Not quite often, but once in a year or so, I come across a word “mahoroba” in Japanese. When search the word in a dictionary, it means “one of a kind place”. The ancient word of Japan dates back in the time of Manyo Shu; Japanese most ancient poetry written in 7th to 8th century. And the other day, I went to Yame, Fukuoka to attend a concert entitled “mahoroba”.
しばしば、ではないけれど一年に一度位の割合で、何かの拍子にふと触れることのある「まほろば」という言葉。辞書で調べると万葉の昔からある「まほら」という言葉の変形の一つで「すぐれた良い所」という意味らしい。先日、この「まほろば」と銘打ったコンサートを聴きに福岡の八女まで足を運んだ。
In the evening of November cold rain, the concert of “mahoroba”, by Remioromen vocalist Fujimaki Ryota and jazz pianist Kuwabara Ai was held. The venue was filled with joy of music and deep pleasure was sparkling with thousands of unseen sound particles. The atmosphere was so warm and dear, it was genuinely one of a kind place and time.
11月の冷たい雨の降る夕刻に、レミオロメンのボーカルの藤巻亮太さんと、ジャズピアニストの桑原あいさんが二人で創り出した「まほろば」は、音楽の喜びと奥深い愉しみが、幾千もの目には見えぬ音の粒となって、キラリキラリと暖かくまたたく、本当にすぐれた良い所と時間となっていた。
The meaning of a human body accumulating years of hard practice, and the musician expresses oneself with thoughts, prayers, and good intentions transforming into the art of music. I was so blessed to witness the precious sounds of music played and sung, unrepeatable miraculous moments. It was forbidden to appreciate live concerts for nearly 2 years due to COVID, and that made it special to thoroughly enjoy the music. I was able to be soaked in the melodies, so gracious and beautiful night indeed. To appreciate live music is one of the biggest joy in life.
人間の身体が長年に渡る練習を積み重ね、思索と祈りと思いの丈を音楽というものに昇華させて表現するということ。音楽が奏でられ歌いあげられるその場に居合わせて、その再現できない一回限りの奇跡の瞬間を、味わい噛みしめること。コロナ禍にあって二年近く禁じられていた、大いなる生きる歓びの一つである音楽を生で鑑賞するということの有り難みと、その素晴らしい恵みを全身に浴びた本当に美しい夜だった。
While listening to a song of Remioromen “May 9th” , tears came along reminiscing my late father now in heaven. When closing eyes, he’s smiling gently and slightly shyly. When I was crying, he used to say “That’s ok, that’s ok, Aya, you don’t have to cry.” The words still echoing in my ears.
レミオロメンの楽曲である「3月9日」を聴き、天国に昇っていった父のことを想い涙した。まぶたの裏でいつも優しく、少し照れたように笑う父。私が泣くと「よしよし、綾はなんも泣かんでいい。」と言ってくれる言葉が今も耳に響いてくる。
Yame, Fukuoka is famous for tea produce. Fujimaki Ryota talked about the excellent quality, and the jazz pianist Kuwabara Ai played a piece of improvisation inspired by the tea of Yame. Kuwabara said she ate Matcha green tea soft-served ice cream and she expressed the fine powders of tea leaves and the image of tea fields swaying in the breeze. It was the unrepeatable second art and I was mesmerized and captured by her talent as a pianist. I do wish to go to their concert again.
福岡の八女はお茶の名産地であり、そのお茶の味わいを藤巻亮太さんが語り、ジャズピアニストの桑原あいさんが、お茶というものからイメージを喚起された曲を即興で奏でてくれた。桑原さんが食べた抹茶ソフトクリームのお茶の粒の味わいや、茶畑が風にそよぐイメージを一つの音楽としてその場で弾いてくれた時間は、再現できない瞬間芸術の粋そのものであり、私は桑原あいさんに魅了されて、そのピアノの音色の虜になった。この二人のコンサートにまた行きたいと思う。
And I ponder over the word, “mahoroba; one of a kind place”. Each one of us all have ability to create this. You can express something and admire the beauty one another. Not only that, you can give the time as a precious gift to someone. You might be able to live along without art, but if there doesn’t exist art in your daily life, vigor to live through difficulties won’t spring up. Something genuinely beautiful embellishes hope of living to your heart gently.
そして「まほろば＝すぐれた良い所」という言葉について考える。私たちはみんな、この「まほろば」を作り出す力を持っている。何かを表現して、お互いにその良さを讃えあうこと。そしてその「まほろばの時間」を誰かに贈ることができるのだ。私たちは芸術がなくても生きて行けるかもしれないけれど、芸術が暮らしの中になければ、困難を生き抜く力が湧き上がってこない。優れて美しいものは、私たちに生きる希望をそっと心に添えてくれるのだ。
It is almost impossible to translate the mystic beauty of music into words. Even though, you are driven to make a record and leave the value for good after something utterly worthy touched your heart strings. It is nothing but the power of the beauty of art, and it has been passed on from generation to generation from the ancient times in the history of human beings.
音楽の持つ、その神秘的な美しさを言葉に置き換えるということは、ほとんど不可能だ。けれど真に良いものを聴いて心が触れられた後に、そのものの価値の高さを記録に留め、形にして残しておかなくてはと、私たちに駆り立てるものがある。それこそが芸術が持つ美という力の真髄であり、人類が太古の昔から脈々と受け継ぎ伝え続けて来たものなのだ。
In my opinion, art is an act of translation attaining some ideas personally from something. Literature, paintings and sculptures, music, architecture, dancing, acting, graphic art, manga, anime, movies, cooking, calligraphy, and hand crafts are all the shapes of translations, I believe. And the direction aiming to climb higher by expressing the translation that sincerely unique and no one can mimic is the power of art itself.
私は芸術というものは、あるものから得た着想を自己解釈して翻訳する行為だと思っている。文芸も、絵画や彫刻も、音楽も、建築も、舞踊も、演劇も、グラフィックアートも、漫画も、アニメも、映画も、料理も、書道も、手芸も、それらは全て一つの翻訳であると思うのだ。そして独自の人真似ではない翻訳表現を、より高みへと繋げてゆこうとする力こそが、芸術の志向性だと思っている。
And enriching our minds affluently by sharing art with others. Tried to verbalize the concepts, but to tell the truth, even small kids instinctively recognize the value of art that is “something enchanting and worthy”. I want to represent my gratitude that I could deeply appreciate the beauty from the bottom of my heart, and I keep praying for peaceful world.
そしてその芸術を人々と共有しあって、私たちの心を豊かにしてゆくこと。こうして言語化せずとも、実はそれは小さな子供も本能的に知っている「美しく良きもの」なのだ。この「美しく良きもの」を深く堪能できることを心から感謝して、平和を祈り続けてゆきたい。
Had Yame Matcha gateau chocolat, nearby the concert venue. The strong and fresh aroma of the green tea was fabulous.
コンサート会場の近くで頂いた八女茶のガトーショコラ。濃い新鮮な抹茶の風味が逸品でした。
