Hello. Today, I’m happy to announce good news. I’ve been focusing on the project of promoting Cool Japan for 3 and half years. I’m overjoyed that this blog was able to bear another fruit; Aya’s Cool Japan Blog has been conserved at National Diet Library, Japan as part of Web Archiving Project! It is a national project and it’s my great honor that this blog is going to be preserved semi-permanently.

みなさん、こんにちは。今日はとっても嬉しい発表があります。三年半かけて取り組んでいる“素敵な日本を世界へ発信計画” がまた一つ実を結びました。国立国会図書館のインターネット資料収集保存事業の対象として、保存公開されたのです。国の事業の一環として、半永久的にこのブログが残されてゆくことに深い感慨を覚えます。

I want to show my gratitude for everybody who has been supporting this project in various ways. Some are highlighted and some would never show up the front. I want to tell thank you to each one of you. Also, I what to appreciate enterprises and artists that gave great understanding regarding copyright issues. I started this project all by my self, but I wouldn’t have been able to reach here without your heartfelt supports. I want to give special thanks to more than 100 persons.

この活動に賛同してくださり、大小様々な形で、光の当たる場所で、また決して表には出てこない形で、私を支え続けて下さった方々、著作権処理の段階でご協力頂いた関係者各位に心よりお礼申し上げます。たった一人で始めたこのプロジェクトですが、私一人の力だけでは到底ここまで来ることは出来ませんでした。特別の感謝を伝えたい方々は、100人にものぼると思います。

Speaking of a library, I was influenced immeasurably by books that I borrowed from libraries in my childhood. And among them, my most favorite story was “Pippi Long Stockings”. I adore Pippi. I always wanted to be like Pippi. Here I want to share lines that the translator, Yuzo Othuka wrote in the afterwords.

図書館と言えば、子どもの頃に図書館で借りて読んでいた本の数々から、計り知れない影響を受けました。その中でも、何と言っても一番好きだった物語は「長くつ下のピッピ」でした。私はピッピになりたかった。訳者の大塚勇三さんがあとがきで書いていることを抜粋します。

“Pippi makes things happen that every one wishes that ‘it would be fantastic if you could’. She lives independently with a monkey and a horse, and she doesn’t even go to school. She talks about her imaginations so freely and carries out her ideas right after they come up. Since she is the strongest girl in the world, she is not afraid of any great figure. And when she finds faults with adults, she points them out one after another. But at the same time, she is far from being mean. You know how warm-hearted Pippi is by reading this story.”

「ピッピは、みんなが『こんなの出来たら素敵だな』と夢見ている事を、思いのままにやってのけます。猿と馬をつれて、たった一人で家に住み、学校にも行きません。頭に浮かぶままに空想を振りまき、思ったらすぐに行動し、何しろ世界一つよい女の子ですから、どんな偉そうな人も怖がらないし、大人におかしなところがあれば、じゃんじゃん言いまくるのです。それでいて、嫌味はちっともありません。ピッピの心がどんなに暖かいか、それはみなさんがこの本でお読みになるでしょう。」（文中のひらがなを漢字に改めた箇所あり）

Pippi is not well-behaved, she is unconventional and she can’t control what she says. However, she has zero intention to hurt others nor speak ill of someone on the back. She doesn’t mind what others would think of her.

ピッピはお行儀良くないし、型破りだし、口も悪いけれど、誰かをおとしめようだとか、嫌いな人の悪口をこっそり広げようだとか、そういう発想がありません。人にどう思われようがお構いなしです。

When Pippi’s next door friends visited her, she was spreading ginger cookie dough on the whole floor and at lightning speed she was cutting with the cutter. Then Pippi suggested to play a “things finder game”. And Pippi made the neighbor kids find “a leather covered notebook with a mechanical pencil” and “a red coral necklace”. Pippi made them speechless with surprise and joy. And she never mentioned that she hid them beforehand.

隣の子ども達が遊びに来ると、ピッピは床いっぱいに広げたショウガ入りクッキーの生地を、目にも留まらぬ早業で型抜きしていました。そして「もの発見家ごっこ」をしようと提案します。そしてこっそり前もって隠しておいた「革カバーのついたノートブックとシャープペンシル」や「赤いサンゴのネックレス」など、とびっきり素敵なものを隣の子ども達に発見させて、言葉を失うほど大喜びさせるのです。そして、ピッピ自身が仕込んでおいただなんて言いもしないのです。

I believe the sprit of Pippi that I adored in my childhood is depicted thoroughly in this context. Pippi is always free-spirit, but she gets hurt so badly when she is returned something negative after showing gentleness. But she never gives in to it. Because, Pippi is the strongest girl in the world!

私が子ども心に憧れたピッピの心とは、まさにこの箇所に凝縮されていると思います。ピッピはいつも自由ですが、優しさを差し出して、別の良くないものが返ってくると深く傷つきます。でもそんな事にへこたれてはいられません。何てったってピッピは「世界一つよい女の子」なのですから。

And my wish is this. I dearly hope that this blog could reach out former-children who have hearts of Pippi. Takashi Yanase, the author of Anpanman that has huge popularity among kinds in Japan once wrote in his book that “life is a game of making one another happy”. My little niece is my best friend forever, as we both think so hard to make each other happy always. Heart of a child is like that by nature.

そしてこのブログが、ピッピの心を持っている世界中のもと子ども達に届いてゆくものとなることが私の願いです。日本の子供達の間で絶大な人気を誇る「アンパンマン」の作者のやなせたかしさんは「人生は喜ばせごっこ」と著書に書いています。私の小さな姪っ子ちゃんは、私にとって大の親友です。それはいつもお互いがお互いの事をどう喜ばせようかと考えて、知恵をしぼっているから。子どもの心とは、本来そういうものなのです。

I pray that this blog could get to Pippi(s) who are scattered all over the world. Every day life is not an easy one, and to live means to confront with countless difficulties and hardships. However, like Pippi we can share something good with others. Not waiting for someone to give you, but by becoming someone who choose to give, we can plant seeds of hope. It is natural that you are different form others and a bit peculiar. But with your own color and with your own character, both you and I can work joyfully like Pippi!

世界中に散らばっている、ピッピ達にこのブログが届きますように。日々の暮らしは簡単なものではないし、人生は困難に満ちているけれど、ピッピのようにもらう事を待っている人よりも、良いものを分かち合う事を喜びとする人が希望の種を撒けるのだと。人と違っていてどこか風変わりなんて事は当たり前だし、そんな事を気にするよりも、自分の色で自分の個性で、あなたも私もこの世界を少しでも良いもので満たすために、ピッピみたいに喜んで働けますように！

As for my mission, I do wish that this blog can be beneficial for those who are learning Japanese and its culture diligently!

私の使命としては、このブログが日本語と日本文化を一生懸命に学んでいる人々にとって、大いなる益となりますよう心より願います。
