＜Online interview with Mr. NISHIYORI Yuki/ 西依勇輝氏とのオンラインインタビュー＞

Attended Tokyo University of Foreign Studies alumni reunion of Fukuoka district in November. It was such a gregarious party felt so proud of TUFS, where we all devoted ourselves for foreign studies and international exchange in youth. Wining and dining in Brazilian restaurant, the get-together was consisted of many generations from current student to 82-year-old great senior. It was wonderfully arranged by the board members, and the lovable language geeks were all so joyful.

11月に行われた、東京外国語大学の卒業生からなる外語会の福岡支部総会に出席した。ブラジル料理を囲みながら、下は在学生から上は82歳の大先輩まで、東京外大という語学の殿堂である学舎で青春を語学と国際交流に捧げた、愛すべき語学マニア達の集いは、事務局の方達の準備、段取り、司会進行その全てが心尽しの素晴らしいもので、外大卒であることが誇らしいと心から思えた時間だった。

And I encountered with my junior of Malaysian major, 23 years younger Mr. NISHIYORI Yuki. Nishiyori kun is working for Saga prefectural office, and he said he was involved in Malaysia drama series filmed in Saga titled ‘From Saga With Love’. I got interested and checked the drama on YouTube, and watched 5 episodes of Season 1. Watching in Malaysian with Malaysian subtitles, some parts were unable to figure out, but I felt so nostalgic for the scent of Malaysia that I immersed in my youthful time. Furthermore, I was glad that I could enjoy the drama in my 3rd language.

そんな中で23学年下のマレーシア語科の後輩、西依勇輝くんに出会う。西依くんは佐賀県庁勤務で、佐賀発のマレーシアドラマ ‘From Saga With Love’ の制作に関わった話をされていた。私はこの話に興味を持って、You Tube に公開されているシーズン1 の第五話まで視聴してみた。マレーシア語のドラマをマレーシア語字幕で見て、途中わからない所もありつつの、我が青春時代のマレーシアの香りが懐かしい。そして何より、自分にとっての第三言語でドラマが楽しめるということが嬉しい。

The drama is about an influencer Karma who was hired as an interpreter pretending as if capable despite she knew only greetings in Japanese. Karma came to Saga with an actress Bianca, and they met a Malaysian potter trainee in Arita pottery village. Karma made innumerable mistakes but plowed through her way with guts. It will be encouragement for youngsters, I guess. In the drama, many Saga tourist sites were introduced. Ureshino Hot Spring foot bath and public bath are social spots for the locals and tourists.

ドラマの内容は、インフルエンサーのカルマが挨拶しか知らないのに、日本語が話せると言って愛嬌で乗り切って通訳に採用され、女優のビアンカと一緒に佐賀に乗り込み、そして有田焼の窯元でマレーシア人の陶芸家見習いと出会い、沢山失敗しながら逞しく道を切り開くというもの。これは多くの若者への応援歌として励ましとなってゆくのだろう。ドラマでは佐賀の名所が多く紹介される。嬉野温泉の足湯やシーボルトの湯は、いつも地元民や観光客で賑わっている町の社交場だ。

And I felt I must record this as an article, then I asked for online interview to Nishiyori kun. And also I’d like to introduce him here. It is very first time to write portrait of a guy in his 20s with real voice in this blog.

そして、これは記事として残しておかなくてはと思い、西依くんにオンラインインタビューを申し込んだ。ここでは西依くんの人物紹介もしたい。二十代男性の生の声は、このブログでは記念すべき初の登場となる。

According to Nishiyori kun, this drama is sponsored by Air Asia, and it is aiming to promote tourists for traveling abroad. The main viewers are women, so it is highly favored love comedy. It is filmed in cynical realism that Malaysians are liar, temperamental, ego centric, and irresponsible. On the contrary Japanese are highly beautified as calm, peaceful, gentle, and noble. The outer image of Japan is ‘Zen’ and ‘Kawaii’, thesis of Master’s degree of mine that I submitted to Kyoto University of the Arts when establishing Japanography is corresponding to this tendency.

西依くんによるとこのドラマはエアアジアがスポンサーで、海外渡航の観光客を増やす狙いもあるとのこと。視聴者は女性が多いので鉄板のラブコメ路線であることも教わった。マレーシア人は嘘つきでムラっ気があり、その場凌ぎでやり過ごす自己中心的な人物造形でリアルに辛口に描かれるのに対して、日本人は穏やかで平和的で優しく高尚に、かなり美化されて対比的に描かれている。やはり日本の対外的なイメージは「禅」と「可愛い」に集約されるものであると、ジャパノグラフィー®️確立の際、京都芸術大学大学院に提出した修士論文の内容に呼応しているものがある。

In the drama, actress Bianca speaks in fluent American English here and there. In Malaysia, ones who speak American accented English are adored and it is the same in Japan. Nishiyori kun worked as Japanese-Malaysian interpreter when the drama staffs and performers paid a courtesy visit to the governor of Saga. He was also in shooting spot and his back was in the drama. Also, he became friends with the actors and actresses and exchanged Instagram. Malaysian, Bahasa Melayu has its own uniqueness. Saying jokes and such in BM and people get so close. This is something that you can never sense via English.

