Colored foliage is pleasant to eyes. On a beautiful and nostalgic autumn day, I revisited Hiroshima Miyajima Itsukushima Shrine that once paid a visit for elementary school excursion. It was on weekday but there were lots of people since the island is a mecca for school trips. Filled with youthful energy of the students from elementary school to college were like young leaves thriving. In Japan it is said declining birthrate is serious, however I was glad to see that all these young generations are growing soundly.
紅葉が目を愉しませ郷愁を誘う、美しい秋の一日。小学校の修学旅行で訪れた広島の宮島、厳島神社を再訪しました。さすが日本の修学旅行のメッカだけあって、平日とは言えかなりの人出。小学生から大学生の若者たちで溢れ返り、若葉が芽吹いているかの様なエネルギーに満ちていました。日本は少子化が叫ばれて久しいものの、これだけ多くの若い世代が健やかに育っていると思うと嬉しくなります。

Miyajima Itsukushima is one of the 3 most scenic spots of Japan, and the whole island is amazingly photogenic from any angle filled with the beauty of traditional remains. Itsukushima island and Ishikushima Shirine are UNESCO World Cultural Heritage and it dates back in 593 when Emperor Suiko ordered to construct the shrine. In Heian era 1168, Tairano Kiyomori supported to build the whole shrine of nowadays combining the passageway floating in the ocean when the tide is high.
日本三景の一つである安芸の宮島・厳島は、島全体がどこを切り取っても由緒正しい風光明媚な被写体となります。厳島及び厳島神社はユネスコ世界文化遺産であり、その歴史は593年の推古天皇の命で創建されたという時代まで遡ります。平安時代の1168年（仁安3年）には平清盛が後援をして、今日の様な廻廊で結ばれた、満ち潮の時には海に浮かぶ社殿が造営されました。
Animism worship believing there are gods of 8 million in the nature of mountains and rivers is Japanese ancient belief, and the whole Itsukushima island is honored as a deity. The red painted main shrine and the floorboards are historically valuable, all of them are worth taking pictures. But it was a pity that the symbol of Miyajima red torii; the gateway to the shrine that is floating in the ocean was being remodeled.
山や川などの自然、八百万のものに神が宿るとする精霊信仰が日本古来の信仰であり、厳島は古くから島全体が御神体として崇められて来ました。朱塗りの本殿と板床は歴史的価値高く、写真に収めるべきものばかりです。ただ、海に浮かぶ宮島の象徴とでも言うべき鳥居は改装中で残念でした。
Munakata 3 female deities of Ichikishimahimenomikoto, Tagorihimenomikoto, and Tagitsuhimenomikoto are enshrined at Itsukushiama Shrine. Munakata Taisha Shrine is UNESCO World Cultural Heritage and the 3 goddesses are worshiped at about 6,200 shrines all across Japan. As recorded in the Japan most ancient history books of Kojiki and Nihon-Shoki, the Munakata 3 goddesses were backbone of the politics of the Emperors, it can be said they were the goddesses of protecting the nation strongly tied with the centralization of power. The history of Japan is inseparable with shrines and temples that are dotted all across the country.
厳島神社は、宗像三女神の市杵島姫命（いちきしまひめのみこと）、田心姫命（たごりひめのみこと）、湍津姫命（たぎつひめのみこと）を祀ってあります。ユネスコ世界文化遺産でもある宗像大社の三女神は、全国およそ6,200社の神社で祀られており、日本最古の歴史書の古事記や日本書紀に記されている様に、歴代天皇の政を助ける宗像三女神は、中央集権と強く結びついた国家神とでもいうべきものでありました。日本という国の成り立ちは、全国津々浦々にある神社仏閣とは切り離して考えることは出来ません。
Strolled around the island. Climbed up the two-storied-pagoda called Tahou-Tou (plentifully treasured pagoda). There was no tourists above and it was like an air-pocket. The autumn atmosphere was so dense and dear. Came across a traveller butterfly chestnut tiger butterfly, felt as if I found a good sign.
厳島の島内を歩き回りました。二重塔である多宝塔に登りましたが、ここだけは観光客が誰もおらず、小さな別天地の様で秋の情趣がより慕わしく感じられました。旅する蝶々アサギマダラが一頭飛んでいて、まるで吉兆を見つけたかの様で嬉しくなります。
But above all, Senjyoukaku that Toyotomi Hideyoshi built in 1587 to have 1,000 monks to read sutras to dedicate prayers together was astonishing. Once stepped in the magnificent and spectacular temple of Momoyama era style, the breathing of the history of Japan that is so vital and wild came up to me closely more than any temples and shrines that I’ve ever visited. Had an intuition that the souls and spirits of the Samurai warriors were still floating there. If you love visiting historical places, it’s a must to go visit. I guarantee that you will be greatly satisfied.
そして、豊臣秀吉が1587年に千部経（祈願のために千人の僧が一部づつ読む経）を読誦させるために建立した、千畳閣が何よりも圧巻でした。桃山式の豪壮な建築の内部に足を踏み入れて歩くと、これまでに訪れた如何なる神社仏閣よりも、日本の歴史の生々しく雄々しい息遣いが間近に迫り来て、戦国武将たちの魂がまだこの場所に漂っているのだと、直観させるものがあったのです。歴史探訪が好きな方は必ず訪れるべき場所だと、太鼓判を押したい。

Anything and everything in Itsukushima island is important cultural assets and it can be said as living samples of a history textbook. This time I was able to appreciate the history of Japan deeply that I was unable to understand at the time of elementary school excursion. I believe it’s lovely to age gracefully.
厳島はありとあらゆるものが重要文化財であり、日本の歴史の生きた教科書の見本市とでも言うべき島です。小学校の修学旅行では全く見えていなかったものを、今回は深く堪能できました。恵み深く年を重ねるのは、素敵なことだと私は思います。
