Talent is the matter of genuine energy. If the energy level and the purity are both high, you can reach out far and wide place. I became certain once again, after having an interview with Ms. Furusawa Kanoko who is art director/ graphic designer of Design Supermarket in Nagasaki.

才能とは、結局のところ純粋熱量だ。そのエネルギー値と純度が高ければ高いほど、遠く広い場所へと辿り着くことができる。今回、長崎でアートディレクター兼グラフィックデザイナーとして活躍する、デザイン・スーパーマーケットの古澤かのこさんを訪れ、話をさせて貰って益々そう確信した。

Kanoko is my dear friend. She is friend from tennis club in junior high school. Both Kanoko and I were so corky and quirky. We were so very peculiar. Singing along silliest parody songs out loud, and chatting and chatting over absurd topics. And our tennis coach was always mad at us. We both worked hard for studying, yet we were so goofy and silly and lovable.

かのこさん、私にとっての大好きなかのこは、中学時代のテニス部の仲間だ。私もかのこも、平たく言うと「変ない馬鹿チン」だった。一緒に替え歌を大声で歌ったり、しょうもない話で盛り上がり過ぎて、テニスの練習中にコーチからよく怒られていた。二人とも勉強は頑張っていたけれど、なんというか、本当に「愛しき変ない馬鹿チン」だったのだ。

“I was thinking nothing, and always drawing. I was doodling during class and drawing on the back of ad paper at home.” Says Kanoko. I can still picture her drawing vividly in my mind. I remember her design that students draw in art class competition was selected and printed for summer vacation booklet cover. It was about a boy and a girl eating watermelon sitting at the balcony and playing fireworks. And big firework was shooting up in the sky. The quality of the design was remarkably high, evoking some nostalgia and warmth. I believe it is called talent.

かのこは「何も考えてなくて、いつもお絵描きしてた。授業中も落書きしてたし、家でも広告の裏にいつも描いてた。」と。かのこの絵を、私は今でもハッキリと覚えている。美術の試験で描いたデザイン画が、夏休みの冊子のカバーを飾ったことも、軒先で花火をしながらスイカを食べている男の子と女の子、その後ろに打ち上げ花火が上がっていた、その絵の構成クオリティが段違いに高くて、どこかしら懐かしく暖かったことも。そう思わせる力を才能というのだ、きっと。

In senior high school she belonged to tennis club, but she was scouted by art club teacher to join art club so she joined art club also. And when she began drawing dessin sketch, she was marveled at her own talent. “Splendid! How splendid I am!” Yes, indeed. You get amazed by your own giftedness. It happens a lot! We both agreed and laughed out loud. Kanoko is such a nice folk.

かのこは、高校でもテニス部に入ったけれど、美術部の顧問の先生からスカウトされて掛け持ちで美術部にも在籍していたそうだ。そしてデッサンを始めたら「うま！私、すごいうま！」と自分で自分にビックリしたそうだ。そうよね〜、参ったな、またこんなに良いもの出来ちゃったよ〜、とか思うよね〜！と天晴れな話にまた一緒に盛り上がる。かのこは、本当にいい奴だ。

Kanoko studied in Saga University educational art course. And she got teaching diploma of art for junior and senior high school. And the time of graduation, Japan was in massive recession. Meanwhile she challenged various occupations, then she made up her mind if she’s got to be worried about something she wanted to be worried about color and design for job, then she studied design in vocational school. And while she was working in Fukuoka, she encountered with future husband Mr. Furusawa Takashi who was furniture designer back then, current president of Design Supermarket.

かのこは大学は佐賀大学の教育美術へ進んだ。そこで中学高校の美術教員の免許も取った。そして私達が大学を卒業した頃、世の中は超氷河期だった。そんな中、かのこは紆余曲折あり、どうせ悩むならば仕事の色や構図で悩みたい、と職業訓練校でデザインを学ぶ。そして福岡で働いていた頃、家具デザイナーをされていたご主人、現在のデザイン・スーパーマーケット代表取締役の古澤高志さんと出会う。

Takashi san was also outstanding. He designed a crib that can swing with a baby on first time in the world back then. He had various media interviews, and he was grinning in front of TV watching NHK-BS interview at a hotel in Vietnam alone on business trip. “Absolutely! Yes, you can’t stop making a grin when you are featured on TV! You feel you want to compliment yourself!” We both agreed. Takashi san was also an editor of a magazine that was like a Bible for youngsters in Fukuoka in 2000s. It was surprising since I loved reading the book, ‘no!’. And Takashi san is also teaching Design Thinking in university as a lecturer.

