Calligraphy for Fun

Japanese, names in Chinese character in Japanese, Wabi Sabi、learning Japanese, English Japanese bilingual,

It’s nothing to brag up, yet my handwriting is very bad. I attended Japanese calligraphy class for a year in elementary school, but I didn’t get better. Other than job, I keep jotting down lots of things on various notebooks every day, and contemplating future plan. However, all those handwritings are not beautiful. I must admit, it’s terrible. Rather than intention to write prettily, I focus on tracking down things bubbling up in my mind like a fountain. The more I write, the more intriguing it becomes, then end up writing rather speedily not beautifully.

Nevertheless, I deeply love the act of handwriting. Meanwhile, I was chatting with friend on the phone, she said she started picking up calligraphy class. I was deeply moved by the reason of her motivation, and said “Let me be your disciple!” She shared that she wants to master Japanese culture more deeply, and wants to use her giftedness for others. Her words touched my heart strings. In a nutshell, I also started something new.

However, I don’t start taking calligraphy class, I cooked up something different with a twist of my own recipe. Firstly I spent a night practicing calligraphy with a handy calligraphy pen. Practiced the basic technique of writing I mastered in elementary school and calligraphy class. The next day, I went to 100 yen shop and bought 2 calligraphy pens for 220 yen including tax.

What I want to write with a handy calligraphy pen, is to write English names in Chinese character. Chinese characters of Japanese have various ways to read and each has own meaning. This trait of representing meaning each is mystical for people abroad. And when I write names in Chinese character for foreigners, they get overjoyed. Since alphabet only represents sound, so Chinese characters of Japanese mixing sound and meaning is mesmerizing. Strokes of beautiful flows, back of ink and white of paper, they are resonating with Wabi Sabi, I wonder.

And here, I picked up some English names. In European languages, names that are originated in the Bible are plenty, so I selected names relating to the Bible.

What Chinese character to match with, what meaning to load, what story to entangle, pondered so deeply and checked with a dictionary and carry on the task. This is fun. I was once reminded by an American whose hobby is Japanese calligraphy, saying “Aya, having Chinese character education is a big blessing for you.” The core is coming closer and closer.

Here I want to explain each Chinese character that I picked up for 24 names in total.
