Paid a visit to Hello Kitty Exhibition, celebrating her 50th anniversary. Since childhood, little Kitty was always there when noticed. She was hiding secretly, or showing smile looking at me, or coming closer and groaning comfortably. She was there nonchalantly as if nothing.

生誕50周年を記念するキティちゃんの、ハローキティ展へ行って来た。子猫のキティちゃんは、私たちが子供の頃から気づいたらいつもどこかにコソッと隠れていたり、顔を見せて笑ったり、近寄ってきては喉をゴロゴロさせて甘えたりしながら、暮らしの中に当たり前の様にいた。

She was saying Hello! a bit shyly, stayed there in a Kawaii cute manner. So I didn’t realize her awesomeness. And I came to understand her as a special kitten when I wrote Master’s thesis and established Japanography. It was such a privilege that I was able to conduct an interview regarding Hello Kitty, and made a theory of Japanese Kawaii connecting with the characteristics of Japanography.

気がつけばハロー！と優しくはにかみ、そこに静かに可愛らしく佇んでいたので、キティちゃんの凄さに私はほとんど気づかずにいた。そんなキティちゃんのことを特別な存在として捉える様になったのは、ジャパノグラフィー®️ 確立の修士論文を書いたことがきっかけだ。大変光栄なことに、キティちゃんに関するインタビューが取れ、日本発のカワイイをジャパノグラフィー®️ の特色の一つとして論にまとめることができたのだ。

When I was a little girl, I lived along uniting with Sanrio, therefore it was utterly an overwhelming blessing that I was able to feature Sanrio and Hello Kitty while I was yielding Japanography devoting my whole life. Embracing the little girl’s heart of mine and soaking in the Kawaii gentle atmosphere, I keep holding undying passion to contribute for peace. I believe that seeds planted when little has grown up taking good amount of time.

子供の頃、サンリオと一体化して生きていた私にとって、人生を賭けて作ったジャパノグラフィー®️ でサンリオとハローキティのことを取り上げることが出来たのは、大きな祝福でもあった。だから、その可愛い優しい雰囲気に浸っていた子供の頃の心のまま、私も何か平和について貢献したいと言う思いを持ち続けているのは、幼い心に蒔かれた種が時を経て大きく成長したことでもあるのかも知れない。

Nonetheless, Kitty chan is now a 50 year old big girl. She survived for half a century. Then she can’t be injure-less. She must have faced with mean merciless attitude, and even cruelties. She is a well known celebrity and anyone recognizes her, so there must have been countless misunderstandings. She must have been hurt devastatingly as well. Even though, Hello Kitty never stops being Kitty chan, never loses her identity. She keeps saying, “Let’s get along well, cherish your father and mother, and embrace your friends.”

とは言え、キティちゃんは50歳だ。半世紀も生きていれば、当然無傷ではいられないし、いろんな人の意地悪や残酷や無慈悲にも晒されて来ただろう。世界中に名が知れ渡る有名人になっているからには、言い知れぬ誤解も受けただろうし、深くつんざく痛みで心えぐられる経験もしただろう。それでも、キティちゃんはキティちゃんであることをやめない。みんな仲良く、お父さんとお母さんを大切に、友達を大切に、というメッセージを下ろすことはない。

Or without intention, Kitty chan might have hurt others. There could be someone who loathes Kitty chan and some could even grudge her. Or Kitty chan might have faced with crisis to be sent away to public health center to wipe away stray cat.

もしかしたら、気づかぬうちにキティちゃんが人を傷つける側に回ったことがあるかも知れない。キティちゃんのことを大嫌いで恨みを持っている人だっているかも知れない。捨て猫なんていらない、と言う人に危うく保健所送りにされかけたかも知れない。

In spite of all difficulties, Kitty chan never throws away her principle of everyone getting along well. There should be negative dark emotion in Kitty chan’s heart. She is sure to have someone she will never forgive. And she might secretly wants to revenge. Even though, she never takes those measures. That’s why Kitty chan is Kitty chan. One can never give big impact on the world if there is no strong and unshakable will that overcame harsh and piercing trials.

それでも、キティちゃんはみんな仲良く！と言う信念を曲げることはない。キティちゃんの心の中には当然、ドス黒い感情だってあるはずだ。絶対に許せない存在はいるだろうし、復讐だってしたい程に憎い相手だっているだろう。けれど、そういう手段を取らない所がキティちゃんがキティちゃんである所以なのだ。試練を乗り越えた強い意志がなければ、世界に大きな影響を与えることなど出来る訳がないのだから。

Kitty chan lived along 50 years. She lived 3 times more than regular cat. She is over 300 years old if human. That’s astonishing. She is astonishing yet she looks nothing. While mouth is not drawn on Kitty chan, and it represents that rather than insisting her opinion, she stays there beside you listening to you attentively. When she goes abroad, Kitty chan turned into tartan check in UK, or even purple Kitty. She tunes in with others feeling. Kitty chan is like a super girl healer.

50年生きて来たキティちゃん。普通の猫の三倍ぐらい生きて来たことになる。人間で言うと300歳以上だ。すごいな。すごいのに、いつも普通の顔をしてる。そして、キティちゃんには口が描かれていない。それはキティちゃんが自分の主張をするよりも、傾聴の姿勢でいつもそばにいてくれることの表れだ。そしてキティちゃんが海外へ行く時には、イギリスではタータンチェックになったり、紫キティになったりと、相手の気持ちに合わせてくれる存在なのだ。キティちゃんは治療者でもあるのだ。

Kitty chan is an international leader of Japan playing a role of SDGs image character for United Nations. Nevertheless, she loves Japanese culture so deeply and dearly as well as having fondness in foreign culture. She hides in Edo period (1603-1868) Ukiyoe wood block print, she leaps over the time zone of 200 years effortlessly. New 1,000 yen bill note is printed Katsushika Hokusai’s masterpiece , <<Kanagawa Oki Namiura>>. And Kitty chan is rowing a boat in the gigantic waves. Nothing is impossible for Kitty chan.

キティちゃんは国連のSDGsのイメージキャラクターになったりしている日本きっての国際派だけれど、海外への想いに負けない程に、日本文化を深く強く愛してもいる。江戸時代の浮世絵の中に紛れ込んだり、200年の時間軸だってひらりと飛び超えて見せたりするのだ。新千円札には、葛飾北斎(1760-1849) の傑作である<<神奈川沖浪裏>>が印刷されているけれど、キティちゃんは、あれ？！と気づいたらザブンと荒波をかき分ける船頭さんになっていたりする。キティちゃんに不可能なんてないのだ。

Myriads of things are in bad terms, war and split and starvation and more. Then laughter is significant as lubricating oil to melt away wrinkles tenderly when our heart is getting stiff. Yes, Kitty chan has great magical power to make people smile.

戦争や分断や飢餓、世の中は仲良くないことが多いからこそ、笑いが大切な心の潤滑油になって、私たちの固くなりかけた心を柔らかく溶かしてくれる。そう、キティちゃんは見る人を笑顔にするすごい魔法の力を持っているのだ。

But what is the magical power? I bet it must be something that each one of us foster somewhere deep in our mind. That’s why we love Kitty chan so very much. And we adore her and desire to become like her.

でも、その魔法の力ってなんだろう。きっとそれは、みんなが心の深いところに大切に持っているものなんだろうな。だからみんな、キティちゃんが大好きで、キティちゃんみたいになりたいって憧れているんだろうな。
