Happy New Year 2026! To commemorate new year, I’d like to write about Dr. Kitazato who devoted his life for preventive medicine.

2026年、あけましておめでとうございます！今日は新年を寿ぎ、予防医学に人生を捧げた北里博士を取り上げたいと思います。

We visited Kitazato Shibasaburo Museum located in Oguni, Kumamoto. Dr. Kitazato is the face of new 1,000 yen bill. In the ultimately crisp air, the shivering time in the museum was surrounded with snow and you can never experience the genuine moment if not actually making a journey.

新千円札の顔となった北里柴三郎博士、その北里博士の故郷である熊本県小国町にある記念館を訪れた。張り裂けそうに冴え渡った空気の中に佇む記念館でのひと時は、冷気の中で雪に包まれ、そこに赴かねば味わうことの出来ない経験だった。

And we spent 2 and a half hours amply. Learned the personal history, looked up 2 cedars the doctor couple planted, overlooked mountains he was seeing everyday when child, observed handmade experiment equipments and a microscope and such, and stepped into a library Dr. Kitazato donated. There was a book of my favorite Natsume Soseki and I wanted to open pages, but it is forbidden. Whole Shakespeare works translated by Futaba Teishimei and more are a pile of treasures for a literature lover. Standing on the icy floor, I was recalling myself when little seeing complete collection of world literature elegantly sitting on a glass windowed bookshelf at home.

そしてたっぷり二時間半をここで過ごした。ミニシアターでその人物像を学び、柴三郎夫妻が手植えした二本杉を見上げ、貴賓館からは博士が幼少時代に毎日見上げていた涌蓋山を眺め、北里文庫で博士が手製した亀の子シャーレなどの実験器具やゆかりの顕微鏡等の展示資料を見学し、収蔵されていた図書を見た。夏目漱石の本もありページを開いて読みたかったけれど、それは禁じられている。また、二葉亭四迷が翻訳した初版のシェークスピア全集も、文学ファンにとってはお宝の山。冷え冷えとした床に立っていると、昔実家に置いてあったガラス張りの本棚に鎮座していた世界文学全集を眺めていた、小学生の自分を思い出す。

Kitazato Shibasaburou is a medical doctor who established foundation of Japanese modern medicine, devoted whole life for preventive medicine and infectious disease studies. He was a researcher, the final candidate of the first Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine also. He had sturdy physicality and soul determined to dedicate for welfare of the public. He had unshakable conviction that studies must be beneficial for the society widely. Regarding his background, I am a layperson in medicine, so it’s regretful that I am unable to write and comprehend in detail. Even though, buying the educational manga for elementary students, I vaguely came to understand his life.

北里柴三郎は近代日本医学の礎を築いた医学博士で、予防医学と伝染病研究に生涯を捧げた医者の先生だ。第一回のノーベル生理・医学賞の最終候補にも残っていた研究者で、頑健な体を持って公共の福祉に奉仕する精神の人で、学問は広く社会の役に立ってこそという実学を重んじる人物であった。その生涯の足跡については、私は医学に関して全くの門外漢なので、十分に理解し綴る力がないのが悔やまれるところだけれど。それでも、小学生向けの学習まんがを買って読むと、北里博士の生涯が朧げながら見えてきた。

He wrote a letter for little brothers and sisters in the hometown, “If you want to accomplish a deed, having solid foundation is crucial, the foundation is lifelong learning. No matter how ambitious you are, you will never be trusted if not having academic ability. ” He taught the importance of learning. Dr. Kitazato completed studying in medical department in the University of Tokyo aged 30. He thoroughly understood that having steadfast foundation was indispensable. Unlike Dr. Mori Ohgai who was a precocious prodigy able to achieve anything within minimum distance. Dr. Kitazato had various detours and candidly accumulated knowledge and experience one by one. That led him to make a deed in the long run.

