Visited Andy Warhol Exhibition held in Kyoto. Warhol has been clinging in my sight somehow since I bought his art book in Greenwich Village, New York.

京都で開催中のアンディ・ウォーホール展へ行って来た。ウォーホールのことは、その画集をニューヨークのグリニッジビレッジで買って以来、何かと気になる存在だ。

People say he was a fraud or always acting. Warhol was a controversial figure who had various reputations. In the era of mass produces he was making enormous amount of money while declaring cans of soup image was art, or other parody works far from originality but edgy to be art. This time, I appreciated the silkscreen works and young time whimsical illustrations and movies of the Pop Artist. Also, I bought reference book of the exhibition and watched his documentary, “BBC Modern Masters 1 of 4 – ANDY WARHOL” while taking notes. I’m enjoying blissful time in the artful autumn.

詐欺師だったとか、人生全て演技だったとか、色んな評価があった大量消費時代の寵児ウォーホールだが、スープ缶を並べてアートと言い切り、オリジナルではないけれどピリリと機転の効いたパロディ作品を発表しながら、あり得ないほどのお金を稼いでいた。そのシルクスクリーンの作品群と、若い頃の軽妙洒脱なイラストや、残されている映像作品を鑑賞し、図録も買って読み見込み、BBC のドキュメンタリー “BBC Modern Masters 1 of 4 – ANDY WARHOL” もノートを取りながら観て、芸術の秋を心ゆくまで堪能している。

Kyoto and Warhol has deep connection. Warhol and his boy friend toured around Asia for the very first travel abroad, and the vivid impression of Japan kept casting shadows for the rest of his life. Pictures of geisha girls and gold foil illustrations and Katsushika Hokusai’s “The Great Wave of Kanagawa”, the works of his interpretation of Japanese culture are so lovely.

京都とウォーホールの仲は深い。初めての海外旅行でアジアをボーイフレンドと周り、その時の日本の印象が終生アンディに濃い影響を与え続けたと言われている。京都の芸者を描いた絵や、金箔を貼った絵や、葛飾北斎の「神奈川沖浪裏」を元にした絵など、日本文化の「翻案作品」が印象的だ。

Warhol revisited Japan numerous times and he appeared on Japan famous TV talk show “Tetsuko no Heya (Tetusko’s Room)”, his favorite restaurant was Japanese restaurant in New York, and he was influenced by Ikebana; the Art of Flower Arrangement.

ウォーホールはその後何度も日本を訪れ、「徹子の部屋」に出演したり、ニューヨークでは和食レストランが行きつけだったり、生花から影響を受けたりしていたそうだ。

I personally much prefer works of his illustrator period that are quirky and charming to parody works produced after attained worldwide success as a Pop Artist. The technique of “blotted line”, drawing black ink line and trace it on another paper to give slight nuance is touching. Feel as if it is crossing over with my childhood memories, soft and delicate and tender all together.

私は個人的には、アーティストとして世界的な名声を得て大成功する前の、イラストレーター時代の作品群の方が、風変わりで洒落ていて愛らしく、ずっと好きだ。黒いインクで書いた線を別の紙に写し取って線に滲みを出す「ぼかし線」の技法が、微妙で繊細な雰囲気を醸し出していて、心に残る印象を与える。自分の子供時代の、柔らかで微かで優しい記憶と重なりあってゆくものがある様な気がする。

And I was imagining if I actually decorate his work at home, just one piece, what will it be? I was wondering and walking around the venue. And thought this “Cat in Front of Church” is the one.

一枚だけ作品を我が家に飾るとしたらどの絵が良いかを考えて、会場を回っていた。そして、この「教会の前の猫」が一番好きだと思った。

He had a big success as an illustrator, but never satisfied with it. Made a rebranding of himself as a Pop Artist, the brilliant frontier of “self-branding”. Pushed himself high above to become the center of the attention from all over the world. It is said “The best work of Andy Warhol is Andy Warhol. ” Warhol made the persona of himself and became the director and producer of his brand.

彼は仕事においてイラストレーターとして成功を収めるだけでは飽き足らず、ポップアーティストとして自分自身に付加価値を付け、セルフブランディングをして、世界中からの注目を浴びる様に強力に押し上げて行った。「アンディ・ウォーホールの最高の作品は、アンディ・ウォーホールだ」とも言われる。ウォーホールは自らのペルソナ（仮面としての人格）を作り、自分自身を演出したのだ。

Warhol said “In the future, everyone will be famous in 15 minutes.”, as if he was predicting the arrival of the SNS generation. And he stamped cool on anything, like Coca Cola or cans of soup. He even said anyone can become celebrity in the world. And in this day and age, in the time of SNS, we are all self-branding more or less, have persona, and push your character and sense of value to the front. It is a must that you differentiate yourself from others.

「将来、人は誰でも15分で有名になれる」と語ったウォーホールは、SNS世代がもたらす未来の到来を予見していたかの様だ。また、大量消費時代のあらゆるもの、例えばコカコーラだとか、スープ缶だとかが「イケてる」ものになり得、世界中の誰もがセレブリティになり得るという予想をしたのだ。そして今現在、SNS時代に生きる私たちは皆、程度の差はあれセルフブランディングをし、ペルソナという仮面としての人格像を持ち、自分という存在の個性や価値観を全面に打ち出して、人と差別化をして行くことが半ば当然となっている。

Warhol dragged in all sorts of famous figures to his works. And it is said he was nuts for Sakamoto Ryuichi. He was mad in love with him, and felt very shy when actually met Sakamoto that he couldn’t exchange a word.

ウォーホールはあらゆる有名人を自身の作品に取り込んだ。そして坂本龍一のことが好きで堪らなかったと言われている。好き過ぎて恥ずかしくなるほどで、実際に会った時には、上手に言葉を交わせなかったそうだ。

Cans of Campbell’s soup image made with the silkscreen technique, or Brillo box for cleaning dishes, they are so ubiquitous everyday things. But if it is cut out from a different angle and showcased with a different presentation, you can’t help but find art in it. Is it nothing but “achievement” of Warhol?

シルクスクリーンの技法で作ったキャンベルスープを並べたり、食器洗いスポンジの箱を再現したり、なんてことはない筈のありふれたモノが改めて違った視点で切り取られると、そこに芸術を感じてしまう不思議があることを提示してみせた、ウォーホールの「功績」について考える。

What is art? What is originality? What is one and only in the world? What is expressing something? We can’t find the simple and clear answer for that. Even though, all of us have strong drive to reveal ourselves. We can’t live along without expressing something. And in the workings of our life, we pursue sophistication further and further. And in the ultimate form, we yield and create art of our own?

芸術とは何だろう。独創性とは何だろう。世界に一つとは何だろう。モノを表現するということは何だろう。明確な答えが見つからないものに対して、それでも表現せずにはいられない情動を持つ私たちが、生きる営みの中で洗練を求めた先に行き着くものが、やはり芸術というものなのだろうか。

Many of us desire to learn from all genre of culture and art in the world, and extract essence from them, and sublimate the basic quality in your own method, and sharpen up the skills. The true and at times sinful nature of ours that can’t be erased is inevitably tied with the spirit of art? The nature, all of us in this age equally possess?

世界中に存在するありとあらゆる文化や芸術に触れ、その中から何かを自分なりに抽出し、自分なりの表現方法へと昇華させて、己の技を磨いてゆく。この時代を生きる全ての人々が等しく持っている、消しても消えない業のようなものが、すなわち芸術というものと分かち難く結びついているのだろうか。
