Hello. When you are visiting Tokyo, and if you want to experience a really nice day trip soaking into the authentic Japanese atmosphere, I strongly recommend you to go and explore Kamakura, the Ancient Capital. There are various ways to access Kamarura from Tokyo, but it just takes an hour to an hour and a half or so.

こんにちは。東京を訪れた際に、古式ゆかしき日本の魅力に浸りたいと思われるのであれば、ひとつ鎌倉探訪をされてはいかがでしょうか。古都鎌倉へ東京から行くには幾つもの方法がありますが、だいたい一時間から一時間半で着きます。

I enjoyed the day trip with my friend from university. We visited Houkokuji, a famous bamboo temple that was originally built in 1347. A monk opened this temple and he practiced Buddhistic austerities while took delight in poem composition for the spare time.

今回、鎌倉日帰り旅を大学時代の友人と楽しんできました。1347年に開かれた、竹寺として有名な報国寺をまずは訪れました。とある僧侶がこの寺の開祖であり、修行のかたわら詩作に勤しんだという風流なお寺です。

And there are beautiful bamboos and you can sip authentic green tea at a tea shop.

美しき竹山を眺めつつ、お抹茶を茶房にて頂くひと時は乙なものです。

Feeling the breeze on your cheeks and listening to the birds chirping, you can sense that you are in a different world. The tranquility was one of a kind. It was literally like a time travel.

そよ風を頰に感じつつ小鳥のさえずりに耳を澄ませていると、異世界に迷い込んだかのような不思議な感覚を覚えます。その静けさは得難いものであり、まるでいにしえの昔に遡ったかのよう。

The bell tower represents Wabi Sabi itself.

鐘楼にも侘び寂びを感じます。

For lunch, we had this raw fish with rice on the bottom side, and miso soup with broth of clams was amazing!

お昼ご飯にはこの海鮮丼を頂きました。貝のお出汁でとったお味噌汁も逸品です。

Shops in Kamakura are so very Japan indeed and it evokes some kind of nostalgia even for people who are not familiar with Japanese culture, I assume.

鎌倉にあるお店はどこもかしこも日本の美を体現しており、日本文化に馴染みの薄い外国の方々にも何かしらの懐かしさを抱かせるのではないか、そう思いました。

Of course, we visited the national treasure, Kamakura Big Buddha for sure. It was completed building the statue in 1252 taking about a decade. In Asian countries that are influenced by Buddhism culture, there are many Big Buddha statues all across the regions. I’ve seen a Sleeping Buddha in Malaysia and Golden Buddha in Thailand as well. There were many foreign tourists in Kamakura also.

勿論、国宝である鎌倉の大仏様にも行って参りました。この大仏様はおよそ十年の歳月をかけて1252年に完成したとのこと。仏教文化の影響を強く受けているアジア諸国には、大仏像が各地に多く点在しています。私はマレーシアで涅槃像を見たことがあり、またタイでは黄金の寺の仏像を訪問したことがあります。鎌倉にも多くの外国人観光客が訪れています。

If you want to pray for Buddha or a shrine in Japan, to purify your both hands before prayer is an important ritual.

大仏や神社をお参りするときは、事前にお手水で両の手を清めることが大切な儀式となります。

The reason why Kamakura is called as the Ancient Capital is that Kamakura was a place where the shogunate government of Japan was established in 1192. The government continued for about 150 years. In junior high school all the students memorize the year of 1192 as “iikuni-tukuro-kamakura-bakufu”, as a word play. (1192 can be read as IIKUNI in Japanese) It means “Let’s make a good country, Kamakura shogunate government.”

鎌倉が古都と呼び習わされているのには理由があります。鎌倉は1192年に鎌倉幕府が制定された日本の都だったのです。鎌倉幕府はその後、約150年続きました。日本の中学校では生徒が全員「いい国作ろう鎌倉幕府」という言葉で持って1192年の年号を記憶します。この語呂合わせも日本的で良いと思います。

Every time I have a chance to go to Tokyo, it became a mission for me to pay a visit to famous spots that can be interesting and intriguing for people all around the world. Kamakura is a perfect getaway from the busiest metropolis of Tokyo and you can appreciate the historical beauty of Japan within a day.
