Fukuoka, Fruits Kingdom

Hello. Do you know the fact that Japanese fruits are utterly delicious since they are studied and surveyed meticulously and ceaseless kaizen is carried out, and the fruits are produced delicately taking hundreds of procedures? Both planted outside and inside of green house fruit is like a piece of art work. Japanese is famous for its diligent craftsmanship, and fruit-growing is no exception. This time, I visited a region famous for various orchards in Fukuoka prefecture Asakura city and neighboring Kurume city Tanushimaru.

こんにちは。日本の果物は手間暇かけて熱心に研究改良を重ねられ、屋外や温室でよく手入れされて何百もの工程を経て作られるので、芸術品のような味がすることを知っていますか?日本のお家芸である「モノ作り精神」は、果樹栽培においても遺憾無く発揮されています。今回、福岡県でも特に果樹栽培が盛んな地、朝倉市とその近隣の久留米市田主丸の果樹園が多く集まる地域を訪れました。

This apple pie was served at a cafe in Asakura city, named “Ringo to budou no ki (trees of apples and grapes)”. The sweetness was just perfect and you can sense that it was baked with much affection. And the plate is crafted with a shape of an apple, so adorable.

こちらは朝倉市の「林檎と葡萄の樹」でいただいたアップルパイ。お味の方は程よい甘さで、丁寧に真心込めて作られているのが分かります。器も林檎をかたどった特別製のもので、それはそれは愛らしい。

This cafe was remodeled an old Japanese housing. Old, authentic, and genuinely elegant Japanese antiques welcomed us. The time went by so richly and slowly.

このカフェは古民家を改造したとても趣のあるところで、古き良き美しき日本の骨董品が並べられ、豊かな時間がゆっくりと流れています。

After spending some cozy time at the cafe, we went to Kyohou winery in Tanushimaru. They produce wine using the local fruits. The winery is located in a lovely forest. They produce and sell various kinds of wine here, including several kinds of grapes and muscats, kiwi fruits, blueberries, amanatu citruses, persimmons, mandarins, and plums&peaches.

素敵なカフェで一服した後は、近隣の田主丸の「巨峰ワイナリー」へ。地元の果物を使いワインを作っている、森の中腹にあるワイナリーへ足を伸ばしました。こちらでは、葡萄(巨峰やマスカットなど数種類)、キウイフルーツ、ブルーベリー、甘夏、柿、マンダリン、プラム&ピーチのワインを醸造販売しています。

When we visited, there were Korean tourists coming by a sightseeing bus. If you don’t have a car, it is inconvenient to go visit this area. Therefore, it might be a good idea to participate in a package trip.

私たちが行ったときには、観光バスで韓国人の団体客が訪れていました。車で行ける人でないならば、交通の便が悪いので、パック旅行で訪れるのも一案かもしれません。

I went under the basement wine storeroom. It was cool and the humidity was kept moderately and many bottles of wine were sleeping silently.

ワイナリーの地下貯蔵庫へも降りて行ってみました。ひんやりとして、湿度が一定に保たれ、ワインが寝かされています。

There are vine yards in the premises also. The trees are withered as it was winter, but it is so exciting to go visit Tanushimaru to “hunt” fully grown grapes in autumn.

葡萄の木々もワイナリーの敷地内にあります。冬だったので枯れ木となっていますが、秋にはたわわに実をつけた葡萄を目当てに田主丸へ葡萄狩りに来るのも一興です。

In Japan we have a leisure activity called “fruits hunting” by visiting an orchard to pick up and eat fruit at the fruit garden. It is very popular and in spring, Fukuoka prefecture that is famous for AMAOU strawberry welcomes its peak season.

日本では果物狩りと言って、果樹園に実っている果物を狩りとったりその場で食べたりする行楽があり、人気があります。春になると福岡の地では名品「あまおう」に代表されるイチゴ狩りが盛んになります。

Fruits in Japan in general are very sugary and each piece tastes like a jewelry. Utmost efforts, perseverance, and creativity are represented. Japanese craftsmanship that aims ultimate goal to better up as much as you can is so rigorous. I’m very proud of the Japanese spirit.

日本の果物は全般的にとても糖度が高く、一つ一つが宝石みたいに美味しいという、あらん限りの創意工夫が体現されています。一つの芸を極めてゆくという日本の職人魂を私はとても誇りに思っています。
