“WABI SABI JAPANESE WISDOM FOR A PERFECTLY IMPERFECT LIFE” Beth Kempton

It’s mid August, I went for a walk after many days of torrential rain. Noticed plants and greenery of forests and mountains got rejuvenated. I love go walking under the dim sky after days of heavy rain. The long rain that came after consecutive days of scorching heat caused severe flooding in many areas, but at the same time, the rain is surely graceful. Then I realized that there is no more cicada buzzing noisily and there were many dead ones on the path. In stead, crickets started to chirp beautifully and slightly at night.

八月中旬、長雨が続いた後に散歩に出掛けると、草木が潤い山や森の緑が若さを取り戻しているのが分かる。激しい雨が幾日も続いた後、まだ薄曇りの日差しの中を歩くのが好きだ。灼熱の容赦ないジリジリと焦がす様な日照りの後の長雨は、各地で水害をもたらしたけれど、それでもやはり同時に恵みの雨であるのだと思う。ふと気付くと、あれほどうるさく鳴き続けていた蝉の声はもう聞こえなくなって、散歩道には蝉の亡骸がいくつも転がっていた。その代わりに夜になると、チリリリリと鈴虫が微かな声で美しい音色を奏で出した。

COVID crisis is getting even more serious and I can’t see people whom I love. I want to laugh out loud joyously with my dear friends and family without wearing a mask, though. As is written in the Old Testament, at the Time of the End pestilence go pandemic, the love of most grow cold, and people get corrupted. However, there were some persons like Noah who built an ark and was able to reach out new world.

コロナ禍は深刻さを増し続け、会いたい人達にも会えない。マスクを外して大好きな人達と一緒に笑い合いたいけれど、それも叶わない。旧約聖書にあるように、終わりの時代には疫病が蔓延し、人々の愛は冷たくなり、人間は堕落してゆくのかもしれない。けれどノアの様に箱舟を作り、新しい世界へ到達できた人達もいたのだと考えたりもする。

My theme is to promote the charm of Japanese culture that you find in daily life in English and Japanese. I endeavor to establish a new genre of Japanology, and I study hard day and night. For example, reading books featuring Japan is an important part of the research. Books featuring Japanese culture written by Japanese that are well surveyed are very interesting, but also eyes from outside broaden my point of view and give me objectivity since I incline to be narrow sighted from time to time.

私のテーマは、日々の暮らしの中で見つける日本文化の魅力を、英語と日本語で発信すること。日本学の新しい分野を確立して行きたいと、自分なりに日々研究を続けている。具体的言うと、日本をテーマにした本を読むことは大切な勉強の一部だ。日本人が日本文化について書いたものも、綿密に調査をして書き上げられたものは奥深くてとても面白いけれど、外からの視点は、近視眼的になりそうな自分の視座に客観性と幅を与えてくれる。

Books written by Japanophiles from abroad are filled with pure and genuine longing. The exciting process of learning new culture and language is like falling in love since opening up a door to different culture is so mesmerizing and enchanting. The sheer energy is overflowing between the lines. It teaches me that even if you are seeing the same object, lighting angle can make the impression completely different.

日本びいきの外国人が書いた本は、日本に対する純粋な憧れと思慕の念が詰まっていて、新しい文化や言語を学んで体得してゆく過程にある喜びや、異文化に対するトキメキという恋心にも似た胸の高鳴りが行間に溢れていて、同じものを見ていても、光の当て方でその像は異なる印象をもたらすのだ、と言うことを教えてくれる。

Japanese tend to speak ill of Japan, however the sight form outside teaches us the remarkable values that Japan nurtured are worth admiring; the spirit of WABI SABI that find beauty in imperfection, loyalty of BUSHIDO, life philosophy that each one of has as IKIGAI, ZEN spirit that accept things calmly as they are, KAIZEN mentality that keep progressing piling up small things, and ideal and exemplary food culture.

日本人はとかく日本のことを悪く言いがちだけれど、不完全さの中にある美を見出す侘び寂びの精神や、忠を尽くす武士道や、一人一人が持つ人生哲学でもある生き甲斐や、あるがままの姿を静かに受け入れる禅の心や、少しずつ進歩を重ねて大きな結果を導き出す改善の精神や、理想的で模範的な食文化など、日本が育んで来た文化が持つ価値の高さを、外からの視点は教えてくれる。

Things are not “ordinary and boring, repeating the same things again and again”. But the recognition that the world becomes brighter depending on the lighting angle, even though you are at the same place seeing the same thing makes your wings of imagination spread wider. They will lead us from “now here” to “far away time zone”.

「当たり前過ぎて、退屈で、うんざりするような繰り返しの日々」ではなく、同じ場所に居ても、同じものを見ていても、光の当て方で世界は輝きを増すのだと言う気づきは、私達の想像力の翼を大きく広げさせ、「今ここ」から「遠いかなたの時間軸」へ私達を連れ出してくれる。

COVID crisis might be a huge crisis for human existence. But history repeats itself and this COVID can become the past that “the critical situation we once experienced”. If we can weave some hope, it’s only possible by creating “something truly beautiful” using our hands diligently. Now is the time not to lament despair, but to search for light of hope.

コロナ禍は本当に人類存亡の危機であるのかもしれない。けれど歴史は繰り返すように、このコロナ禍も「以前経験した危機的状況」という過去になってゆくのかもしれない。私達に何か希望が紡げるのだとすれば、それは自分達の手を一生懸命に使って「美しい何か」を作り上げることによってのみ可能なのではないか。今こそ、絶望を嘆く時ではなく、希望の光を追い求める時だ。

Goethe wrote “a person who doesn’t know a foreign language doesn’t know his native language either”. As a starter, why don’t you start learning a foreign language? I always believe a foreign language works as a mirror to reflect upon your native language and your native culture, that gives you a viewpoint to become sensitive to beauty of small details. When you are unable to go out to encounter something new to the world, look back the things that is “here now”. Now is the best timing to cherish and embrace the beauty thoroughly.

ゲーテは「外国語を知らない人は、自国語をも知らない」と書いたが、まず手始めに外国語を勉強するのはどうだろう。外国語は鏡となって自国語と自国の文化を映し出し、細部に宿るものの美に敏感になれる着眼点を与えてくれると、私は常々思っている。新しい何かに出会いに世界へ出掛けることが叶わない時は「今、この場所にあるもの」を見つめ直して、その愛おしさを心ゆくまで堪能する、またとない機会になる。
