Hello every one. It is widely said that Murakami is not going to win the Noble Prize for Literature anymore. However, I’m a big fan of Haruki Murakami, and I become a little restless during the Nobel week every autumn. And the other day, I read an English translation of “Sputnik Sweetheart”.

みなさん、こんにちは。もうノーベル賞は獲れないという事が定説になってはいるものの、毎年秋のノーベル賞発表週間になるとソワソワと落ち着きをなくしてしまう私は、村上春樹の大ファンです。先日思い立って「スプートニクの恋人」を英語で読んでみました。

I read the original Japanese version in university about 20 years ago. But I almost forgot the content and I could enjoy the story once again. I assume this English translation was done by an English translator as it is used British English here and there and it is not American English that I’m accustomed to.

二十年前、大学生の頃に日本語の原文で読んだ内容はほとんど忘れていて、今回読み返してみても新鮮な物語として読む事が出来ました。恐らくこちらの英語版はイギリス人訳者の手によるものであるらしく、私にとって親しみのある米語ではなく、イギリス英語的な表現が多用されていました。

Murakami once answered in an interview that he tries to avoid expressions that are peculiar to Japanese culture and the nativity. He established a writing style that can be familiar for people regardless of their nationalities. When reading the English translation, I could sense the ubiquitous charm of the words that the characters speak. It is as if Murakami was a frontier of globalization in the area of literature. Same as Burger King, Uniqlo, and Nike, the signs and the symbols of Murakami literature are so ubiquitous. As my occupation is translator, I can see the works of Murakami are not too challenging to translate.

村上春樹は以前インタビューで、敢えて日本情緒が色濃くなるような文章表現は避け、世界のどこの国の人でもなじめるような文体で日本語を書いていると語っていました。実際英語の翻訳版を改めて読んでみると、登場人物の語る言葉が万国共通性という遍在性を保っているのが分かります。まるで世界中にあるバーガーキングやユニクロやナイキなどの自国性に留まらない記号の持つ先駆けを、村上春樹は文学という分野で、いち早く実践して来ていたかのような印象を受けます。翻訳者にとってはとても翻訳しやすい作家なのだと、翻訳を仕事としている私にとっては大いに頷けます。

Because of the urban writing style that has few essence of Japanese atmosphere, Murakami succeeded to become a splendid world class novelist. And he had the blue print from the beginning. How clever his foresight was. And I believe he had an intuition that he could work world wide from the beginning of his career. He was absolutely confident, I suppose.

その日本情緒を薄めた都会生活的な文体ゆえに村上春樹は世界的作家になり得たのだと思うと、当初からそのことを視野に入れていた彼は、なんと先見の明があった人なのかと思うと同時に、作家人生の初めから自分には世界規模の仕事ができるのだという自信は、絶対的な確信としてそこにあったのだとも思います。

I have strong attachment toward Japanese, so I don’t intentionally try to lessen the essence of Japanese-ness nor make it more universal when writing Japanese. But Murakami settled that restriction in himself and “tune the rhythm and find lovely chords and believe in the power of improvisation” as if he is “playing music”. If you want to play beautiful music, you need to devote yourself for practicing for many years. And the technique you acquired after spending good amount of time is sure to become an essential weapon for an artist to ask your view to the world.

私は日本語を日本語として愛しているので、敢えて日本語の手触りを薄めて世界共通語としての文体を確立させるという意識の持って行き方はしないけれど、そういう一つの制約を自分の中に設けて、「音楽を演奏する」ように「リズムを確保し、素敵な和音を見つけ、即興演奏の力を信じる」というのが村上文学の真骨頂なのかも知れません。美しい演奏をするためには相当な修練が必要であるし、またかなりの時間を費やして身につけた技術は、芸術家にとっては己の世界観を世に問う為には必須となる武器となります。

I often think that sophistication or art is not like taking a picture just in front of you. By taking a position far from the object, and wrapping up with many layers, you ought to show and express the true-being vividly. Like we have music in order to reflect your emotion that can’t be spoken. And you remember someone you loved by scenting a certain aroma. Art will soothe you and comfort you at a time like that.

よく思う事なのですが、洗練や芸と言われるものは、ただそこにあるものを写真の様にそのまま写して提示するのではなく、その像からどれだけ離れるか、或いは幾重にも包んで対象と距離を置きつつその本質性を表現し得るか、という事だと思います。いうに言われぬ感情を表現する為に音楽があり、ある香りを嗅ぐと大好きだったあの人を思い出す、という様な時に私たちは芸術によって癒されるのです。

Haruki Murakami established a writing style that is evaluated as “translated style” in Japan. In order to reach out any language on the planet, he decreased subtle nuances of Japanese nativity. And he released the small boat to the world.

村上春樹は日本において、翻訳調とも評される様な文体を確立させました。世界中のあらゆる言語に届く様に、文体の細かなニュアンスから日本の土着性を抜き取ることによって、その文章自体を小さな舟として世に送り出しました。

And I can sense it as not a well-planned strategy. Rather than that, by playing jazz music impromptu, and when you notice it turned out to be a master piece. It is thanks to the art of literature. When Murakami is in the flow of playing music of literature, it is intoxicating people, people of any language all over the world.

そしてこれは恐らく綿密に練り上げられた戦略というよりはむしろ、ジャズピアノを即興で弾きつつ、気がつけばそれが名演奏となっていたという様な芸の力によるものだと思います。流れに任せて美しい音を奏でていたら、それが人々を、あらゆる言語を使う世界中のあらゆる人々を酔わせていたのだと。

He made the power of subconscious into the universal art. I strongly believe that he is a genuinely gifted writer who is abundantly blessed by God.

その無意識の力をあまねく普遍化させるものとして昇華させて来た村上春樹は、やはり天賦の才を豊かに授けられた神に祝福された作家なのだと思います。
