Once read an article, as you get aged you come to appreciate subtle and transient beauty in nature such as flower, bird, breeze, and the moon. You come to cherish four season changing, finding one and only moment as it flows through.

大人になると、花鳥風月を愛でる様になる。そういう記事を読んだ。自然の中に宿る四季折々の微かな移ろいを、その瞬間にしか見ることが出来ない愛おしいものとして、より深く心に刻む様になるということだろう。

As I get aged one by one, I come to fully recognize the sense. Nature wraps us up changing ceaselessly. Sometimes drastically, at times tenderly, intensely, and suffocatingly densely. When writing or reading open up a window, sounds of breeze, insects, summer night frogs croaking come in like playing music. I find them sheerly beautiful.

年を一つ一つ重ねるにつれて、その感覚は私自身にも染み込んできた。目の前にある自然は、絶えず表情を変えて私達を包み込む。時に激しく、時に優しく、時に苛烈に、時に鬱陶しいほど濃密に。窓を開け放しにしてモノを書いたり読んだりしている時に聞こえてくる風の音、虫の音、夏の夜のカエルの合唱、その一つ一つを、嗚呼、いいな、と思う。

And last night, I participated an event of ‘Light of Firefly, Light of Ramune’ held by Kama city and Kyushu Sangyo University. The theme is to drink Ramune (Japanese cider transformed form lemonade) appreciating fireflies and concert. Both Ramune and fireflies are iconic summer symbol of Japan. In the darkness the attendants saw numerous fireflies and listened to songs with ukulele, it was such a cool event. Capturing transient beauty just before rainy season.

そして昨晩『ホタルのヒカリ、ラムネのヒカリ』という嘉麻市と九州産業大学が企画した、ホタルを愛でながらラムネを飲み、コンサートを聴くという催しに参加して来た。ラムネも蛍も日本の夏を彩る風物詩。その二つを味わいながら自然の中に身を置いて、暗闇の中、これまでに見たことが無いほどの数の蛍が行き交う様を見ながら、ウクレレの弾き語りを聴くという、それは粋な時間だった。梅雨入り前のほんのひと時の移ろいを捉えた、素敵な日本情緒だ。

The music played in the dark was so round and tender, played quietly. A song as a mother to her child, or an English song for peace. Fireflies were attracted to the singing voice and there came one after another. Wondering if the sound waves were tender and euphonious for fireflies as well.

暗闇の中で奏でられる音楽は、まあるく、柔らかく、小さな音で演奏されて、お母さんが子供を思う気持ちが歌われたり、平和についての英語の歌があったり、蛍もその歌声に誘われてどんどん近くにやって来た。音の周波数で、蛍にも優しい音色が分かるのかも知れない。

Firstly, the attendants gathered up at a venue, and had a lecture for fireflies and Ramune, then took a bus to the source of Onga river. The lecture was consisted of 2 parts, first learned the ecology of fireflies, and learned studies of Ramune analyzing form Social Design perspective. Ramune story widely favored in Japanese summer festivals was filled with trivia and so mesmerizing.

まずは参加者は会場に集まって、蛍とラムネについての講義を受けた後に、遠賀川源流までバスで揺られて行った。その講義は二部構成で、まずは生物としての蛍の生態を聞き、次はラムネをソーシャルデザインの立場から見た研究について教わった。日本の夏祭りで愛されるラムネについての講義は、豆知識が詰まっていてとても興味深かった。

Didn’t know names of fireflies of Japan, and I learned regarding Genji-Botaru firefly raised in clear stream, males fly higher twinkling and females repeat emitting light near the water. Ramune is in a glass bottle with a marble. It’s summer joy to drink sweet cider, while listening to cool sound of the marble rolling in the bottle. It was surprising to know that in Japan there’s only one marble factory in Miyazaki.

ゲンジボタルとヘイケボタルがいるのを知らなかったし、清流で育つゲンジボタルは、ふわふわと飛ぶのは殆どオスで、下でボーッと点滅を繰り返すのは殆どメスだと言うことも初めて知った。ラムネと言えば、ラムネ瓶にはビー玉が使われている。そのカラカラと鳴る音を聞きながら、涼を耳で感じながら、爽やかにほの甘い炭酸水を飲むと言うのが夏の楽しみだ。驚いたことにビー玉を作っている工場は全国に一つだけで、それは宮崎にあると言うのも面白い。

Speaking of fireflies, I recall words written in ‘The Pillow Book’ about 1,000 years ago.

蛍と言えば、私は枕草子の『春はあけぼの』の中で書かれた言葉を思い出す。

夏は夜。月のころはさらなり、闇もなほ、蛍のおほく飛びちがいたる。また、ただ一つ二つなど、ほのかにうち光ていくもをかし。雨など降るもをかし。

In summer, night is supreme. Needless to say, the moon time is beautiful. But also in darkness, plenty of fireflies flying around is stunning. And poetic it is, just one or two flying across slightly shining. Rain fall is tasteful as well.

Transcending over 1,000 years and sharing same spirit as Heian Era aristocrats, we still cherish playful spirit, uniting various things or untying. And we love appreciating fireflies. It is something so enchanting, leaving impressions in our mind with beautiful echos.

私たちは千年の時を超えて、平安貴族と変わらぬ心で、いろんな遊び心を交えながら、いろんなものを結びつけたり解いたりして、今も蛍を愛でている。それは何か佳き余韻を残すものとして、じんわりと心に響いてゆく。
