Hi there! How are you doing? Continuing from the last two articles. I want to share my trip to Izumo Shrine in Shimane prefecture.

みなさん、こんにちは。再び山陰旅の続きをお届けします。島根と言えば出雲大社が有名です。

We got to the Japan famous Izumo Shrine just before the sunset. And we strolled around the vast premises.

夕暮れ時にやっと辿り着いて、広い境内を散策して本殿へ。

The huge straw rope is a symbol of purity and it is believed to be dividing evil from the sublime.

大ぶとのしめ縄は流石です。

I’m a Christian so I didn’t pray there, yet you can sense that they have very special atmosphere. The ion from the woods is so thick and I can feel something spiritual. I can tell that people back in the days translated this indescribable aura into something holy. In Japan it is believed that there are eight million gods in the nature. A cow and a horse were enshrined also.

私はクリスチャンなのでお参りはしませんが、森のイオンが濃く空気が霊気を伴っているようで、この地が神話の里となった理由が素肌を通して感じられます。牛や馬も祀られていて、八百万の神信仰が息づいています。

こちらは出雲大社を背にして振り返ったところ。

You can see a big white torii gate on the back. Starbucks just in front of Izumo Shrine was traditional Japanese style. It matches the district perfectly.

かなたにも白い大鳥居が見えます。大社の前にあったスタバは純和風建築で、街並みに綺麗に溶け込んでいました。

Koizumi Yakumo, (Lafcadio Hearn) Greek born English man who studied Japanese folk tales and traditional ghost stories was a famous Japanologist and a writer who lived in Shimane prefecture. Tottori is famous for ghost manga “Gegege No Kitaro”. Seeing is believing. If you go visit there, you can understand the background history and the special atmosphere that produced such cultures. I learned that there are so many places and things that I don’t know in Japan. Japan is so big and deep and mesmerizing. I’m so thankful that I got this opportunity to visit Shimane and Tottori, Sanin District.

ラフカディオ・ハーン、小泉八雲の「怪談」を育んだ島根や、ゲゲゲの鬼太郎を産んだ鳥取の裏日本独特の陰りを持つ雰囲気は、実際目で見てその場所に身を置いて初めて感じ取れるものがあると思います。百聞は一見に如かず。今回、裏日本、山陰を旅して日本はまだまだ奥深いということを学べて本当に良かったです。勉強すべき事が沢山あるということは、なんと幸せなことでしょう。この島根、鳥取を巡るロード・トリップに行けたことを心から感謝します。
