When you teach, your are taught. I’ve been teaching English for so many years and I always come back to this eternal truth. Teacher is not only an occupation that has wide knowledge, but teacher is taught a lot from someone s/he is teaching.
教えることは、教わること。長年英語の先生という仕事をして来て、この真理にいつも大きく頷きます。先生というのは、単にモノを知っているという職業ではなく、同時に教えている相手から多くのことを学ばされているのです。
when I was teaching English conversation to an elementary school kid and a junior high school kid, we talked about Japanese festivals. Then two of them taught me the history of Yamakasa that they learned at school. Yamakasa is UNESCO world heritage, an iconic summer fest of Hakata, Fukuoka in Kyushu island. The talk of the kids was intriguing, so I gave an assignment to make a research for Yamakasa in detial.
先日、小学生と中学生の子供たちに英会話を教えているとき、日本の祭りについての話になりました。すると、その二人が学校で習ったという山笠の歴史を教えてくれました。山笠とは、ユネスコ世界遺産でもある九州は博多の夏の風物詩です。二人の話がとても面白い話だったので、興味津々に聞き、宿題で山笠の歴史を詳しく調べて来るように言いました。
Junior high school girl did a great job summarizing history of Yamakasa. Then I translated into English and we practiced reading it. Now that kids learn Yamakasa in elementary school. I might have learned as well, but I don’t remember.
中学生の女の子は、すごく張りきって文章にまとめて来てくれたので、その文章を英語に置き換えて話すという授業をしました。今は小学校でも山笠のことを授業で習うとのこと。もしかしたら私も習ったのかもしれませんが、記憶からこぼれ落ちています。
The origin of Yamakasa dates back more than 770 years ago. In those days they had pandemic disease and many people lost their precious lives, and a monk of a temple started Yamakasa and dedicated prayers in order to ward off the pandemic. The girl taught me Yamakasa represents prayers for longevity and good health for people.
山笠の起源は、今から770年以上前に遡ります。疫病が蔓延し多くの人が尊い命を落とした中、あるお寺のお坊さんが山笠を始めて疫病退散を祈願したのが、その歴史の始まりとのこと。山笠は、人々の長寿と健康を祈念するものであることを教えてくれました。
And in October, I visited Kushida Shrine where Yamakasa is enshrined. Kushida Shrine is located in the middle of the metropolis of Hakata, at the end of Kawabata Arcade. It is widely famous for being Power Spot. The locals say “We have Yamakasa, it’s our Hakata!”. It shows the great pride for Yamakasa and it is rooted in Hakata people’s identity.
そして、10月にその山笠が奉納されている櫛田神社へ行って来ました。櫛田神社は博多の街のど真ん中、川端商店街のはじにあり、パワースポットとしても広く知られています。この土地の「山笠あるけん博多たい！」という言葉に象徴される通り、山笠は博多っ子の大きな誇りであり、心の拠り所でもあります。
“Warding off the pandemic”, it is the same as our prayer for COVID crisis.
「疫病退散」これはコロナ禍に大きく通ずる願いでもあります。

Lately, I have so many opportunities to be touched by children’s sparkling intelligence, their pure intellectual curiosity, and strong motivation to learn. I think it’s probably true that kids are much smarter than grownups. And I believe that it’s our grownups’ responsibility to make a society to nurture kids’ shining spirits protecting and loving them attentively.
近頃、子供の知性の煌めきや、純粋な好奇心や、学びたいとする意欲に感動することが本当に多いのです。大人よりも子供の方がずっと賢いというのは恐らく真実で、この子供達のまばゆい輝きを守って育て、大切に慈しんでゆく社会を作ってゆくのが、私達大人の責任であるのでしょう。
