80 years ago in Nagasaki, on August 9th 1945 at 11:02, America B29 atomic bombs were dropped. Right after in the area, it was unfolded hellish sight of screaming and dreadful bloody mass destruction. And 80 years have passed, it has been ceaselessly conducted peace education in order to pass on the torch of peace. The effort piled up one by one is sheerly precious, and Hibakusha (atomic bomb victims) group of Hiroshima and Nagasaki was awarded the utmost honor of Nobel Peace Prize in 2024.

今から80年前の長崎、1945年8月9日午前11時2分、アメリカのB29原爆が投下されました。その直後、長崎一帯には阿鼻叫喚の地獄絵図としか言えない異様な景色が広がります。そしてあれから80年、平和の灯火を絶やさぬように、長崎では涙ぐましいほどの努力に基づき平和教育がなされてきました。そしてその倦まず弛まず続けられてきた地道な活動に対して、最高の栄誉であるノーベル平和賞を2024年、広島と長崎の被爆者団体が受賞したのです。

I spent junior high and senior high school days in Nagasaki, have been planted seeds of peace. And I’ve been contemplating what each one of us can do to make peace. Now I believe that fostering the prayer is the victory of peace education. And Japan has been conducting omnidirectional diplomacy after WWⅡ, it is the path of recovering from the excruciating pains and tortures of atomic bombs experience.

私も中学高校生時代を長崎県で過ごし、平和への思いの種を蒔かれてきた者です。私達一人ひとりが平和を作るために、何ができるのか。その思いを抱き続けることが、平和教育の勝利でもあると思います。そして戦後日本の全方位外交という平和外交も、その被曝体験の激烈な痛みと苦しみを克服するための道のりでもありました。

And this time, I visited Nagasaki Peace Park, and I was able to take an interview with Ms. Furusawa Hinata who is sophomore in Kassui High School in Nagasaki. She belongs to Peace Study Club, and dedicating herself to the activity.

そして今回、長崎平和公園を訪れ、この地で平和活動をしている活水高校二年生の古澤ひなたさんにインタビューをすることができました。ひなたさんは高校で平和学習部に在籍しています。

Aya: Thank you for today. Please tell me, what do you do in Peace Study Club?

綾：今日はありがとうございます。平和学習部というものはどんな活動をしているのですか？

Hinata: Many students visit Nagasaki for school excursion, and we tell them about peace. Also, we are taking part in ‘10,000 People Signature Campaign by High School Students’. We are collecting signature for the purpose of Japan to ratify Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. We collected 110,000 signatures this year, and we’ve collected 2 million signatures so far. This signature campaign is produced by high school students, and I heard it was nominated for the last year’s Nobel Peace Price as well.

ひなた：長崎にはよく修学旅行生が来るので、その修学旅行生に平和のことを伝えています。また、高校生一万人署名活動というものに取り組んでいます。これは核不拡散条約を日本が批准する為に、署名を集めるものです。今年だけで11万人の署名があり、これまでに200万人の署名が集まりました。この高校生一万人署名活動は高校生が作ったもので、昨年のノーベル平和賞にもノミネートされていたそうです。

Aya: Really? That’s awesome!

綾：え〜！それは素晴らしいですね。

Hinata: Nagasaki is very avid for peace education, but other prefectures students study about it a little in text book. Well-known journalist Mr. Ikegami Akira is supporting ‘10,000 People Signature Campaign by High School Students’ and I met him yesterday’s (Aug.9th) Peace Ceremony.

ひなた：被爆地の長崎は平和教育に熱心ですが、他県では教科書でちょっと学ぶだけです。ジャーナリストの池上彰さんが、高校生一万人署名活動を支援しておられ、昨日の（8月9日）の平和式典でお会いしました。

Aya: Oh, I see. What do you do in the club in particular?

綾：なるほど。それでは具体的にどんな活動をしているのですか？

Hinata: Every Sunday, we conduct signature campaign in front of Atomic Bomb Museum. My senior who is High School Peace Messenger went to Oslo, Norway for the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony, and she told us the term ‘Hibakusha’ (atomic bomb victims) is now international word. It is thanks to the activity of the victims group and peace education. Current nuclear weapons are not used for 80 years, nonetheless peace constructed upon them in very fragile.

ひなた：毎週日曜日に原爆資料館前で署名活動をしています。高校生平和大使をしている先輩がノーベル平和賞の式典にも行き、ノルウェーのオスロでも、被爆者という言葉は世界共通語になっていると話していました。それは今までの被爆者団体や平和教育の活動によるものだと。今ある核兵器は80年使われていないけれど、それは脆い平和であって弱点があるのです。

Aya: Yes, indeed. I agree with you. Hinata san, you are high school student, and you’ll soon become adult. What do you want to do for peace for taking whole life?

綾：本当にそうですね。ひなたさんは今は高校生ですが、これから大人になってゆき、平和に関してどういう風に生涯に渡って関わって行きたいと思っていますか。

Hinata: When we are doing signature campaign, adults always accompany with us. I want to become an adult who support the kids.

ひなた：署名活動をしていると、署名をする時は必ず大人が一緒に来ます。その支える側の大人になって行きたいです。

Aya: I see, I see. And lastly, what do you think about growing up in Nagasaki?

綾：うんうん。それでは、最後に長崎で成長することについてどう思っていますか。

Hinata: I adore metropolis. But, when conducting signature campaign in front of Atomic Bomb Museum, I encounter with people from all over the world and all across the country. And I think Nagasaki is the city where we have deep connection with people. Okunchi Odori Machi (dancing neighbor community for Okunchi festival) is one example, and we have very rich culture. And if I keep on studying English, I can share about peace with people abroad more.

ひなた：都会にも憧れはあるけれど、原爆資料館前で署名活動をしていると、いろんな国の人、いろんな都道府県からの人に出会います。それもあって、長崎は人とのつながりが深い街だと思います。おくんちの踊り町なんかもそうだし、とても豊かな文化があります。そして英語の勉強も続けて行ったら、外国人にも平和のことをもっと伝えられると思っています。

Aya: I see. I was able to learn a lot from you. Thank you very much indeed. Best of luck on your journey!