故郷の弟と妹に書いた手紙には、「大事を成そうと思うなら、基礎をしっかりと固めること、その基礎というのは生涯を通じての勉強で、どんなに志があったところで、学力のない者は人に信じてもらえない」と学びの大切さを説いていた。齢三十歳にして東大医学部を修了した北里博士は、基礎固めを盤石のものにすることの大切さが骨身に沁みていた。最短距離であらゆることに到達できた森鴎外の様な早熟な神童ではなかったからこそ、多くの寄り道をしてその道中で実に多くの事柄に真剣に向き合い、知識と経験を実直に積み重ねてきたから、のちに大事を成し遂げることができたのだ。

When cholera was epidemic in Nagasaki, Dr. Kitazato visited a segregated hospital there and collected cholera germ from feces of patients and proved that cholera was from the germ then raised awareness that it used to be mythically believed as curse, and published a thesis of Microbiology regarding public health. And his long dream came true, he studied in German from 1886 for 6 years and studied medicine of the highest peak in the world. The persevering avidness of the doctor was from desperate prayer that he wanted to save his younger siblings died when little. In Germany he published a thesis that surprised the world regarding Serum Therapy in 1890. He was bestowed Ph. D from the Japanese government.

北里博士は長崎でコレラが猛威を振るった時には、隔離病院で患者の糞便からコレラ菌を採取してコレラは細菌が原因であることを突き止め、迷信的に祟りだと信じ込んでいた人々の蒙を啓き、公衆衛生に関する細菌学の論文を発表した。そして念願叶い、1886年から六年間ドイツ留学をして世界最高峰の医学を学ぶ。その北里博士の医学の道への苛烈さは、幼い頃に亡くした弟と妹たちを救いたかったという無念の思いに突き動かされていた。ドイツでは1890年に世界を驚かせる血清療法の研究論文を発表し、日本政府から医学博士の学位を授与された。

He came back to Japan believing studies and researches are for the society not for self-satisfaction, it is scholar’s obligation to contribute for his country. He came back to Japan to improve public heath. When Pest of 90% fatality was pandemic in the world, he bravely went to Hong Kong to have research. He conducted the survey anatomized dead bodies in horrible environment, and he discovered the Pest germ first time in the world.

学問や研究は自己満足の為ではなく、人々の役に立ち社会に貢献することが学者の務めだという思いより、祖国日本の公衆衛生を改善する志とともに帰国した。その後、致死率90%とされた恐怖の黒死病が世界で大流行した1894年には、勇敢に香港へ調査に赴き、過酷な状況の中で死体を解剖してペスト菌の第一発見者となった。

And the educational manga of Dr. Kitazato, it was written in conclusion praising the dedication of medical doctors at times sacrificing their lives. On the contrary, I write here that in any field of studies, committing too much on studies is absolutely hazardous. I’m saying so to myself also. It is wrongful to sacrifice your life to develop studies. It is harmful to preach such hypocritical beauty to innocent kids. We must live along. No matter how cutting edge medical filed you are in, how big justice you have, or anticipating a fame and a deed of the mankind, you must run away all your might if sensing a risk of losing life.

そして『小学館版　学習まんが人物観　北里柴三郎』では、時に命を危険に晒すほどに研究に邁進する医学者を礼賛する内容で締め括られているのだけれど、しかし、あらゆる分野に於いて研究のやりすぎは絶対にダメだと、私は自戒も込めて書いておきたい。自らの命を落としてまで学問の発展に尽くしてはいけない。純粋な子供に向けてそういう美談を説いてはいけない。生きてこそだ。どんなに最先端で働く医療者も、どんな大義があろうとも、或いは人類初の偉業となる名誉が待ち受けていようとも、命の危険がある際は全力で逃げなくてはいけない。

Dr. Kitazato was an exceptionally tough guy, however most of us are having vulnerable soul and fragile flesh. We are repeating metabolism in the given conditions, keeping balance and sustaining life sensitively. We all work hard, but working too hard is harmful. Losing life due to overwork is a huge enemy. Staying healthy and prospering long life, and complete own work is the way it should be. The lesson I learned from Dr. Kitazato who zealously pursued medicine was quite paradoxical. In spite of that, I believe it was a precious lesson that he passed on to the coming generations.

北里博士は例外的に偉丈夫だったけれど、ほとんどの人間は弱い精神と傷つきやすい脆い肉体を持ち、そんな中でなんとかかんとか代謝を繰り返し、バランスを取りつつ生命を保っている。一生懸命頑張るのは当たり前のことだけれど、過度の精進は体に毒だ。過労死は人の大敵だ。どれだけ元気に長生きできるか、そして自らの仕事を成し遂げるかが人としての本懐だと私は思った。生命の危険をものともせず猛烈に研究に勤しんだ北里博士から得たのは、逆説的な学びだったけれど、これもまた博士が後世の者に教えてくれた貴重な教訓であることには変わらないと思っている。
