Flip side theme of this blog is “to promote beautiful Japanese language to the world”. I write in both English and Japanese, but I’d be utterly glad if you notice that I endeavor myself to express in beautiful Japanese more earnestly.

このブログの裏テーマは、「美しい日本語を世界に伝えたい」というものだ。英語と日本語の二か国語で書いているけれど、実は日本語の方にこそより力点を置いているのを、読み手の方々が感じ取ってくださったら嬉しいと、そう常々思っている。

From international standard, it is nothing special that you have good command of English. English is just a tool for mutual understanding. And when a Japanese works as an interpreter or translator with a foreigner, it matters if your Japanese is excellent or not. What I want to teach to Japanese youngsters is the importance of studying hard both your mother tongue and English. It it not clever to look down on either one.

国際基準で考えたら、英語が出来るのは何も特別なことではない。英語は標準語として、共通理解の為の道具である。また、日本人が翻訳や通訳などで外国人と仕事をする場合、最も重要視されるのは、母語である日本語の運用能力である。私が日本人の若者に伝えたいこと、それは日本語も英語も一生懸命勉強してほしいということだ。どちらを軽んじてもいけないのだ。

When I was a high school student, I was dreaming of becoming a journalist and planned out for the future with my own inventive way. My high school was rigorous for students to prepare for university exams. But I created original style for learning and enjoyed the process so much. I wanted to enhance Japanese writing skills and knew that it’s worthy to summarize Asahi Shimbun news paper column “Tenseijingo” every day.

高校生の頃に、新聞記者を夢見て一人で色々と工夫して将来に備えていた。通っていた高校は進学校で、授業は厳しかったけれど、自分の流儀でする学びに大きな価値を見出して、一人楽しく勉強していた。

Technically I used to cut & paste each article, give a title, summarize, and list up unknown Chinese characters on a notebook. I continued the practice for a year and it was so fun to have my Japanese teacher checked it. Through the exercises, I acquired a sense of writing, developing rhythm and melodies in each context. I believe it’s something that can be related to a pianist playing music.

日本語の文章力をあげるには朝日新聞のコラム「天声人語」の要約が良いと何処かから聞いて、要約帳に記事を切り貼り、題を考え、内容を要約し、知らない漢字を書き出すという日本語修行を一年ほど続けた。それを国語の先生に添削して貰うのが楽しかった。その頃に体得した、日本語を書く際のリズムの整え方や抑揚のつけ方のようなものは、ピアニストが音を奏でる感覚に通じるのではないかと思っている。

However, in this day and age Japanese is facing with a challenging situation. Foreign words and Japanese English are flooded in the language. It is even transforming Japanese. Katakana word is describing a foreign word with just sounds without translating into Japanese. For example, shoes is “kutsu” in Japanese but it is expressed as “shuuzu” instead. I don’t think it’s cool to say “shuuzu” instead of “kutsu”. Japanese are neglecting our own language. It is critically problematic.

けれど今、日本語の中にカタカナ語や和製英語がおびただしく流入してきており、日本語そのものが変容してきている。靴をシューズと言った方が格好が良いのか、簡単な日本語表現もカタカナ語で置き換えられる事が多々あり、日本人が日本語を粗末にしているのだ。由々しき事態である。

I’m a linguist and using English for my job since freshman of university, therefore I’m confident that my English is fairly good. However, katakana words are not English and often the times I have no idea what is being implied. If I don’t get a clue, I assume others would have much more difficulties. And katakana words make things worse and more mysterious since it is used according to Japanese grammar. For example, it would be like this,,,,

私は語学を使う仕事を大学一年の頃からずっとしているので、世間一般よりも英語に精通しているという自負がある。しかし、カタカナ語は表記や音からしても英語ではないので、一体なんのことなのか分からない時も多い。私が分からないのだから、他の人はもっと分からないのではないか。カタカナ語をより謎多きものにしているのは、カタカナ語が日本語の文法に則って使われるところにある。例えば、、、

“I tooku with him iesutadei berri intarestingu. It was very ekisaiting and emooshonaru. He has hai supirito.”

「イエスタデーに彼とベリーインタレスティングなトークをして、めっちゃエキサイティングでエモーショナルだったよ。彼、スピリットがハイなの。」

This is more of cryptograph. Hard to say it is Japanese or English, maybe neither. People who use lots of katakana words in Japanese conversation intend to trick others or presumably they want to be considered cool?

これはもう暗号としか言いようがない。日本語とは言い難いし、ましてや英語でもない。カタカナ語を多用する人の心理は、人のことを煙に巻きたいとか、カッコイイと思われたいとか、そういう類のものではないか。

Although, I recognize the fact that it is a world wide phenomenon that any number of language systems are in the crisis of being destroyed because of flux of English. It is also true to languages that I have learned: Bahasa Malaysia, Bahasa Indonesia, and Korean. I love languages so deeply and the current trend makes me depressive. Aghhhh, diversities of languages are collapsing. Small and subtle whisperings hidden in the universe are vanishing. Is it a destiny that fragile and delicate intangible beauty are vulnerable in front of mighty power? Is it what a history is about? Oh, is it really so?

しかし、英語の流入により言語形態が崩れてきているのは、実は世界的な現象なのだ。私がこれまで学んできたマレーシア語、インドネシア語、韓国語にも同様に見られる傾向なのだ。言葉を言語を愛してやまない私の心は、益々暗澹とする。あー！多様性を持つ言葉の崩壊が進む。森羅万象に宿る、小さくてささやかな息遣いがかき消されてしまう。強大な力の前には、儚くもろい、けれどしみじみとした情緒があるものは絶え果てるさだめにあるのか。それが歴史の流れにある必然というものなのか。ああ、嗚呼！

However, never stop there. I might be powerless, but I made up my mind to preserve the beauty of Japanese as much as I can. While using English to promote the charm of Japan to the world, I desire to spread the beauty of Japanese as well. There is no such manual nor compass. But I draw an intellectual world wide map by myself, decide a direction to pursue, use utmost wisdom, be creative as much as I can, and I strive to make the future map come true. Believing along the journey not small number of people would stand by me…

いや、しかしである。そこで止まってはいけない。例え小さな力でも、私は日本語の美しさを守り伝える為の活動をできる限りしていくのだと、そう心に誓っている。英語を使って世界に日本の魅力を伝えながら、それと同時に美しい日本語を広めて行くのだ。手引きも羅針盤もない航路に、世界大の知の地図を描き出し、方向を割り出し、できる限りの知恵を絞り、創造性を働かせて、未来図を現実のものへと昇華させて行くのだ。そしてその道のりにおいて、決して少なからぬ人々がこの活動に心を添えてくださると信じている。
