Hello, everyone. I had a lecture at University of Iceland Japan major class regarding Japanese English that I surveyed for 4 and a half years as a university researcher. First, I taught them that Japanese English is a controversial language and I’m personally opposed to the phenomenon of the floods of Japanese English. I try my best not to use Japanese English on my daily conversations as much as I can, and I strongly desire to preserve our beautiful Japanese. However, I can’t go against the vigorous trend. It seems almost non-sense if I only persist the position all by myself.

みなさん、こんにちは。アイスランド国立大学の日本語学科の授業で、四年半調査をして来た和製英語についての講義をしました。和製英語は賛否両論のある言葉であること、私は個人的には和製英語の氾濫には異を唱えており、普段話す言葉の中には努めて和製英語を使わないようにしていること、美しい日本語を守りたいと思っているが大きな流れには逆らえないことを話しつつ、授業を進めて行きました。

I lectured that Japanese is consisted of mainly 3 different languages. Traditional Japanese that is called Yamato Kotoba, and China Korea originated Kango, and foreign originated (mainly English) Gairaigo. Japanese English is in this Gairaigo category. I taught them that an expression of “wash one’s face” can be described in 3 different ways in Japanese. I taught them that it causes misunderstanding when a Japanese speaks English and a foreigner speaks Japanese. I introduced some Japanese English words and asked the students to make sample sentences.

日本語は大きく分けて、日本古来の言葉である大和言葉と、中国朝鮮から入って来た漢語と、主に英語由来の外来語の三つの言語が混じって成立している言葉であること、和製英語は外来語の変種の一つであることを説明し、wash one’s faceという表現でも「顔を洗う」「洗顔」「フェイスウォッシュ」の三つの表現があることを話して、日本人が英語を使う時と外国人が日本語を使う時にこの和製英語の存在は混乱を引き起こすものであると伝え、学生達に和製英語をいくつか紹介して例文を作って貰いました。

Japanese English can be a target of criticism since it is giving negative influence toward authentic Japanese, and it is also a new trend. However, the existence of Japanese English was unheard for the students, and the whole class showed so much interest and we had such fruitful time together. I made the students guess the meaning of Address Cho (address book). A student made a sentence “I write down an address of my friend on the Address Cho (address book)” . I was surprised how good it was. I said “I give you an A!” And the student seemed so glad. And I asked the meaning of “All Suru”. One said “Does that mean to do everything? ” I replied it means to stay up all night. The student said “Is that really so?” and she made a sentence. “I stayed up all night to study for the mid exam.”

和製英語は日本語を乱すものとして非難の対象になりうる言葉であり、また新しく台頭して来た言葉でもあります。しかし、学生達には未知の存在であったことも手伝って、授業は大変盛り上がりました。アドレス帳、の意味を学生に推測させて、ある学生は「友達の住所をアドレス帳に書きます。」という立派な文章を作りました。驚いて私はあなたにAをあげます！と言うと、その学生はとても嬉しそうでした。他にもオールする、の意味は「全てするという意味ですか？」と推測する学生に、「一晩中起きているという意味ですよ」、と伝えると、「え！本当ですか」と言われました。「中間試験のためにオールする」という例文を一人の学生が作りました。

After the lecture I asked for questionnaires. Various opinions were written there, one wrote that Icelandic is getting bad influence because of English, one wrote that Japanese should be conserved as beautiful Japanese, one wrote Japanese English class was so interesting and s/he hopes to learn more, one wrote studying Japanese is a big challenge but because of that it’s worth working hard, one wrote that katakana words are the most difficult when studying Japanese, one wrote that s/he didn’t know the existence of Japanese English so it was very interesting.

講義後のアンケートでは、アイスランド語も英語の流入により乱れて来ているという意見や、日本語は美しい日本語のまま守って行って欲しいという意見や、和製英語の授業はとても面白くもっと学んでゆきたいという意見や、日本語の勉強はとても難しいけれどだからこそやり甲斐があるという意見や、カタカナ語が日本語を学ぶ際に一番苦労するという意見や、今まで和製英語の存在を知らなかったからとても面白かったという意見などなど、学生たちの様々な見解が活発に書かれていました。

During the class I also mentioned that the floods of English is effecting on the language system of Malaysian that I majored in university and Korean that I’m learning as a hobby. Iceland takes a policy to conserve their authentic native language, Icelandic. And at university of Iceland almost all the lectures are done in Icelandic. However, I heard it is easy for some students to write reports in English. I actually noticed when walking in the campus of the university, many students were speaking one another in English, not Icelandic.

言葉は生き物であり、英語の流入により言語形態が変わって来ているのは日本語だけではなく、私が学生時代に専攻したマレーシア語にしても、趣味で学んでいる韓国語にしても同様であることも話しました。アイスランドはアイスランド語という独自の言語を大切に守ってゆこうとする政策を取っています。そして、アイスランド大学では主にアイスランド語で授業が行われています。しかし、学生によってはレポートは英語で書いた方が楽だという学生もいるそうです。事実、大学の構内を歩いているとアイスランド語だけではなく、多くの学生が互いに英語で話しをしていました。

I noticed another thing. In Europe, British English is more dominant than American English. But in Iceland younger generations speak English with American accent. It is important to have good command of English in both Iceland and Japan, and it is preferable to educate people so. Even though, I believe it is more important to conserve our own native language, our mother tongue. It is crucial to preserve our own identity. In the class of Japanese English, it seems we shared a common dilemma that both Japan and Iceland are facing.

不思議なことに、ヨーロッパではイギリス英語の方がよく話されているのですが、アイスランドでは若い世代ほどアメリカ英語のアクセントで英語を話していました。アイスランドでも日本でも英語が話せることは大切であるし、英語を話すことは教育的に大いに推奨されるべきことです。しかし、それと同時に自国独自の言語も英語以上に大切に守って行きたいし、そのことに懸命に取り組むべきだと信じます。和製英語の授業は、日本とアイスランドが抱える共通のジレンマを垣間見たような一コマでもありました。