ドラマでは、女優のビアンカが流暢なアメリカンイングリッシュを何度も挟み込む。マレーシアでは綺麗な発音をした英語を話す人が憧れの対象になるが、これは日本でも同様の話。西依くんは、ドラマ制作者や出演者達が佐賀県知事に表敬訪問をする際のマレーシア語通訳も担当して、また撮影に同行して背中がドラマに映り込んだそうだ。また俳優陣とも仲良くなってインスタを交換したりもしたそうだ。マレーシア語にはその独特の間合いがあって、マレーシア語で冗談を言ったりして一気に距離が近くなったりする。これは英語を介してでは得られない感覚なのだ。

Nishiyori kun is remarkable, yet his path to reach here was not easy. When job hunting, he insisted too much that he wanted to do something with Malaysia and he failed 200 job interviews. And I like this youngster with guts so very much! I also challenged more than 100 times and failed over 100 times when creating Japanography. Such gritty spirit evokes sympathy. You can never open up a huge door if not having trial and error hundreds of times.

しかし西依くんは非常に優秀ながら順風満帆に来たわけではなく、就活ではマレーシアに関わる仕事がしたいと強く希望しすぎて、200社落ちる経験をしたそうだ。こういう気骨のある青年さんは大好きだ。私自身、ジャパノグラフィー®️を作る際に100回以上挑戦して100回以上落ちた経験があり、そういうのって一番共感を呼ぶんだと盛り上がった。何度も挑戦しなきゃ大きな扉はこじ開けられないのだ。

Currently, Nishiyori kun is like a beat reporter of the Saga governor, and the content sounds intriguing. And he shared his vision for the future. One of the plans he has is to link Southeast Asia and Saga directly. In the future he wants to invite direct flights from Southeast Asia to Saga, and wants to make an air route bringing in semiconductors to Tosu that is logistics center of Kyushu, as well as tourists.

現在の西依くんは佐賀県知事の番記者のようなことをしていて、その内容はかなり面白そうだ。そして将来のビジョンも聞かせてもらった。その一つに東南アジアと佐賀を直接結ぶ仕事がしたいというものがあるそうだ。将来的に東南アジアと佐賀を結ぶ直行便の路線を誘致をして、観光客だけでなく、半導体を九州の物流センターである鳥栖に運ぶ航路を作ったりしたいという構想を話してくれた。

＜After party with youngsters, it was fun!/ 若者達に混じっての二次会、楽しかったです！＞

On the day of the reunion, walking way to after party to Russian Bar, I shared my memories of Malaysian department in TUFS with Nishiyori kun. Saying if I had a son, he would be around your age. And I mentioned about Prof. Onozawa who contributed to found Malaysian department in TUFS, and I talked about a dictionary that Onozawa sensei wrote. And I heard that now the students use English-Bahasa Meleyu dictionary mainly. In our age, there was no good English version dictionary and we had to go to Singapore or Kuala Lumpur to purchase one. He listened to me intently.

外語会当日、若者に混じって二次会のロシアンバーに行く道すがら、マレーシア語科の思い出話をした。私に息子がいたら君ぐらいの歳なんだよね〜、なんて言いながら。そして東京外大のマレーシア語科創設に御尽力された小野沢純先生の話題になり、小野沢先生が作られた辞書『マレーシア語常用6000語』の話をしたら、今はもう辞書は英語マレーシア語対訳辞書を主に使っているとのこと。私たちの時代は英語版の辞書はいいものがなくて、シンガポールかクアラルンプールまで行って現地で買ってこなくちゃいけなかったんだよ、と話すと西依くんは興味深そうに聞いてくれていた。

There is a landscape that you can see only after having challenges. Endeavor and persevere then try out many times, things don’t go smoothly and feel grudging and vexing. Yet there is power that you can use the feeling as a spring board. Here I say, “Good luck on youngsters! Good luck on TUFS students, and good luck on entrance examinees studying vigorously to pass TUFS!”

大きな挑戦しないと見えてこない景色がある。何度も何度も挑戦して、なかなか上手くいかなくて、悔しくて悔しくて、けれどその思いをバネにすることによってのみグンと伸びて行ける力がある。頑張れ、若者！頑張れ、外大生！そして今、東京外大を目標にして猛勉強している受験生も頑張れ！
