After a long day, I had a night out in downtown Kyoto alone. Left subway Sanjo station, went across Kamo river, and got to the city center. Night time Kamo river is a little coquettish. Somehow friendly and tender, but polished and classy as well. Along the riverside, people went by relaxingly and enjoying the cool air. It was like festive atmosphere. Felt as if I could hear festive flutes playing from afar. In Kyoto, it seems quiet and composed manner is valued, something in rush and direct and loud is not preferred. Some kind of unwritten rule is there.

長い一日の終わりに、京都の街を一人歩く。地下鉄三条の駅を出て、鴨川を渡り繁華街へ出る。夜の鴨川は色っぽい。どこか親しげで優しくて、それでいて垢抜けしている。河川敷では人がゆっくりと行き交い、河原で夕涼みをしている。夜の京都はお祭りの様だった。どこか遠くからお囃子の笛の音色が聞こえて来そうな雰囲気だった。おっとりとはんなりとしているものが美しいと、性急で直截的で騒々しいものは野暮であると、そういう不文律がありそうな街、京都。

The style of 1200 years ancient capital is intangible and impossible to comprehend for an outsider, there exists some area that stranger can’t reach out. But it is enticingly and irresistibly attractive. I went to university in Tokyo, but if I had chosen to go one in Kyoto, my youthful time would have been completely different and I must be totally a different person by now.

1200年の都の流儀は、よそ者には理解することは殆ど出来ないけれど、きっとその懐には入っていけない領域が確かに存在しているのだけれど、それでも否応なしにその魅力に惹きつけられてしまう。私は大学は東京に行ったが、もしも京都の大学に通っていたら、その青春はまるで違ったものになっていて、今の自分とは全く違う人間になっていただろう、などと考える。

Bought bean rice crackers at FunaHashiya at the riverside of Kamo river. It is a long-established store since 1884. However, the tradition of almost 140 years could be nothing compered with the 1200 years of Kyoto history. In the shop there were more than 100 kinds of rice crackers, and it was so beautiful and classy. You will be so pleased if someone gives you this snack in summer or winter gift season.

鴨川沿いにあった、あられおかきの老舗店、船はしやで豆菓子を買った。ここは明治十七年(1884年）創業とのこと。140年近い伝統があっても、京都1200年の歴史からすればほんの最近となるのかもしれない。店内には百種類以上のあられやおかきや豆菓子が並び、その店構えも情緒がある。お中元やお歳暮にこんなものを頂いたら、それは嬉しいだろうなと思う。

After checking other restaurants, I decided to go in a revolving sushi place. Since I was craving for Japanese food. Maybe Kyoto was whispering me “Treasure the Japanese tradition”. I was thinking that Kyoto is not facing with the ocean, but after making sure a map I learned Tango area is facing with the Sea of Japan. It is automated revolving sushi restaurant, but the chef made sushi in front of me when ordered. People abroad must experience this place when visiting Japan. Since it is the prodigious invention of Japan.

夕ご飯は色々と歩いて物色した結果、回転寿司にした。和食がどうしても食べたくなったのだ。これも京都が無言のうちに私に語りかけていたのかもしれない。「和の伝統を大切にしなさい」と。京都には海がないと思っていたが、地図帳を見て確認したら、丹後の方は日本海に面していた。回転寿司とは言え、板前さんに注文すると目の前でお寿司を握ってくれるので、海外の方が日本に来た際には、この感嘆すべき発明、回転寿司を是非とも経験して欲しい。

After eating sushi, I didn’t feel like going back to the hotel straight. Then strolling around Sanjo shopping arcade. The atmosphere of shopping arcade is so nice. I walked in shopping arcades in Nagasaki, Sasebo, Kumamoto, Hakata, Kokura, Ohita, Ohsaka, Kobe, and Kochi when traveling. Whenever finding a shopping arcade, I feel reminiscent and nostalgic. Somehow feel welcomed.

お寿司を食べて、そのままホテルへ帰るのが勿体無くて、三条のアーケード商店街をブラブラする。商店街という風情が、また良い。長崎、佐世保、熊本、博多、小倉、大分、大阪、神戸、高知、と旅行に行く先々でアーケード商店街を歩いた。観光や買い物に行った先に商店街があると、何故か懐かしくなってホッとする。

There is some warmth rooted in the daily life that one can’t find in a newly built shopping mall. I love the sentiment like aroma and smoke of eel roasting floating next by a scent of incense shop, and some classical music is sounding from a CD shop. That kind of atmosphere is so dear to me. And people go by enjoy walking along the street and not in rush to the destination is also nice. I love embracing the feelings.

