Hello, everyone. After months of struggles and pains and sorrows, now that we are getting accustomed to “New Normal with Corona Virus”. And I assume not few people are longing for traveling abroad. The reality can be harsh and devastating from time to time, but your wings longing for freedom might be flying higher than ever. Now is the time to imagine and hope for something bright.

みなさん、こんにちは。数ヶ月に渡るコロナ・ウィルスとの共存生活で、これまで知らずにいた痛みを経験しながらも、「コロナと共にあるニューノーマル」に慣れてきました。そして少なからぬ人々が海外旅行を渇望していると推察します。現実は時として苦しく辛く耐え難いものですが、私たちの自由を求める翼は、かつてないほど空高く羽ばたいているのかもしれません。今こそ、想像力と明るい希望とが何よりも必要な時ではないかと思いつつ。

I’m dreaming of far-away Iceland, that I made an expedition last autumn. The success of the lecture trip was the biggest accomplishment in my whole life so far. However, aside from the project this time I want to introduce beautiful architecture in Reykjavik. I hope you can on-line-travel with me here.

私は遥か遠いアイスランド、昨年の秋に大遠征をしてきたアイスランドを夢見ています。その講演旅行の成功は、自身にとってはこれまでで最高の到達でしたが、この取り組みは別として、今回はアイスランドの首都レイキャビークの美しい建築をご紹介したいと思います。そしてオンライン旅行を私と一緒に楽しんで頂けると嬉しいです。

This cathedral, Hallgrímskirkja (Hattlegrims) is the landmark of Iceland. It was completed building in 1986 taking 45 years for construction. The cathedral can be seen anywhere from the city of Reykjavik.

この大聖堂はハットリグリムス教会、アイスランドで一番有名な建築です。1986年に45年の歳月をかけて完成しました。ハットルグリムス教会はレイキャビークの中心にあり、何処からでも見つけることが出来ます。

Can you see it here? In Reykjavik, I was walking around the lovely city freely taking a bus once in a while. Reykjavik is one of the safest cities in the world and people are so warm hearted. And I took pictures of random housings that all looked so charming and cozy.

見えますか？右奥です。レイキャビークでは、時々バスに乗ったりしつつ自由に可愛らしい街を歩き回っていました。レイキャビークは世界で最も安全な都市の一つに数えられ、人々はとても暖かいのです。そしてそぞろ歩きを楽しみながら、素敵なお家の写真をパシャパシャと撮っていました。

This is Harpa, EU modern architecture award winning concert hall in 2013 at night.

こちらはハーパ、2013年にEU現代最優秀建築賞を受賞したコンサートホールです。

This is Nordic House that is located in the premises of University of Iceland. It is where Haruki Murakami had a lecture when Iceland threw Literary Festival in 2003.

こちらはアイスランド大学の敷地内にある、ノルディック・ハウス。北欧諸国の文化交流の場です。2003年、アイスランド国際文学祭が開催された時に、村上春樹が講演をした場所でもあります。

Nordic House was designed by a world famous Scandinavian architect, Alvar Aalto. It is a well-known fact that Aalto was immensely influenced by Japan. Inside of Nordic House was like this. There are books of Nordic countries.

ノルデイック・ハウスはかの有名なスカンジナビアの建築家、アルヴァ・アールトが設計しました。アールトは大の日本びいきで、日本文化や日本建築から大きな影響を受けているというのはよく知られています。図書館には、北欧諸国の書籍が置いてあります。

And lastly, I want to share a picture of superb lamb stew that my long-time friend’s husband cooked and simmered for a whole day, welcoming for me.

そして最後にアイスランド料理をご紹介。長年の友人のご主人が私を歓迎する為にラム・シチューを1日かけて煮込み、もてなしてくださいました。

He is a wonderful chef, and we shared quality time rejoicing our reunion with my best friend of more than 20 years. Over the dinners he prepared each night, I learned that Japan is like a utopia for people in Iceland. Especially, younger generations are in love with our culture. And Japan is one of the biggest interest for them. Iceland and Japan are so far apart, but our friendship is getting stronger and stronger!

ご主人は驚くほど素晴らしい腕前のシェフでした。私たちは二十年以上もかけて培った友情とアイスランドでの再会を喜びながら、掛け替えのない時間をみんなで一緒に過ごしました。毎晩頂いた、それはそれは美味しい料理の数々に舌鼓を打ちながら、様々なことを話しました。そして日本はアイスランドの人々にとっては理想郷、ユートピアのような憧れの地なのだと知りました。特に若い世代が日本文化に対する熱量が高く、彼ら彼女らにとっては最大の関心事の一つとさえなっているのです。アイスランドと日本は地理的には遠く離れていますが、喜ばしいことに、私たちの友情は益々強くなっていっているのです。
