Hi there! How are you doing? Today, I want to write about Tokyo station. Tokyo station is the central station of all the railway systems in Japan. The station architecture is historical and the building is piled up with red bricks one by one. When I first went to Tokyo at the age of 18 to enter an university in Tokyo, I was so touched by the beauty of the station. I can still picture it clearly. Tokyo station was designed by Kingo Tatsuno who planned many national and governmental architecture in Japan . The style, that white stones make lines in the red bricks is called “Tatsuno style”.

みなさん、こんにちは。今日は全国各地に伸びる日本の鉄道の心臓部とも言える、東京駅について書きたいと思います。東京駅は歴史の重みを感じさせる、赤煉瓦を一つずつ積み上げた重厚な造りです。十八才の時に大学入学のために初めて上京し、その美しさに感動したことを今も鮮明に覚えています。国家的建築を数多く手掛けた辰野金吾の設計で、赤煉瓦に白石が帯状に走る外観は「辰野式」と呼ばれているそうです。

駅舎の中もご紹介します。視線を上に向けてゆくと、

The ceiling is like this. Tatsuno designed architecture based on the trends in 19th century English style. I personally prefer night time Tokyo station rather than that of the daytime. The lighting in the darkness is beautiful.

天井はこうなっています。辰野金吾は19世紀のイギリスの流行を基軸に置いた設計をしいるそうです。私は個人的には昼間の東京駅よりも、夜にライトアップされる表情の方が素敵だと思っています。

Tokyo station (Tokyo station building of Marunouchi ) was completed in 1914, but it took more than 20 years since it was first planned. I can tell it takes so much time, energy, and passion to carry out the massive and valuable project. Things that were well prepared and meticulously planned can be more attractive and alluring as it ages. The station, that stands in the center of Japan is more than 100 years old and it still functions so well repeating metabolism and such. We Japanese people should be proud of the fact.

東京駅（東京駅丸の内駅舎）は1914年の竣工ですが、計画から二十年がかりで完成したそうです。大きな仕事を成し遂げるためには、多大な時間とエネルギーと情熱が必要になってくるのだと納得します。よく準備されて練り上げられたものは、年輪を重ねるにつれて益々価値が深まりゆくのだと。築百年以上にもなる駅が今も日本の中心に堂々と立っていて、新陳代謝を繰り返しながらも日々機能していることを思うと、日本も捨てたものではありません。

And also, Tokyo station is the central station of Shinkansen, aka bullet train. World famous Shinkansen started the history at the same timing of the previous Tokyo Olympics in 1964. In those days, all the Japanese people became one and worked so hard for the same goal. My late father who used to work for the national railway system told me the story. In two years, 2020 we throw the next Tokyo Olympics. At the moment, the whole nation is preparing for the special festivity, slowly but steadily.

また、東京駅は全国に伸びる新幹線の発着駅でもあります。世界に冠たる日本の新幹線は、先の1964年東京オリンピックに合わせて整備されたとの話を、元国鉄マンだった父が話してくれた在りし日の思い出が胸をよぎります。二年後の2020年には次の東京オリンピックが控えています。今は日本中がその祭典のための準備を着々と進めて行っている最中です。
