Visited Candle Night Festival in a small town of sea breeze with my friend. It’s held only one night in a year, annual event of Tsuyazaki Fukutsu city, Fukuoka. At night of December near Christmas, strolling around the historical district of Tsuyazaki Sengen for 2 hours was so sweet and dreamy, as if we found a secretly hidden time pocket.
一年に一晩だけ開かれる『潮風吹く小さなまちの小さな灯り展』へ友人と二人で行ってきた。『みんなで灯す、あかりのまつり』は福岡県福津市津屋崎の恒例行事だ。クリスマスも近い十二月の夜、津屋崎千軒の歴史ある町を二時間ほどそぞろ歩く道中は、幻想的で甘やかで、ひょっこり隠れている時間ポケットを見つけたみたいなひとときだった。
At Sea Shell lodge, there are shells collected by locals going to the beach every day. And candles lit up the shells. I remembered Mishima’s novel of ‘The Sound of Waves’, the climax love scene of a young man and a woman.
『貝寄せ館』では、地元の方が毎日海に行って拾い集めてきた貝殻が並ぶ。そこに蝋燭を灯して貝殻が浮かび上がる。三島由紀夫の小説『潮騒』の若い男女の愛の高まりあう一場面を思い出したりして。
Shells picked up at the beach and pinecones at the beach pine forest were made into a Christmas tree.
地元の海で拾った貝殻と、その海の松林で拾ってきた松ぼっくりで作ったクリスマスツリー。
Visited ‘Ai no Ie’ famous historical architecture of the area.
歴史建築としても名高い『藍の家』へもお邪魔した。
Recalling a scene of Tanizaki’s ‘In Praise of Shadows’. The ratio of light and shadow 2:8 is creating Japanese romanticism.
こちらは谷崎潤一郎の『陰翳礼讃』の世界だ。光と影の二対八の割合が日本情緒を作っている。
Bamboo lantern in the garden is also evoking sentiment.
お庭に添えられた竹燈籠の佇まいも、よろしき面影。
Japanese old house cafe was popular with baked marshmallows.
古民家カフェは焼きマシュマロを買う方々で賑わっていた。
In front of a photo studio, locals’ hand craft works were sold. I’ll share a Christmas present that my friend bought me in the end.
写真館の前では地元の方々の作品が売られていた。友人が私にクリスマスプレゼントとして買ってくれたものは最後にご紹介する。
And here we arrived at the main venue park. There were exhibited hundreds of hand made candles, and we got hype. Kawaii, kawaii, kawaii world. And each work is a piece of art produced with craftsmanship. The candle creator’s works were stunning with local junior high school students works. And there were elementary school students works, Tsuyazaki bamboo craft club’s works, and Tsuyazaki pottery club’s works also. It was selling like a hotcake.
そしてメイン会場になっている宮の元公園へ。何百もの手作りキャンドルの饗宴に歓声を上げる。可愛い、可愛い、可愛い世界だ。そしてその一つ一つが一生懸命の手仕事で出来ている芸術作品なのだ。キャンドル作家が地元の中学生と一緒に作った作品が一同に並ぶ。そして小学生の作品もあり、津屋崎竹細工同好会の作品や、津屋崎陶芸同好会の作品も売られ大盛況だった。
In a small town of sea breeze, the light festival is for only one night in winter. However, the locals spent for a year to prepare. The gentle and warm spirit was transforming into dazzling light and it dreamingly lit up the town.
潮風吹く小さなまちの、たった一晩だけの冬の夜の灯りのまつり。けれどこのお祭りのために一年かけて準備をされている方々。その優しくて温かい思いが綺麗な灯りになって、町中に夢見心地のあかりを灯していた。
