Visited AoDai Museum about an hour drive from the center of HoChiMinh. The vast premises is so elegant, evoking nostalgia. It is distant from floods of motor bikes and auto emissions of bustling metropolis, there is slow and almost sleepy atmosphere ideal for a nap. This is a private garden museum run by Mr. Si Hoang, the leading AoDai designer of Vietnam.
ホーチミン中心地から車でおよそ一時間の郊外にある、アオザイ博物館へ。広大な敷地が広がる、まさに風光明媚な桃源郷のようなところだ。バイクの洪水からも都会の喧騒の排気ガスからも離れた、東南アジアのまったりゆったりとした、お昼寝にも良さそうな長閑な時間が流れている。ここは、ベトナムを代表するアオザイデザイナーのシー・ホアン氏（Si Hoang) 個人が運営するアオザイ博物館だ。
However, to get here we went through a poor district like a slam, and witnessed wide economic gap. When I was 18 and a backpacker, nonchalantly walking along such street flipping flip flops. But now I’m an adult, and feel scary to walk by. The summer, traveling along Malaysia and Singapore with 4 of us classmates. We were fed up with the heat, fatigue, cheap inn, and Malay cuisine eating for every meal at a vendor. At times we got irritated one another, but we must not split, and completed the trip. It’s a treasury memory of mine.
しかし、そこへ辿り着くまでには貧民街のような場所を通り、経済格差をまざまざとみる。十八歳のバックパッカー時代は、何も気にせずゴム草履をペタペタ言わせながら歩いていたような場所だけれど、大人になった今はもう怖くて歩けない。マレーシアとシンガポールを旅したあの夏、クラスメイトの女の子四人で、暑さと疲労と安宿と屋台で毎回食べるマレー料理に飽き飽きして、時々ムッと険悪な雰囲気になりつつも、仲間割れはしたらいかんという命題の元、旅を完遂させた思い出は宝物の記憶だ。
Vietnam was a vassal nation of China, I studied in Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, South East Asia Department Malaysia major. Vassal nation means, Vietnam was like a servant to China. Therefore, there are many China taste things. Aside from politics, and from cultural aspect, Vietnam localized Chinese style looks lovely with some sweet sentiment.
ベトナムは中国の属国だったと、東京外国語大学東南アジア課程マレーシア語専攻時代に習った。属国とは、つまり従属国という意味で、中国の召使いのような関係性だったわけだ。だからベトナムには中華様式のものが沢山ある。政治を抜きにして文化面から見ると、ベトナム化した中国様式には、甘い情緒が宿っていてなかなかのもの。
Other than my dress, there are various kinds of AoDai. You can rent and photoshoot. It is a photo shooting spot for wedding, and commemorating celebration such as entrance ceremony or graduation.
私が着ているもの以外にも、多種多様なアオザイがあり、借りて写真を撮ることができる。結婚式の前撮りや、入学卒業や記念日などに写真撮影に人が訪れる場所でもあるそうだ。
Exhibition of AoDai. AoDai means long upper wear, it is originated in Qing Dynasty (China) China dress. I googled Wikipedia and other sources, and it said it was not for native everyday wear, only bureaucrats serving for the court and aristocrats and Royal family could wear. AoDai was special clothing for noble figures. The top picture, AoDai I put on is for empress. And I assume the long sleeves represent the sign of nobility that rejects any labor.
アオザイの展示を見る。アオザイとは長い上着という意味で、清朝（中国）から移入されたチャイナドレスが起源だそう。アオザイをウィキペディアや他の情報で調べると、土着の日常着ではなく、官服として宮廷に使える官吏や貴族王族がお召しになれていた、やんごとなき方のための衣類だったそうだ。最初に私が着ているアオザイは皇后様がお召しになるもので、その袖の長さは、一切の労働を受け付けない高貴な者たる刻印の現れなのだろう。
The design of AoDai diversified as time descended. Nowadays, AoDai is for special occasion Sunday best. It is the pride of tribe for Vietnamese. In short, AoDai is like Kimono for Japanese. And white AoDai that high school girls wearing for uniform was stunningly beautiful.
時代を経るごとにアオザイのデザインも多様化していった。今ではアオザイは特別の晴れの日に着るものであり、ベトナム人にとって民族の誇りでもある。つまりアオザイは、日本人にとっての着物のような存在だそう。女子高生が着ている制服の白いアオザイは本当に美しかった。
Antique pots and classical sewing machines that sewed myriads of AoDai. Checking each and it was numbered all different year. Ladies were sewing AoDai after AoDai, using their hands every day and weaved up the culture of handicrafts. To know more about Vietnam, I watched some Vietnam movies, and ladies sewing and embroidering were depicted often. Handicraft is deep rooted Vietnam culture.
年代物の壺やアオザイを縫ってきた歴戦のミシンたち。型番を見てゆくと、全て製造年が違っていた。何着も何着も女たちが日々その手を動かしながら、手工芸文化を紡いで来たのだ。ベトナムについてもっと知りたいと、ベトナム映画も何本か観たけれど、縫い物や刺繍をする女たちが度々描かれていた。手工芸は、それだけ深く根付いた文化なのだ。
As a lady, I love wearing something beautiful. But I think it is more exciting to design a dress of my taste and give some twists and make hard work and complete sewing the dress, rather than served up one as a princess. And take a picture with my own handmade dress is even better.
美しいものを着たいのは女心だけれど、私はお姫様になって恭しく差し出されるドレスを着るよりも、自分の好みにデザインして、色々工夫して苦心してドレスを裁縫して作る方が面白いと思っている。そしてそれを着て写真に写るのなら、もっと楽しいと思う。
Coco Chanel designed accessary, clothing, and perfume by herself and she put them on for advertisement and made a success for business. The life of Chanel to become a frontier is my cup of tea, rather than Marie Antoinette who had extravagantly luxurious lifestyle served up by servants. I definitely choose designer over princess. Since I can’t think of anything that is more attractive than producing something using my hands. Ladies of Vietnam, who have been working and using their hands ceaselessly are so cool. Probably, it was the biggest harvest I got in this Vietnam trip.
ココ・シャネルは、アクセサリーや被服や香水を自分でデザインして、自らがそれを着て広告塔になってビジネスを成功させた。マリー・アントワネットになって、召使いにかしずかれて贅と放埒の限りを尽くすより、シャネルになって先駆者として生きる方に女の美学を見る。お姫様よりも断然デザイナーだ。自分の手を動かしてものを生み出すよりも面白いことは、ちょっと思い付かない。常に手を動かし働くベトナムの女たちは素敵だ。それが今回のベトナム旅の一番の収穫だったかもしれない。
