Yoshinogari Ancient Remains

Long long time ago, about 2000 years ago it was Yayoi Age in Japan. The lifestyle in those days was considered to be similar to the movie, “Princess Mononoke”. This time, I visited Yoshinogari Ancient Remains in Saga prefecture in Kyushu, the ruins reminded me that I was having a time travel to the past.

This place is considered and debated to be an ancient country named “Yamataikoku”. In Chinese History Book “Sangokushi (Records of the Three Kingdoms), Gishi-Wajinden”, it is written that a queen called Himiko was enthroned. The village is surrounded with moats both inside and out side, the premises is about 50 hectares.

In order to protect the village from attacking of enemies, there are several watch house towers. I climbed up one of them and overlooking from there, I could see the moats.

The craftsmanships of weaving was developed, and threads were produced from crops and plants, and clothes were created.

In those days the society was polygamy and people were living in these pit-dwelling houses.

The top picture is a raised-floor house and it is a king’s palace. It is the central institution of politics of Yoshinogari. It is considered that critical issues such as the dates of rice planting and harvesting were decided here, and prayers for wars and huntings were conducted.

Godly ritual. The queen Himiko, considered to be a shaman was receiving divine messages from God.

This is ancient burial remains. It is restored just as it was excavated.

Bodies of leaders were buried, separated from family cooperate graves and they were buried with luxurious possessions. The meaning of possessions of burial is not just to prove the rank of the persons but it was supposed to be considered that with those splendid possessions they could continue to keep the high status in the afterlife and they would lead the society eternally.

At Yoshinogari Ancient Remains, there were unearthed various clay vessels, stone implements, bronze wares, ironwares, wooden wares. Also accessories such as comma-shaped beads and tube shaped beads, copper swards, copper mirrors, textiles, and cloth products were excavated. And other things considered to be ritual ornaments were found out. There is no conclusion that this place is the ancient country “Yamataikoku” or not among historians yet.

However, putting aside the debate and I was walking around the remains that restored the ancient lifestyle, I came to conceive the simple truth that people live and die. I belong to somewhere and I work diligently for the community and pass away when my turn has come. And the life of the community continues ceaselessly. I was so relieved and comforted that I sensed I’m protected by hands of something big.

At this Yoshinogari Ancient Remains, people had a primitive lifestyle. But at the same time you can encounter the accumulations of wisdom and intelligence. Do your best and contribute to the society and when time has come, you go to heaven. I find it as something truly beautiful. It is the simplest thing but somehow so powerful. I was able to read the persuasive story here and I was so pleased to learn and understand the eternal lesson.

That’s all for today. Do your best and have wonderful blessings!
