Hi there! I want to share architectures of Fukuoka area. I often think about what to write for on this blog. And the other day, I went to Tenjin, Fukuoka and took pictures of a historical red brick building. It was built in 1909 and the architecture  stands there for more than 100 years.

みなさん、こんにちは。このブログでは建築案内もしようと考え、福岡近郊にはどんな歴史的な建築物があるだろうかと考えていました。先日、幼少の頃から博多天神方面に出かけて行って目にする度に素敵だなと思っていた、中洲にほど近い福岡市赤煉瓦文化館の前を通る機会がありました。レトロでモダンで、歴史の風雪に堪えた佇まいは本当に美しいものがあります。

I googled the red brick building and found out that it was designed by an architect Kingo Tatsuno and Yasushi Kataoka who also made Tokyo Station and Bank of Japan head office. The style is 19th century British style. It was originally established as  Kyushu branch of Nihon Seimei Inc. (Insurance Company)  in 1909 and in 1963 the building was designated as a national important cultural property. At that timing the building was transferred to Fukuoka city. Now, this building is used as Fukuoka city literature assembly hall.

調べてみると、この赤煉瓦文化館は東京駅や日本銀行本店などを設計した建築家辰野金吾と片岡安が手がけた辰野片岡建築事務所の設計であり、日本生命株式会社九州支店として明治42年に竣工されています。19世紀の英国様式であり、1963年に国の重要文化財に指定されたのを機に福岡市に譲渡され、現在は福岡市文学館を開設して文学に関する様々な活動が行われています。

Whenever I saw this place, I automatically remembered Tokyo Station. No wonder  it was designed by the same person. I thought I need to learn more about architectures. I bought this magazine BRUTUS, which covers Japanese famous architects and their works. It’s a great textbook for somebody who wants to have good knowledge of architecture related issues. I found Kingo Tattsuno on the magazine also.

この赤煉瓦文化館を見ると、自動的にいつも東京駅のことを思い出していたのですが、やはり同じ建築家の作品だったのですね。日本の建築を紹介する為に建築の勉強もしておかなくては、と買ったBRUTUSに辰野金吾のことが紹介されていました。