高志さんも凄腕で、当時、世界初の赤ちゃんを乗せて揺らすことが出来るベビーベッドをデザイン設計されて、メディア取材を多く受け、ベトナム出張中に自身が取り上げられた NHK-BS の番組をホテルで観て、一人でニヤニヤされていたとのこと。そうですよね〜、テレビ出るとニヤニヤしますよね〜！良い仕事してるなって思いますよね〜！とこちらも盛り上がる。また、2000年代の福岡の若者の間でバイブルの様な存在だったno! (エヌオー）という雑誌の編集者でもあったそうだ。私もよくno! を読んでいたのでびっくりだ。加えて、高志さんはデザイン思考について、大学で講師としても教えられているそうだ。

Kanoko’s talk of professionalism is much to learn. She is designing crisp color combination that people choose in a second. Eat the product at first, ask target generation and price and place for sale, then pursue the design. She is always seeking for what Nagasaki identity is, based on Nagasaki culture fusion of Japanese, Chinese, and Dutch. She also gets inspiration from church stained glass or Dejima Wharf window frame arch.

かのこのデザイナーとしてのプロフェッショナリズムの話は、勉強になる。秒で選ばれる色彩のはっきりしたデザインを作ること。商品をまず試食して、売りたい年齢層、価格帯、売る場所を聞いて、それからデザインに落とし込んでゆくそうだ。長崎の和華蘭文化（日本、中華、オランダの混じり合った文化）を基にした、長崎らしさって何だろうということを追い求め、教会のステンドグラスや出島の窓枠のアーチからも着想を得たりするそうだ。

Kanoko’s favorite painter is Marc Chagall, favorite designer is Tsumori Chisato. And she often acquires ideas from William Morris. Kanoko’s design is based on nostalgic Japanese modern. She said she looks at trend as well, but avoids becoming too trendy.

好きな画家はシャガール、好きなデザイナーはツモリチサト、デザインはウィリアムモリスを参考にすることも多いそう。かのこのデザインは、ちょっと懐かしい和モダンを基調にしている。トレンドも見るそうだけれど、トレンドが入り過ぎないようにしているそうだ。

Take a closer look at each design, you can sense that the very designer is having so much fun when creating. It’s like a little kid spirit contemplating to make a masterpiece for summer vacation project. It’s joyful to see, so you want to bring it back home, and you want to give it to someone for a present. It is as simple as that.

一つ一つのデザインを見てゆくと、作ってる本人が楽しくてたまらんチンな気持ちで制作しているのが伝わってくる。子供が夏休みの宿題をねじり鉢巻頭に巻いて、ハリキッテ作っているものの延長線上にある感じだ。見ていて物凄く楽しくなるから、お家に連れて帰りたくなるし、人に贈りたくなる。とってもシンプルな構図だ。

At a hotel shop, I came across Nagasaki sweets can that of Kanoko’s design. I became euphoric and brought back home. Few hours before, Kanoko informed me that she designed the motif of Nagasaki city tram. I’m so very proud of Kanoko.

ホテルの売店で、かのこがデザインした長崎銘菓クルスのカンカンを発見し、私もウキウキしてお家に連れて帰ってきた。これは長崎名物チンチン電車をモチーフにしていると、数時間前にかのこから聞いたばかりだから、益々かのこが誇らしい。

I was able to visit Nagasaki and I told her my gratitude in person that I’ve wanted to say. Some years ago, I was trapped in a scandal that could be Yahoo headline news. I was crying bitterly day after day. At a time like that God dispatched me an angel, Kanoko. She didn’t know anything, but she said she wanted to support me. Then she designed this ©︎ Aya’s Cool Japan Blog logo for super exceptional price, not only that she gifted me business cards. I will never forget the loving-kindness.

今回長崎を訪れて、ずっと言いたかったお礼もかのこに直接伝えることが出来た。私が以前取り組んでいた仕事で、Yahooニュースにでもなりそうな大掛かりな計略に見舞われた時、毎日嗚咽しながら号泣していた。しかしそんな時に、神様が私に天使のかのこを遣わして下さったのだ。何も知らないかのこは、私の活動を応援したいというただその思いだけから、考えられない超破格値で、粋なこの ©️ Aya’s Cool Japan Blog のロゴデザインをしてくれ、名刺まで作ってくれたのだ。あの時の御恩は一生忘れません。

職業が人を作ると言うけれど、そのことを裏返すと、仕事にはその人の本質が全て現れているものなのだ、本当に。かのこ、お互い良い仕事をしてゆきましょうぞ！友は宝だ。
