Hello everyone. At University of Iceland, I had a manga lecture also. This time I featured Osamu Tezuka, the legend of manga that Japan is proud of. There were 2 students who knew Tezuka in the class. All the students in the university are studying Japanese with so much passion and I was so thankful for that.

アイスランド国立大学では、マンガに関する講義も行いました。今回取り上げたのは日本が誇る伝説の漫画家、手塚治虫先生です。手塚先生のことを知っている学生も二人いました。全ての学生は日本のことを本当に熱心に学んでいて、とても有り難い気持ちでいっぱいになります。

Tezuka was not only a manga artist, but also a medical doctor. I lectured the huge influence that he gave to the Japanese manga world by sharing his master piece, “Black Jack”. In Japan most of public libraries don’t stock manga works in general, however Dr. Tezuka is exceptional. You can find his works almost at any public library here. It is an evidence that Dr. Tezuka is a manga artist that the country of Japan treasures. By showing Power Point I continued the lecture.

手塚先生は、漫画家であると同時に医者でもあること、手塚先生が日本の漫画界に及ぼした多大なる影響について、名作「ブラックジャック」を紐解きながら話して行きました。日本では殆どの公立図書館には漫画は置いてないけれど、唯一手塚先生は例外であり、手塚先生は日本国家が誇る漫画家であることをパワーポイントの画像を見せながら講義しました。

Hikaru Utada, the diva of Japan says that “Black Jack” is her all time favorite since small. Black Jack has graduated from medical department of a university but he is not a qualified doctor. There hides a deep secret behind.

「ブラックジャック」は日本の歌姫、宇多田ヒカルも子供の頃からの愛読書だと話しています。ブラックジャックは正規の教育を受けて医学部を卒業している医師ですが、医師免許は取得していません。そこには深い訳が隠されています。

Black Jack has been fighting against prejudice and injustice ever since he was a little boy. He is not a super hero who radiates like a sunshine. Rather than that, he is like a moon light that reflects upon a dark lonesome night. He lived along a tough life never depending on others since little. So he scolds off a patient who is dependent on others wishing to be spoiled. However, for someone who struggles to survive accepting all the the hardships and difficulties, he supports as much as he can without letting know the person.

ブラックジャックは幼少の頃から多くの差別や偏見と戦って来ました。ブラックジャックは太陽のように明るく輝くヒーローではなく、むしろ月光のような、暗い夜に闇を照らし出すようなヒーローです。幼い頃から誰にも依存せずに己に厳しく生きて来た。だから甘い考えでべったりと人に頼り切ろうとする人には「甘ったれるんじゃない！」と一喝します。けれど自身の苦難を受け入れて生き抜くのだと必死にもがく人には、その本人には気付かれないようにしつつも最大限の支援を惜しみません。

Dr. Tezuka experienced the World War Ⅱ when in junior high school. The tragic memories vastly echoed on his works. Each one of human beings has sinful nature. He confronted the truth. And on the contrary, we also have sublime love and beautiful soul. There are conflicts and contradictions. But all because of that we can’t help but love one another. He kept on creating human dramas that each one of us live along.

手塚先生は第二次世界大戦を中学生の時に経験しました。その悲惨な戦争の記憶は、彼の作品に大きな影響を及ぼしています。いかなる人間も等しく持っている罪なる性質を見つめ、またその対極になる人間の崇高なる愛や魂の美しさなど、相矛盾するがゆえに愛おしい、人と人とが織りなすドラマを描き続けました。

Not only in Japan, but Dr. Tezuka is giving huge influence all over the world through his manga and anime works. “Lion King” that Disney produced in 1994 is widely appreciated in the whole world. However, the content and the style of the work is extremely similar to “Jungle Taitei” that Dr. Tezuka created manga in 1950 and became anime in 1965. In Japan it was very controversial that Disney stole the work of Tezuka after he passed away. But Tezuka Production didn’t ask for compensation from Disney because Dr. Tezuka used to admire the works of Diney when alive.

手塚先生は、実は日本だけではなく広く世界中にその漫画作品を通して大きな影響を与えている存在でもあります。ディズニーが1994年に公開した「ライオンキング」は全世界で広く観覧されていますが、実はその内容及び画風が手塚先生が1950年に漫画を描いて1965年に日本でアニメ化された「ジャングル大帝」に酷似しているのです。日本では、手塚先生の死後ディズニーが作品を盗作したと大きな論議を呼びましたが、手塚プロダクションは手塚先生は生前ディズニー作品を敬愛していたことを挙げ、ディズニー側に賠償などは求めませんでした。

After the manga lecture, I asked for questionnaires. I found that many of the students watch Japanese anime and read manga so enthusiastically, and they receive various messages and thoughts from them. A student wrote that Fujiko Fujio world has dreams, a student wrote that she likes Astro Boy, a student wrote the characters of Hayao Miyazaki are good role models. Names of manga artists, Kohei Horikoshi, Katuhiro Ohtomo, Yoshihiro Togashi, Yoshiki Nakamura were mentioned. Titles of manga, AKIRA, NARUTO, Fairly Tale, Sayanara Zetubou Sensei, JoJo no kimyouna bouken, were also mentioned.

講義の後に行ったアンケートでは、多くの学生達が日本のアニメや漫画をとても熱心に見ていて、そこから様々なメッセージや思想を受け取っていることが分かりました。藤子不二雄の世界観には夢がある、鉄腕アトムが好きだ、宮崎駿の登場人物は良いお手本であるなど書かれていました。堀越耕平、大友克洋、冨樫義博、仲村佳樹、AKIRA、NARUTO、フェアリーテイル、さよなら絶望先生、ジョジョの奇妙な冒険、などの名前も挙がっていました。

Manga is an art that depicts human nature both positive and negative, sometimes it can be very dark. However, I was so glad to know that the style of expressing humanity is deeply loved in Iceland. I was so grateful that I was able to recognize the prestige of manga, the unique soft power that Japan cherishes.

暗部も含めた人間の心の奥を深く探りゆく、漫画やアニメという表現形態がアイスランドの地で愛されていることを知り、日本が持つその独特なソフトパワーの底力を再認識出来てとても嬉しく誇らしく思っています。
