Today, I’d like to write about children and reading. Always believing that education is hope, and I wan to to write about the rich world that learning enhances with my memories of childhood. In this world that hope is getting scarce, reminiscing happy childhood can be good news for many of grown-ups.

子供と読書について、今日は書いてみたい。常々、教育は希望だと思っていて、学ぶということから広がってゆく豊かな世界について、自身の幼少の頃の思い出も一緒に綴ってみることにする。この希望が少なくなって来た世界にあって、子供の頃の幸福な思い出を心に浮かべることは、きっと多くの大人たちにとって何かの福音になるのではないかと思ったりもしつつ。

The book I pick up is “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” written by Lewis Carroll, illustrated by John Tenniel, first published in 1865. One of the master pieces of English Children’s Literature, and it’s been kept widely read all over the world. I assume regarding Alice, there’s some kind of hidden nostalgia that touches many people’s heartstrings. Embracing sweet memories, I keep on writing.

今回取り上げるのは、1865年に初版が出た「不思議の国のアリス」ルイス・キャロル著、ジョン・テニエル画。イギリスの児童文学で、世界中で読み続けれらている名著であり、アリスに関しては多くの人の郷愁を呼ぶ何かが隠されているのではないかと思い、テニエルの懐かしの挿絵に胸が少しキュンとなりながら書き進めて行きたい。

When in elementary school, I was very interested in foreign culture, partly because I had an American friend. I was so curious and fond of listening to English that is spoken at her home. Sometimes I picked some words and mimicked speaking.

小学生の頃、アメリカ人の幼馴染みがいたことも関係して、外国文化に対して興味津々だった。その幼なじみの家で話されている英語を聞くのが大好きだったし、真似して聞き齧りの言葉を話してみたりもしていた。

Mother was so avid when it comes to education, and borrowed English picture books from a library. Every summer and winter when father had a bonus, mother took me to a big bookstore in a metropolis and we spent hours to pick up English books to read. And every day after dinner, I used to read those books with her. They were English Children’s Literature and American Sesame Street. I can still recall those good old books and illustrations that something foreign was so fascinating. And I still keep many of those books neatly.

母が教育に関して熱心だったので、英語の絵本を図書館から借りて来たり、父の会社から夏と冬のボーナスが出ると、大きな街の紀伊國屋書店の洋書売り場へ連れて行ってもらい、長い時間をかけて一緒に読む本を選んだ。そして毎晩、母と一緒に英語の本を読んでいた。読んだのはイギリスの児童文学やアメリカのセサミストリート。今でもその内容や、異国趣味がもの珍しくてよく見入っていた挿絵のことを覚えている。そしてその多くの本を今も大切に持っている。

Reading back “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland”, tears come up with some sentiment. Since I sense an illusion that I become a 7 year old girl and wanders in wonderland. 7 years old of myself was conceited and curious, much like Alice, but grasping the world very vaguely. Things around me were so ambiguous and not certain, I was million years away from clever and sharp.

「不思議の国のアリス」を読み返すと、今でも鼻の奥が少しツンとする。自分が七歳の女の子になった様な気持ちになって、本当に不思議の国に迷い込んでしまっているのではないかと錯覚してしまうのだ。七歳の頃の自分も、おしゃまで生意気で好奇心が強く、けれどぼんやりとしか世界を認識出来ていなかった。いろんなものが曖昧模糊として輪郭がぼやけていて、頭脳明晰というものからは何万年も離れていた。

Whenever seeing the illustrations of Alice, I was feeling like I also became Alice. Nonsense world of the nonsense was so familiar and something so intimate.

それでも、アリスの描かれた挿絵を見ると、自分もアリスになったかの様に思っていた。ナンセンス、つまりはヘンテコリン、そのヘンテコリンな世界がとても近いものに感じられていたのかもしれない。

I used to have a soap of Alice made in UK, as one of my treasures. When opening the box of illustrated Alice that was certainly adorable yet a bit odd and peculiar, there comes a fragrant soap wrapped by a thin ivory colored paper. Never had an intention to use it for washing hands, I used to open the box and peel off the thin paper, and breathed in the soap aroma every day.

イギリス製のアリスの石鹸を持っていた。それは宝物の一つで、アリスの絵が描かれた、確かに可愛いのだけれど少し奇妙な雰囲気の箱を開けると、象牙色の薄紙に包まれて、アリスの全身を象ったいい匂いがする石鹸が入っていた。とても手を洗うのに使う気にはなれず、毎日の様にその箱を開けて、薄紙をはいで、石鹸の匂いを吸い込んでいた。

When in junior high school, “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” was used for English textbook. There might be some people still remember the song of Humpty Dumpty, listened in the English class. Learning English was to open up the door of Wonderland and step inside and have an exciting adventure for me as a little girl. It was nothing but an enchanting experience. I didn’t recognize in those days, but to study a foreign language was inseparable with encountering with different culture.

中学生になると、「不思議の国のアリス」は英語の教科書にも取り上げられていた。ハンプティ・ダンプティの歌を授業中に聴かせてもらったことを覚えている人もいるだろうか。英語を学ぶことは、幼い自分にとっては、見たこともない不思議な世界の扉を開けて、その中に足を踏み入れて行って、そしてその異世界を冒険するという心躍る体験だった。その頃は気づいていなかったけれど、外国語を学ぶということは異文化を知ることと分かち難く結びついていた。

I was born and raised in Japan, 100% Japanese. Travelled abroad a lot and had homestay many times, but I have never studied abroad. When telling so, many people are very surprised at this fact. However, I was always in the environment close to foreign culture, and assuming that I nurtured a viewpoint seeing Japanese culture from a bit distant and objectively. And I’m very aware of the charm and eager to share it, and have a sense of mission. So intriguing that my childhood experience adoring foreign culture ripened and transformed into the project of sharing Japanese culture to the world when grown up.

私は日本生まれの日本育ちの所謂純ジャパで、海外旅行やホームステイは沢山したけれど、留学経験がないという話をすると、いつも非常に驚かれる。しかし、外国文化が身近にある環境に常にいたので、日本にいながらにして日本文化を少し遠くから客観的に見る視点が育まれて行ったのかもしれない。だから日本文化発信ということにより意識的で、ある種の使命感すら持つ様になったのかもしれない。海外の文化に興味津々だった幼少期が、成熟した大人になって日本文化発信へと結びついたのは、人生の妙味であるかもしれない。

Education is hope, it is indeed so. Learning enriches your inner mind and world, it is planting a seed in yourself like motoring a private electric generator. So in oder to survive through this world that hope is getting scarce, learning something enthusiastically and strengthen one’s skill and technique is a fortress of hope for both children and adults. I have conviction for that.

教育は希望だと、本当にそう思う。学ぶということは、自分で自分の心や世界を豊かにする、自家発電機の様に自分で出来る希望の種まきなのだ。だから、この希望が少なくなって来た世界を生き抜くために、何かを一生懸命に学んで、自分の中の技能や技術を高めてゆくことは、子供にとっても大人にとっても、一つの砦としてあるのだと本当にそう思う。