新しく出来たショッピングモールにはない、日々の暮らしに根付いた情感が漂っているのだ。ウナギを焼く匂いが煙と一緒に流れて来るお店の隣から、お香の香りが漂っている様な、そしてその側のCD屋さんからクラシック音楽が流れて来る様な、そういうものがとても良い。道行く人も、目的地に向かってまっしぐらという風情ではなく、のんびりとそぞろ歩きを楽しんでいて、その様子に趣を感じるのだ。

Firstly I was thinking of having some coffee, but I was induced to go in this cafe mesmerized by these elaborate parfait food samplings. It is a coffee shop named Karafuneya Coffee, but here I must order parfait not coffee.

食後にコーヒーを飲もうかと思ったけれど、飾り窓の幾つも並んだ精巧なパフェの食品模型に吸い込まれる様にしてこのお店へ。からふね屋珈琲という喫茶店だが、ここでは勿論、珈琲ではなくパフェを食べるべきだ。

The showcase was absolutely fascinating. Food sampling industry is originated in Japanese craftsmanship. And for craftsmen, who made these parfait one by one must have felt challenging but so rewarding. It is no doubt that making something from scratch is worth endeavoring in any field, using your hands, being creative and inventive, surveying in the details, and having trail making countless times.

これは本当に圧巻の並びだった。食品模型は日本発祥のモノ作りの分野だが、一つ一つを精巧に作り上げる職人の方にとって、このお店のパフェを作るという仕事は、とてもやり甲斐があっただろうと想像する。手を動かして、創意工夫を凝らして、細かいところを調査して、何度も試作を重ねて、そうやってものをゼロから作り上げるという仕事は、どんな分野であれ面白いに決まっている。

Gazing in the menu for quite a while and I ordered caramel milk tea yogurt parfait. The balance of sweetness and sourness was perfect. There were foreign customers and asking a question in English to the clerk, but they were unable to communicate. Like always, I did an interpretation for them quickly. Later I was thanked by the shop clerk. Felt good that I did something helpful.

メニュー表と長いこと睨めっこをして、キャラメルミルクティーヨーグルトパフェを注文した。甘さと酸っぱさの塩梅が誠によろしい。海外からのお客さんが英語でお店の人に質問していて、話が通じていなかったので、いつもの様にすっと助け舟を出して通訳をする。その後でお店の方にお礼を言われ、役に立ったと思い嬉しくなる。

When I go abroad, I am also helped by the locals countless times. Those small kindness make the impression of the country so good. Once, I asked how to ride a tram in Germany to an elderly lady. She spoke German only but so kindly helped us. “To Heidelberg castle, you take this. Where is your hotel? Ok that one there. So remember this scenery and be sure to be back here. Remember this number 23, 23 don’t make a mistake.”

私も海外で困っていたときに、何度も通りすがりの地元の人に助けられている。そういう小さな親切でその国の印象はとても良くなるものだ。一度、ドイツの路面電車の停留所で、初老の女性に乗り方を聞いた。その方はドイツ語しか話さなかったけれど、「ハイデルベルグ城へはこれに乗るのよ。あなたのホテルはどこ？あそこなのね。そしたら、この場所の景色を覚えておいて、この番号の23を覚えておくのよ。23、よ。そうしてここに間違えずに帰って来るのよ。」と、とても親身になって教えてくださった。

Even though I studied German before visiting, scarcely I can speak it. But perfectly I was able to understand what she said. I wonder how she is doing by now. I recall the old town of Heidelberg, the oldest university town of Germany. I was associating Kyoto with Germany.

行く前に勉強したとは言え、私はドイツ語が殆ど話せないのに、言ってあることは全て理解出来たという経験をした。あの方は元気にしておられるだろうか。ドイツ最古の大学街であった、ハイデルベルグの古い町並みを今、懐かしく思い出す。京都からドイツへと連想がつながって行く。

Kyoto is the old capital, and Heidelberg is also the old town. The time spending at each place is one of a kind.

京都は古都、ハイデルベルグも古い街。それぞれの場所で過ごす時間は、とても美しい。

Kyoto at night time was so lovely.

京都の夜はこうして更けて行った。
