Here’s an official announcement. The project I’ve been tackling on since 2015 for more than 8 years, writing and lecturing Japanese culture in Japanese and English bilingual is officially named New Japanography; Japanography in short. One of my supervisors in graduate school named it. (Regarding Japan) Japano + (writing) graphy = Japanography. -graphy means a type of art or science, a method of producing images, a form of writing or drawing. (reference to Oxford ADVANCED LEARNER’S Dictionary 7th edition)

今回、正式発表があります。2015年から8年越しで独自に取り組んで来た、日本文化を日本語と英語で綴り講義するという活動への取り組みに、正式名称がつきました。それは、New Japanograohy、略してジャパノグラフィーです。大学院の指導教官の先生の一人が命名して下さいました。日本に関するJapano＋記述graphy が合わさってジャパノグラフィー、グラフィーには記述法、表現法、記録形式、記述学、筆記法、という意味があります。（プログレッシブ英和中辞典（第5版）参照）

The name was proposed when my 2 supervisors and other seminar members and I were discussing on my project. I’ll reflect upon the exhilarating intellectual moment that became one of my milestone from time to time. And the other supervisor encouraged me “You’ve got to talk about your dreams a lot. Many people will give you chances in various occasions. ” Furthermore, he proposed me an amazing interview and introduced me to an eminent person.

二人の指導教官の先生方と他のゼミ生の皆さんと一緒に、私の取り組みについて討議する中で、提案されたジャパノグラフィーという言葉。そのジャパノグラフィーという名前が付けられた、自分に取っては歴史的瞬間とも言えるべきゼミの一コマでの知的興奮を、私はこれから先、折に触れて思い出すことでしょう。もう一人の先生は「夢はどんどん語ったほうがいい。いろんな人が色んな所でチャンスをくれる様になる。」と言って励まされ、著名な方へのインタビューの提案されて、私のことをご紹介くださいました。

I’ve been waiting for the timing to announce the name of Japanography, and now is the timing. There are other projects of introducing Japanese culture by the government or other groups. And I must give evidence for how my project is different from them. And I must define what my originality is. Exemplifying in concrete and analyzing, I persevere my original research by conducting compare and contrast with historical Japanese culture dissemination and my own project.

ジャパノグラフィーの名称を発表するタイミングを待っていましたが、今こそが発表の時だと思い、今回初めて公にします。日本文化を書いて紹介するという取り組みには、政府のものや各種団体の取り組みなどこれまでにも各種ありましたが、それらのものと何処がどの様に違うのか、そしてジャパノグラフィーの独自性は何であるのか、具体的な例を示しつつ細かい検証をして、歴史的な日本文化発信と自身の活動の比較を分析しつつ、独自の研究を進めています。

This ©️ Aya’s Cool Japan Blog that led to the birth of Japanography is recognized its value by the country of Japan and it’s been preserved and opened by Web Archiving Project of the National Diet Library, Japan (WARP) since 2020. Uploaded 229 articles so far. It is the very first bilingual blog that was registered that is writing Japanese culture.

The summit I want to achieve is severely steep and high, however I’m completely absorbed in the huge project and keep working diligently day after day, with guts and grit. And the other day, I went to Tokyo again to attend the seminar of graduate school. The hotel I stayed was in Tsukiji. And very good friend from university who’s been supporting my project from day one came to see me. And from the evening to night, we hung around Tsukiji and Tsukishima so excitedly like we got back to young gals. Beautiful time indeed.

これから登りたいと思う山の頂は限りなく高く険しく、けれど心愉しく夢中になって、来る日も来る日も一人でウンウンと唸りながら大きな挑戦を続けています。そして先日、再び東京ゼミ旅に行って参りました。旅の宿は築地のホテルに。このブログ活動を、全くの初期段階から応援し続けてくれている大学時代の良き友が、ホテルに来てくれて、夕暮れから夜にかけて一緒に築地と月島歩きをし、大学生の頃のノリに戻って、キャッキャ言い合いながら、二人でそれは美しい時間を過ごしました。

We both came to know each other through a volunteer work of Youth Ship for foreign exchange in the late 90’s. And our university days was all about international exchange. Our major of a minor language of South East Asia, participating in a Malaysian speech contest held by the Embassy of Malaysia, practicing Aikido with Taiwanese exchange students, teaching Japanese to exchange students, volunteer guide as an interpreter for foreign youth invited by the government program, backpacker trip to South East Asia, and the fashion of my friend back in the days, we chatted.

私たちは青年の船のボランティアを通して90年代後半に知り合い、私たちの大学時代はいつも国際交流と共にありました。東南アジアの少数言語を専攻した共通点、マレーシア大使館主催マレーシア語弁論大会に出たこと、合気道を台湾人の留学生と一緒にしていたこと、留学生に日本語を教えていたこと、招聘された海外の青年たちに東京観光通訳案内をしていたこと、東南アジアへのバックパッカー旅、あの頃していた友人のファッション。

She was marveled and glad for my memory that I can still recall so many things clearly in detail. To have a wonderful friend that spent youthful time together is one of a kind, embracing so dearly.

何でもかんでも事細かに覚えている私の記憶力に、友人は驚きつつも喜んでくれて、若き日々を一緒に過ごした友の存在は、本当に掛け替えなのない、愛おしいものです。

Youngsters from all over the world gathering up in Tokyo from late 90’s to early 2000s, we encountered and farewelled. Deep and dense extraordinary stories, crazy hilarious talks form abroad, and sorrowfulness that was inevitable for our youth. The unrepeatable youth that never come again and the treasure box of bitter sweet memories in my heart that I look into at times. And all the youngsters I spent precious time with dispersed to all parts of the globe and now that they contribute to the world. By thinking so, I’m reassured with something beautiful.

90年代半ばから2000年初頭の東京で、一期一会の様に出会った世界中から集まって来た若者たち。熱く語った濃く深いマニアックな話、お腹を抱えた笑った海外の小咄ネタ、そして若いということに宿命づいていた切ない悲しみ。もう二度と戻ってはこない一回きりの青春の思い出という、時々開けてみる心の中にある宝物の箱。そして出会って一緒に時を過ごした彼ら彼女らは、世界各地に散って行き、それぞれに良い仕事をして貢献する立場になっているだと思うと、とても感慨深いものが押し寄せて来ます。

And in Tokyo, I happened to come across great news. I exchanged a business card with a lecturer of Kyoto Seika University. And I said when I had a lecture in high school in Iceland in 2019, I introduced Kyoto Seika University to the students. And the lecturer told me there was an exchange student form Iceland last year. Iceland is a small country and I met most of the students who were studying Japanese there. So the tiny seed I planted sprouted up. So glad to know that.

そして東京では、全く思いがけなかった素敵なことがありました。ゼミで初めてお会いして名刺交換をさせて頂いた京都精華大学の先生とお話をして、2019年にアイスランドの高校で講演をした時に、京都精華大学のことを紹介したということを告げました。すると去年、アイスランドから留学生が来ていたとのこと。アイスランドは小さな国で、日本語を学んでいる学生たちには殆ど会って来ているので、あの時伝えたことが芽を出したのだと、私も種まきが出来ているのだと、嬉しくなりました。

The photos are taken on the bridge between Tsukiji and Tsukishima over Sumida river named Kachidoki bashi. It’s a famous location for shooting dramas and movies from Japan. And Tokyo Tower on the back. Praying Japanography that I’m making would also bridge Japan and the world.
