I was free all day yesterday, and I was reading books in English and Japanese from morning till bedtime. I wanted to study unique expressions and writing styles, and I read ‘The Secret Life of Dreams’ like an encyclopedia by Clare Gibson, and reread Banana Yoshimoto’s ‘Transient/ Sanctuary’ first time in decades. ‘Dreams’ is good for learning wide range of vocabularies in order to polish up translation skills. Ms. Banana’s works are written in everyday colloquial language yet abyss of truth is hidden, and she reaches out the core of cores. I wanted to comprehend the magical mysticism, yet while I was reading, I was saturated in the Banana world. When I noticed, tears rolling down endlessly and runny nose was running nonstop.

昨日一日休みで、朝から寝る直前まで英語と日本語の本を読んでいた。独自表現と文体の勉強をしようと、Clare Gibson が書いた 百科事典の様な ‘The Secret Life of Dreams’ を読み、吉本ばななの『うたかた/ サンクチュアリ』を何十年かぶりに読み返していた。 ‘Dreams’ の方は語彙力の勉強になるし、翻訳技術を上げてゆく視点で読み、ばなな先生の方はカンタンな飾らない話し言葉の中に宿る凄み、本質、核への迫り方を学ぶつもりで読んでいた。読むうちに夢中になって、ばなな世界にハマり込んで行ったら感情移入甚だしくなり、ボロボロと涙がこぼれ、鼻水がじゅうじゅうと染み出す様に出てきた。

I felt content since I was able to study analysis of subconscious in dreams, and I was fulfilled by Ms. Banana’s quintessence, these days she is coming to be like a fortune teller a bit cultic, though.

夢に潜む人間の深層心理の分析や、近頃では占い師の様にカルト的にもなって来たばなな先生の本髄にもやられて、けれどとても佳き学びの時間だった。

Ms. Banana is so tender. The tenderness can be naive and loose, it is like loaning money to a friend and the friend became unfaithful then Ms. Banana was agonized severely. The tenderness is something that you can’t be cold hearted toward forebodings, if you don’t help out a person in front of you, the person might choose death. Ms. Banana chooses to help, the tenderness of hers is embracing stupidity and helplessness of human existence.

ばなな先生は優しい。それは友人にお金を貸しちゃって、後々その友人の誠実さが見えなくなって、七転八倒苦しみまくるような脇の甘さしかない優しさだったりするけれど、それは切実にこの人に今自分が手を差し伸べないと、この人は死を選んでしまうだろうという予感に対して冷徹になりきれない、人間の存在におけるどうしようもない情けなさを抱きとめる様な優しさだ。

I have an old friend who is similar with Ms. Banana’s inclination. When young my friend was quite wild and naughty, and one time she showed me a face of Mama gorilla. She has tenderness of naked soul. And the face of Mama gorilla turned to be my sweet memory. And that kind of tenderness of mother nature is sheerly exceptional. I think my friend is doing good job encouraging people’s worn out soul nonchalantly like serving a cup of hot cocoa.

昔からの友にばなな先生によく似た心持ちをした友人がいて、若い頃は特にハチャメチャだったけれど、ママゴリラの真似をして見せてくれるような、裸の心で生きている人のみが持つ優しさを持っている友がいる。私はその子のしてくれたママゴリラの顔を、今でも愛しき思い出として心に抱いていたりする。そういう地球のお母さんみたいな優しさを持った人は、ばなな先生みたいに、色んな人の心を疲れた時にちょっと憩うココアを飲むように、さりげなく励ましてくれる仕事ができるのだろう。

Speaking of Ms. Banana, I was once talked by a charming and bouncy old lady when taking Tokyo metropolis tram from JR Yamanote line Ohtsuka station to Nishigahara 4 chome. She said she is a big fan of Banana Yoshimoto, and she wrote a fan letter and surprisingly Ms. Banana wrote her back. The lady showed me the precious treasure.

ばなな先生と言えば、大学生の頃の通学路で、JR山手線の大塚駅から西ヶ原四丁目まで都電に乗った時に、隣に座った弾む様にチャーミングだったお婆さんに話しかけられたことがある。自分は吉本ばななの大ファンで、手紙を書いたら返事が来たと、その宝物を見せてくれたのだ。

Ms. Banana was polishing scripts and she wrote the letter with red thick marker. The round handwriting was so Kawaii, and her tone was so ordinary, as if being kind to people in ordinary situation, she was seeing eyes of a fan and saying thank you sharing her time, showing gratitude sincerely in crazy busy schedule. I believe it is truly awesome attitude.

ばなな先生は推敲中の朱入れということで、赤いフェルトペンで返事を書いていた。丸っこい文字が可愛くて、ファンの一人一人の熱い思いに対して、フツーの人がフツーに親切をするかの様なフツーさで、しかしちゃんと「あなた」の思いを有難く思いますという飾らなさで、目がぐりんぐりんに回るう様な忙しさの中で、フェンレターに返事を書かれていた。そういうのって、本当に凄いと思う。

Ms. Banana’s father is celebrated writer, Yoshimoto Takaai. And her mother was once spouse of Yoshimoto’s friend and Yoshimoto stole her. Ms. Banana is writing so. And I believe the tenderness and the viewpoint and the karma of Ms. Banana is springing form there.

ばなな先生のお父さんは高明な作家の吉本隆明だ。そして、お母さんは吉本隆明が友人の妻だった人を略奪したのだと、ばなな先生は書いている。きっとばなな先生の優しさと作家としての視点と業の源泉はここにあるんじゃないかと。

All among Ms. Banana’s literature I especially like early time works such as ‘Moonlight Shadow’ ‘Asleep’ ‘The Premonition’ and ‘Goodbye Tsugumi’. I think this real world is extremely tough and sour for individuals who never judge others like Ms. Banana who embraces gentle and delicate sensibility. Nevertheless, such tenderness that you never dump others is more beautiful than anything else, and it is gifted for few of chosen.

ばなな先生の作品では『ムーンライト・シャドウ』『白河夜船』『哀しい予感』『TSUGUMI』あたりの初期作品が特に好きだけれど、そういう誰のことも断罪しない様な柔らかく繊細な感受性を持ち続けたまま生きてゆくには、この世界は辛酸の極みではあるけれど、人のことを見限らない優しさって、実は何より美しくて、なかなか持っている人はいない種類の優しさなんだろうと私は思っている。
