＜Potter of Santoh en, Ms. Yamashita Chiho/ 山陶園の陶芸家、桜こころ窯の山下智穂さん＞

We visited Dr. Kitasato Museum in Ogumi, Kumamoto the end of last year. Enjoyed roadtrip then, so here I’d like to introduce the lovely moments.

昨年末に熊本の小国町にある北里北三郎記念館を訪れた。その時に熊本ロードトリップを楽しんできたので、そこでの素敵な出会いもご紹介したい。

We’re so fond of hand-crafted pottery, therefore whenever we have a chance, we go visit pottery studio on our journey. In Kumamoto, I was googling searching for good one, then found out Santoh-en. The pictures looked so enticing, then we drove up there appreciating the great nature of Mt. Aso from the car window.

手捻りの器が大好きで、機会があれば行く先々の窯元を訪れるようにしている。熊本でも、どこかいい窯はないかと検索していたら、たまたま山陶園に行き当たった。これはよろしき芳しき香りが漂っているぞ、とはやる心を抑えつつ、阿蘇の大観峰を走り抜けて大自然を満喫しつつ山陶園に到着した。

And I encountered with works of Yamashita Chiho san. The moment I had a glimpse of them, I fell in love with the Kawaii lovely handicrafts. It is filled with charming warmth. And Chiho san herself was reflected upon the pottery, the heart and prayer and everything. Chiho san told us that she had apprentice training in Amakusa, Kumamoto. And I handed her my business card saying that I’d love to introduce her on the blog.

そして山下智穂さんの作品達と出会う。一つ一つ丁寧に心を砕いて、いじらしいほど可愛い心で作られている器に、私は恋に落ちてしまった。そしてその作品を生み出す智穂さんの佇まいも、その作品の想いや心持ちが全て現れているようだった。智穂さんは熊本の天草で修行をされていたそうだ。是非ブログでご紹介したいと名刺をお渡しする。

These are Chiho san’s mugs and small plates that I brought back home.

こちらが我が家に連れ帰ってきた、智穂さんが作ったマグと小皿。

The blue bird mug became my treasure. On the back side a honeybee is flying and mimosa and purple thistle are designed, the nature of Mt. Aso is flourishing. Chiho san taught me thistles growing in colonies in late summer are so dreamy. The time I pour coffee in the mug taking good time is blissful. The mug cost 4,000 yen, nevertheless I believe it’s more worthy.

青い鳥のマグは宝物になった。後ろ側には密蜂が飛んでいて、阿蘇の自然を織り込んだミモザや紫のヒゴタイ（ルリタマアザミ）も描かれている。晩夏に咲くヒゴタイの群生は、とても幻想的だと智穂さんが教えて下さった。そして、このマグで丁寧にコーヒーを淹れて飲む時間が幸せだ。マグは 4,000円だったけれど、それ以上の価値があると私は思っている。

ポーランド産のお皿との相性もよろしき。

My heart was warmed up, and the Kumamoto journey goes on.

心はヌクヌクに温まり、熊本旅は続く。

For lunch, I savored red beef hamburger stake raised in the nature of Mt. Aso and fried prawn. The red beef is the local speciality. Eating life is savage yet holy on the back side. I snatch away life and I’m able to live along. So I want to live this precious life to the fullest.

お昼ご飯は阿蘇の大地で育った赤牛のハンバーグとエビフライ。赤牛は、ここまで来ないと食べられないもの。命を頂くということは残虐で、また同時に尊いことだ。命を頂いて生きているのだから、与えられた貴重な人生の時間を懸命に生き抜きたいと思う。

For coffee break, we had Mon Branc made with Oguni local sweet potato and coffee latte. The sweet potato tasted and flavored so powerful grown in the wild nature.

お茶の時間には、小国産のサツマイモで作られたモンブランとカフェラテを堪能した。芋は豊かな大地が育てた力強い野生の香りがする。

Oguni road station is so nice and peculiar. Look, I’m reflected upon the mirror! This place is a base station of Oguni town, and there are conglomerating restaurants, cafes, and eat local food markets. I bought citrus pepper paste, dried shitake mushrooms, and Kumamoto rice. They are so very tasty.

小国の道の駅の建物は珍奇でナイスだ。写真を撮っている私の姿も鏡に映り込んでいる。ここは小国町の基地局みたいな所で、レストランやカフェや産直が集まっている。産直で買った黄色柚子胡椒と干し椎茸と熊本産米を食べているけれど、素敵に美味しいものばかり。

On the way home, we stopped at Tsuetate hot spring.

帰りには、杖立温泉の立ち寄り湯に足を伸ばす。

The rustic hot spring resort evokes sentiment and romanticism. And we dropped by our favorite Izumi-Ya inn. It was a pity that lady’s bath was not with my favorite ‘cypress steam box’ this time, ‘cypress steam box’ is that you sit in a cypress wooden box putting out head, and steam up whole body with hot mist. The aroma of cypress is the scent of parent’s home. That’s why I’m loving it.

鄙びた温泉街が旅情を誘う。そして行きつけの旅館泉屋さんへ。今回は女湯が大好きな「檜蒸し箱」ありのお湯じゃなかったので残念だったけれど。檜蒸し箱とは、檜の箱に座って入って、頭だけを上から出して、全身を温泉の湯気でホカホカに温めるもの。檜の香りは実家の香りなので、私はとりわけ好きなのだ。

There is a steam spot in Tsuetate hot spring resort, and locals can steam vegetables and meat for free. Last time, we met a father and a daughter steaming wild boar that he hunted. The blessing of mountains and the breath from the earth, the nature and people’s life are harmoniously coexisting.

杖立温泉街には蒸し場があり、地元の人が温泉の湯気で野菜や肉を蒸すことが出来る。以前来た時には、山で仕留めた猪を蒸している親子連れの方と出会った。山の恵と池泉の息吹、ここでは人々の暮らしと自然が地続きなのだ。

After the night veil descended, steam is ascending mystically.

夜の帳が降りた後、立ち登る湯煙もまた情感がある。

In 2025, I persevered and made good achievements. However I think I ended up working too hard. So this year, I want to enrich my off-line life more having digital detox now and then. And I want to make my work and studies and daily life fruitful and beautiful.

2025年は色々と頑張って良い結果も出せたのだけれど、ちょっと頑張り過ぎてしまったという反省があるので、今年は上手くデジタルデトックスもしながら、アナログ生活も充実させて、仕事と研究と日々の暮らしを美しく実りあるものにしたいと思っている。
