Made a road trip to Nagato city, Yamaguchi to see and take pictures of these photogenic Red Torii; gateway to Shinto shrine. The name of the shrine is Motonosumi Shrine. Numbers of Red Torii facing the Sea of Japan are stunning. It is worth visiting. Quite a few people were there even though it was just before getting dark. This spot is popular for being instagramable.
山口の長門市まで、この有名な赤鳥居の写真を撮りに車で遠出をして来た。神社の名前は元乃隅神社。日本海を望む絶壁に立つこの赤鳥居はとても美しく、一見の価値あり。日暮れ時で暗くなって来ていたけれど、多くの人で賑わっていた。ここはインスタ映えスポットとしての人気も高い。

黄昏れ時の雰囲気をお伝えしたい。
One theory says Red Torii is originated in a ritual of Passover Holiday of Judaism written in the old testament, painting a gate with blood of lamb. But there exist many theories and I don’t know in detail. I don’t have a clue if the Red Torii reached to the far away country of Japan crossing over the oceans or if they have a completely different background. But the historical truth is that it really exists.
一説によると赤い鳥居は、旧約聖書にある、門を子羊の血で赤く塗ったユダヤ教の過越の祭りに起源を持つと言われている。しかしその他にも様々な諸説があり、詳しいことは私には分からない。遥か大海原を渡って日本にその赤い鳥居が到達したのか、或いは全く別の事柄に由来するのか。詳らかなことは分からないが、それが存在しているということが歴史の真実でもある。

見下ろすと断崖絶壁の日本海。下の方で磯釣りをしている人たちも居た。
However, this place is not a historical landmark, a bit kitsch and somehow so intriguing. Reminds me of Fushimi Inari Shrine of Kyoto. The statues of foxes are cute.
しかしながら、ここは由緒ある歴史的な建造物という訳ではなく、少し作り物っぽい様が、とても興味深い場所だった。京都の伏見稲荷を模しているのか、狐の像には、なんとも言えぬ愛嬌あり。
For dinner, we stopped by an inn named Youki-Kan.
夕ご飯は楊貴館というお宿に立ち寄った。
Ordered the most expensive course and spoiled ourselves with the delicacies. Seafood and veggie tempura, grilled beaf and veggies, sashimi raw fish, marinated veggies, pickles, miso soup (unseen in the pic), steamed egg custard, and rice with seaweed seasoning. It is typical feast of Japanese Washoku. Scallop tempura was so unusual and it was a hit. This place is near the harbor so the sashimi raw fish and tempura fish were both so fresh and savory.
楊貴妃御膳なるものを注文し、舌鼓を打つ。海の幸と野菜の天ぷら、牛肉と野菜の鉄板焼き、お刺身、野菜の和え物、香の物、写真には写っていないお味噌汁、茶碗蒸し、ワカメふりかけご飯。代表的な和食の御ご馳走が並ぶ。貝柱の天ぷらが珍しくて、とても美味だった。港が近いのでお刺身はコリコリとして、キスの天ぷらはホロホロと身がほどけて新鮮だ。
We like going for a road trip to Yamaguchi and Shimane taking a small country road not a big free way. Sanin region is so laid back and relaxing, almost none of loud advertising boards in the fields and the greenery is so pleasant and soothing. It is like from a fairy tale. I want to visit all across the county of Japan and write articles of beautiful sights both famous and unknown.
山口や島根の国道ではない県道の小さな田舎道をゆく車旅が好きで、よく山陰地方を訪れる。目に煩い看板がなく、緑が青々と茂り、御伽の国の様に長閑で美しい景色に心が和む。日本全国を回って、有名無名に関わらず、津々浦々の景勝地を訪れた記事をこれからも書いて行きたい。
Japan Studies aka Japanology is to study and examine Japan deeper and deeper as an object by taking cultural, historical, social, and linguistic approach. The study genre is very popular world wide, myriads of young Japanophiles study Japanese language and many of them aspire to be researchers. There exist neat orders in the chaos, and every small thing has its own long history on the back. The mesmerizing charm of the country of Japan keeps enticing people around the globe.
日本という対象を文化的、歴史的、社会的、言語学的に深掘りする日本学というものは、世界的にとても人気が高い学問分野であり、多くの日本びいきの若者達が日本語を学び、日本学の研究者を志している。混沌とした中にも整然とした秩序があり、あらゆる事柄の後ろには長い年月を経た物語がある日本という国の不可思議が、多くの人々を魅了し続けている。
With the blessings of ancient history, the cutting edge technology is the front runner. Even though there are Honne and Tatemae, (true feelings and public stance are distant), Japanese people are kind and hardworking in general, and we hate fighting and cherish peace. For those who find utopia in Japan, it is becoming like the final fortress.
いにしえの歴史を持ちつつも、最先端の技術力と共に先頭をひた走り、本音と建前はあれど日本人は全般的に親切で、働き者が多く、争いごとを好まず平和を尊ぶ。日本に理想郷を見ている人たちにとっては、この世界における最後の砦の様な存在にすらなって来ている。
I’m born and raised in Japan, 100% Japanese. What can I do to make a fruit of this project promoting Japanese culture in Japanese and English bilingual to establish a new genre of Japanology? Not only making descriptions of things historically, culturally, and socially based on the objective reality, but something more liberating and extending I want to initiate. Court Lady of 1,000 years ago Sei Shonagon wrote The Pillow Book and left essay culture heritage for us. And if I transform it into a modern version with plentiful photos, what can I create? I’ve been contemplating this motif for all these years. The big challenge is unfolding…
日本生まれ日本育ちの生粋の日本人である私が、日本文化を日本語と英語のバイリンガルで発信するというこの取り組みを、新しい日本学の一分野へと結実させる為には何が出来るか。歴史的文化的社会的な事柄の客観的な記述にはとどまらない、もっと自由闊達で、もっとふくよかに広がりのある、一千年前の宮廷女房の清少納言が残してくれた枕草子の随筆を、多くの写真も添えて現代版に書き換えたらどういうものが作れるか。そのことをここ何年も思考し続けている。大きな挑戦は、これからも続いてゆく。
