In recent times, Japanese literature especially women literature is translated into multiple languages frequently and the foreign market is expanding. Currently, “Convenience Store Woman” written by Sayaka Murata made a great impact and people abroad come to recognize Japanese literature is quirky in some way, according to a newspaper.
現在、日本文学、特に女流作家の作品の多言語翻訳が進み、海外市場が広がってきているそうだ。最近では村田沙耶香の「コンビニ人間」の反響が大きく、日本文学は風変わりなものという受け止められ方をしていると新聞で読んだ。
I want to accept the reputation positively. Being quirky is a talent. It means being different and it’s nothing but a gift from God. Your uniqueness is your biggest charm. I want to represent honor to gifted Japanese female novelists who attained the world class reputation.
風変わり、変わり種、という見られ方に私はむしろ好意を持ちたい。大多数とは一線を画す力、つまりはそれが才能という天からの贈り物だからだ。人とは違うあなたの独自性こそがあなたの個性であり、最大の魅力ですよ、と。そう世界的に評価を得た日本の女流作家達に敬意を表したい。
On the other hand, I’m not a novelist so that I don’t possess techniques of a storyteller. I don’t know how to deepen a story with dialogues between characters, nor how to detail each personalities, nor how to interact those characters. This blog is more of an essay so that I pile up each article one by one.

The main theme of this blog is to promote the charm of Japan to the world. But it would be quite boring if I only showcase and explain the culture, history, foods, technology and such. If it were like that, it will turn out to be like a guidebook.

On each article, I pick up a certain theme and try to tell a story on the back and add up my own thoughts as a Japanese. And here is a secret that I don’t just type on PC: I jot down brainstorming on a notepad first then rewrite the content many times.
毎回何かの事柄を取り上げて、その背景やそれにまつわる物語を解説し、私の考えを基軸として、日本の思いを絡めて書いている。そして、思いつくままパソコンに入力するのではなく、一記事ごとにノートのネタ書きをして推敲を加えている。
In Japan, there was no such typewriter culture. Things have changed, but traditionally Japanese writers write on a manuscript paper character by character that is divided into small squares. They fill in each square and reread many times, adding up and modifying sentences. The act of writing makes each style and it enables readers to have deep satisfaction, I suppose.
日本には元々タイプライター文化はなく、原稿用紙の升目を一文字一文字埋めて、作家たちは書きあがった原稿を何度も読み返して加筆修正を施し、文章を練り上げていた。それが厚みのある文体となって、読み手に深い満足を与えていたのだと、そう推察している。
On this blog, I think and write in Japanese first then translate it into English. Sometimes there is slight difference in each language. But that is nothing but difference of languages, difference of the mindset .
このブログはまず日本語ありきで、その日本語に英訳をつけるという手順で進めている。日本語表現と英文では多少ニュアンスの異なることを書いているが、それこそが言語の違いで、日本語で考える時と英語で考える時の思考のズレとも言えるかもしれない。
When writing, I have this feeling: weaving up a small square cloth with embroidery and dying and such. And design the layout, combination, structure, and stitching up a big tapestry. I endeavor myself with perseverance to create the best of the bests.
このブログを書いている感覚は、例えると小さな四角の布を刺繍したり染めたりして一つずつ織り上げ、それらの配置を設計して、もっとも美しくなるような組み合わせ方に心を砕き、一つの大きな作品に仕上げてゆくような感じだ。
I yielded this mechanism by myself, but I believe professional novelists and writers are hiding their secret recipes, and they sprinkle their one and only viewpoint and aesthetics on each work and create their world. Of course self-control is given tactfully and strategically.
私はこのやり方を自分で編み出したけれど、きっと作家や著述家の人たちは言葉の職人として、秘伝のタレのようなものをそれぞれに隠し持ち、独自の視点と美学を至上のスパイスとしてふりかけて、作品を創り上げているのだろう。そして勿論、適宜抑制を効かせつつ。
By having those procedures, works of art are given birth. And you can sense some kind of quirkiness and it attracts readers inevitably. Hence the quirkiness is genuine talent and it’s something irreplaceable. It is a lifeline for creators.
そうやって出来上がった作品の一つ一つには、どこかしら風変わりな印象があり、それが読者を惹きつけてやまない。つまりはその風変わりさこそが置き換えのきかない才能であり、モノを作る者にとっての生命線なのだ。
From the beginning, giving a stage effect for genuine talent is pointless. I hope that Japanese literature will get bigger number of readers abroad. And I anticipate Japanese distinctive charm and exquisiteness that has so many different facets would reach out more deeply and widely.
人とは違う個性や魅力とは、そもそも計算して演出できるものではない。日本文学がこれからも海外で広く読まれてゆくように、心から願っている。日本の多面的でいとをかしき魅力が、もっともっと広く深く伝わって行きますように。
