしいと思う。日本で様々なことを学びたいと思うから来たんだ。」と話してくれました。「例えばスイカにしても、日本人はそのまま食べるんじゃなくて、冷蔵庫で冷やして、食べやすいように四角に小さく切ってから食べる。そういう工夫はベリーナイスだ。」と。
I was so surprised that the way of eating a watermelon is not special at all for Japanese, but from an American viewpoint it could be such a cool example of creativity, and I felt as if I was taught that to learn from a different culture should be so pure and full of wonders.
アメリカ人の目からしたら、日本人にとってはどうという事も無いスイカの食べ方が、日本人の工夫精神の表れだと捉えられるとは正直驚きですが、それこそが異文化に感銘を受けるという事なのだと、教えて貰ったように思います。
When we parked a car, he said “Japanese people don’t just park there. You park from the back so that it will be easier when you leave.” And I said “Yes, that’s the spirit of KAIZEN!” Also, he gave me a comment when driving that it is so great that the roads and the sidewalks are so clean, and there is no trash. I said “In Japan we have a custom of community cleaning, retired senior citizens do volunteer job. They make a group and decide a day to pick up trash in a week. My late father was also picking up trash and cans in his area.” He said “I’m sorry for your loss. You had such a good father. In my job place, we also clean every day for 15 minutes after job, deciding a specific place each time. It’s a part of KAIZEN.”
駐車場で車を止める際には「日本人は車をそのまま突っ込まずに、出る時に出やすいように後ろから入れるね。」と言われ「それこそがカイゼンですよ。」と私。また、車を走らせている時に「道端に何もゴミが落ちてなくてすごい！」と言う彼には「日本では地域清掃という考え方が浸透していて、退職した人たちがコミニティーでボランティア活動をして、曜日を決めて掃除しているんですよ。私の亡くなった父も、よくゴミ拾いをしていましたよ。」と言うと「素敵なお父さんだったんですね。お悔やみ申し上げます。僕の職場でもカイゼンの一部で、毎日15分仕事の後に場所を決めて掃除をします。」と。
The conversations among the jolly 3 Americans were so peaceful and cute. My husband and I felt as if our worn-out hearts were cleansed. We chatted and laughed and chatted and laughed. We talked about Totoro and sang together “To-toro Toto~ro ♪” I was asked what else did the Totoro movie director make. I answered “Princess Mononoke, or Nausicaa and,,,” The guy said “Sailor Moon, too?” out of the blue. It was so unexpected and we burst out laughter we laughed so hard that we couldn’t talk at all for some minutes.
とっても愉快な三人組の会話は、それはそれはピースフルで日々の疲れが溜まった心が洗われるかのごとく清らかで笑いを誘い、それはそれは可愛かった。トトロの話になって「トトロ、トト〜ロ♪」と一緒に歌って、「トトロと同じ作者の作品は何ですか？」と聞かれたので「もののけ姫とかナウシカとか」と答えていると「セーラームーンは？」とあり得ない球が飛んで来たので、みんなでしばらく話が出来ないほどに腹をよじらせて笑い転げていました。
He was Japanophile and a big fan of Ichiro. On the next day, I gave him a newspaper when Ichiro retired. “I think I wouldn’t read back and you should keep this copy, rather than me.” His eyes got sparkling and said “It’s a collector’s item!” I also gave away origami Shuriken that I made which is Ninja’s weapon for their kids at home.
日本贔屓な彼は、イチローが大好きだと言うので、イチローが引退した時の新聞を取って置いたものを「もう多分読み返さないし、私が持っているよりも貴方が持ってる方がいい。」と差し上げると「コレクターズ・アイテムだ！」と目をキラッキラに輝かせて喜んでいました。また、忍者の武器、手裏剣を折り紙で拵えたものを「お子さん達にあげてね。」と渡すと、これまた喜んで貰えて嬉しかったです。
In this day and age, all the news from America are so dark and negative that the country is split apart. However, the jolly day with the 3 charming people, so cheerful and gentle, rooted and grounded in love wiped away the bad image of America. There sure are some people who never lose noble spirit, the number might be not big, but there still are. We were so blessed on the day and I’m so thankful for this encounter. Once again, I came to recognize that as a Japanese, impression toward me will be directly equal to an image of Japan. I want to hold on to have good hospitality and friendly smile whenever I come across people from abroad. It was such a warm and calm, beautiful spring day.
アメリカは社会が分断しているなど、良くない話ばかりが日本へと配信されている昨今ですが、明るく朗らかでユーモラスで優しくてスッと綺麗に芯の通った三人組とのひと時は、とかくネガティブに傾きがちな国のイメージすらも払拭してくれました。きちんと真面目に一生懸命やっている真摯な人は、確かにいるのだと、この出会いが祝福されたことを感謝します。私も日本人として、私個人に対する印象が、そのままイコールで日本のイメージになるのだと心して、外国の人々に出会う時には親切なおもてなしの心を携えていたいなと、そう思った暖かで穏やかな春の一日でした。
