On Mainichi Shinbun Newspaper, Mr. Yann Touret who’s introducing the charm of Japanese pottery to France was featured. Mr. Touret found a job in MUJI Paris branch, and came to interested in Japanese culture through ‘The Tale of Genji’. And when first visited Kyoto Japan, he was intrigued and mesmerized by the variety of innocent and delicate handcrafted pottery used for each cuisine and confection.

毎日新聞の「ひと」欄に、日本の陶芸の魅力をフランスに紹介しているヤン・トゥーレさんと言う方の記事が載っていた。トゥーレさんは無印良品のパリ店舗に就職した後、源氏物語を通じて日本の文化に興味を抱いた。そして旅行で初めて日本の京都を訪れた時に、料理や和菓子に合わせて多種多様な陶磁器が使い分けられて提供され、手作りの素朴さと繊細さに惹かれたそうだ。

‘Not mass production, yet pottery brimmed with locality and individuality are available for reasonable price, and they are used for everyday life. That’s the sheer uniqueness of Japan. I want to share this fascination with the world.’ And he visited numerous potters and purchased their works. He also runs a French website ‘Maison Wabi-Sabi’, and sells those potteries. I checked the homepage and found that it was beautifully designed, combined with pictures and photos and words resonating one another. The aesthetics pursuing for Wabi Sabi is reflected upon.

「大量生産ではなく地域性と個性にあふれた陶器が、高価でなく生活に密着して使われているのは日本くらいしかない。この魅力を世界に広めていきたい」と、これまでに多くの陶芸家の元を訪れ、買付をされている。そしてメゾン・ワビ・サビと言うフランス語のサイトを開設されていて、販売も手がけている。興味を引いたのでそのサイトを覗いてみたところ、絵と写真と言葉が響き合う、美しく設計されたサイトだった。侘び寂びの美意識を追い求めた世界観も織り込まれている。

I was nurtured in the culture that handcrafted pottery is residing together, and frequently go visit potters in various places. So I felt the price tag of Maison Wabi-Sabi seemed fairly expensive. However, Mr. Touret makes a voyage all the way from France, and visits potters often the case dwelling in deep mountain, and purchases pottery created with passion pouring potter’s heart and soul. Considering the background story, it maybe not too costly for people in French sphere.

生まれた時から手捻りの器が暮らしの中にある文化に育てられ、今でも実際に各地の窯元を訪れて器を買うことが日常である私の感覚で言えば、メゾン・ワビ・サビでは結構高い値段がつけてある印象だ。しかし遠路はるばるフランスから訪れ、多くの場合山深い地にある窯元まで赴き、そこで一つ一つ丹精込めて作られた器を買付たものと思えば、フランス圏の方たちにとって高価にすぎることはないのかもしれない。

And we cherish and foster the pottery culture, using handcrafted pottery mostly. My everyday dinner is fixed within 40 minutes, regular Washoku Japanese dishes. Though, it seems my skill and presentation better up 30% with the affectionate pottery.

そして作陶文化を愛し慈しむ我が家の器は、ほぼ全て手捻りのもの。私が毎日作る夕ご飯は、40分ほどで出来るごく普通の和食を中心とした料理だけれど、愛着がある器によそって頂くと、腕前も出来栄えも三割り増しになる様な気がする。

And here’s one more. Made Dalgona Coffee made a boom in Korea. Mixing instant coffee, sugar, and small amount of hot water by hand mixer until foamy. Then put the coffee foam on top of hot milk. The slight sweetness was so nostalgic, reminiscing childhood breakfast that mother prepared for me and brother. Digging in the foam further is the taste of the secret garden.

最後におまけ。韓国発祥のダルゴナ珈琲なるものを作ってみた。インスタント珈琲と砂糖を少量のお湯で溶いて、ハンドミキサーでアワアワになるまで泡立てる。その珈琲泡を温めた牛乳に乗せた。子供の頃の朝ごはんに母が私と兄に作ってくれていた、懐かしの珈琲牛乳そのものの仄かな甘さだった。そしてこのアワアワを掘って行く所に、秘密の花園はあるのだ。

The world is yearning for Japan with adoring passion, but seeing from inside, our everyday life is rampant with myriads of distortions and flaws. However, like Official Hige Dandism sing along, ‘Beauty is not being scarless, the miracle is even scars are lovable’, I want to treasure the words dearly and live along my daily life.

世界が憧れの視線で熱っぽく見つめてくれる日本は、実の所、内側からみたら歪みと綻びだらけの毎日で、けれどそれでもOfficial髭男dismが歌う様に「キレイとは傷跡がないことじゃない　傷さえ愛おしいと言うキセキだ」と言う言葉を抱きしめて、この日々を生きて行きたいと思っている。
