November 16 was the Icelandic Day, and I attended an online seminar held by Embassy of Iceland in Japan. This is yearly annual event and I attended for the 3rd time. Iceland is dear and special country for me. I’ve been personally having Japan Iceland friendship exchange since autumn of 1997.

11月16日はアイスランド語の日。在日本アイスランド大使館主催のオンラインセミナーに参加した。これは毎年恒例のイベントで、今回で三回目の参加となった。アイスランドは私にとって親愛なる特別な国だ。個人的にやっている日本アイスランド親善友好活動歴は、1997年の秋にまで遡る。

It was Sunday, so I commemorated the day for Icelandic culture and immersed myself in the world. Reading back Iceland related books that I’ve been collecting for decades. Photo book, manga, guidebook, magazine, academic book, picture book, and reference books when I helped for research and translation, cultural book, and etc. And I looked back photos that I took when visiting there for lecture trip in 2019. I was reminiscing my dear Iceland. And music on the back was CDs that I got as Christmas present from Icelandic friend and I purchased in local record shop in Iceland.

この日は日曜日だったので、アイスランド語の日に敬意を表しアイスランド文化に浸る日にして、長年集めてきたアイスランド関係の書籍を読み返していた。写真集、マンガ、ガイドブック、雑誌、学術書、絵本、調査と翻訳のお手伝いをした際の参考文献、文化紹介の本、などなど。そして2019年に講演旅行で訪れた際の写真も見返し、アイスランドの思い出に浸る。BGM はアイスランドの友が送ってくれた CD と現地のレコードショップで買った CD だ。

And I learned Icelandic with a textbook for beginner. However, the language is severely difficult that I just repeated words spoken by Icelanders in the CD while reading the textbook. By having such rejoicing time, I was preparing for the Icelandic seminar at night.

そして初学者向けの語学書 『ニューエクスプレス　アイスランド語』でアイスランド語を勉強する。と言っても激ムズ言語なので、CD の音声をテキストを見ながら繰り返すだけ。そうやって夜のアイスランド語セミナーに備えた。

By the way, the cover picture Lopapeysa was a Christmas present form Icelandic friend that her grandmother knitted. For her family, grandmother’s Lopapeysa is like a family treasure. Lopapeysa is a sweater knit with Iceland indigenous long wool sheep yarn, and it is so warm. Each time I put on, I feel happiness snuggling in the warmth. It is my treasure as well. And I bought the Troll Santa at Keflavik airport.

因みにカバー写真のロパペイサは、アイスランドの友がプレゼントしてくれた、彼女のおばあちゃんが手編みしたもの。彼女の家族にとっておばあちゃん作のロパペイサは家宝だそう。ロパペイサとは毛足の長いアイスランドの羊の毛糸で編んだセーターやカーデガンで、とっても温かい。着るたびにヌクヌクと幸せな気持ちになれる私の宝物だ。トロルのサンタはケプラヴィーグ空港で買った。

Lecturers of the seminar were young scholars. One is studying in Iceland specializing in Icelandic and work as a translator and introducing picture books of Iceland to Japan, and others are researchers teaching in university and language school in Japan.

セミナーの登壇者の方々は若き学者の方たちで、アイスランドに留学されてアイスランド語を専門的に学ばれ、現在は翻訳家としてアイスランドの絵本を日本に紹介されている方や、研究者として大学や語学学校でアイスランド語を教えている方たちだった。

Each one of them shared how they encountered with Iceland, and why they came to specialize in minor language that the speakers are solely 400,000 people. They shared the insanely difficult conjugations and pronunciation. They said they were crying and studying with overwhelming laboriousness. And the story was so captivating for me. One studied in Iceland as a high school exchange student, and one majored in Swedish first then got interested in Icelandic, and the way of learning is touching heart strings of mine as a language geek.

それぞれの方がどうしてアイスランドと出会ったか、40万人ほどしか話者がいない少数言語を専門とするようになったか、アイスランドの格変化や発音の難しさ、泣きながら勉強していたと言う話に惹きつけられる。高校生の頃に留学した先生や、スウェーデン語を専攻していたことからアイスランド語に興味を持った先生や、その勉強方法が同じく語学オタクの私の心に刺さる。

There is a certain place that only who strived to study a foreign language while crying can reach out. As for me, I was crying and studying Bahasa Malaysia, aka Malaysian that was my major in freshman of university. And memories of excruciating pains and utmost pleasure of the marbled embroidery was coming back with slight pains and sweet memories.

泣きながら未知の語学を勉強したことがある人にしか、見えない景色と到達できない場所がある。私自身、大学一年生の頃に専攻言語のマレーシア語を泣きながら勉強していたので、あの壮絶な苦しみと至上の喜びのまだら模様が、微かな痛みと甘い思い出と共に蘇ってくる時間だった。

And I agree that there is another world where you can experience in depth that Icelandic language allow you to come in, what English can’t bring in. When I had Japanese English Wasei-eigo lecture in University of Iceland in 2019, I said my hobby is learning language, a student asked me how about Icelandic. And I said “My name is Aya, I’m Japanese. Welcome to Iceland.” in Icelandic that I memorized beforehand. They all smiled, and we created intimate atmosphere. Then I was able to give a good lecture.

そして、英語を使っているだけでは見えない、アイスランド語が出来るからこそ入って行ける世界があると言う話は本当だと思う。2019年にアイスランド大学で和製英語の講義をした時、語学学習が趣味ですと言うと学生から「アイスランド語は？」と聞かれ、覚えて行った言葉「私の名前は綾です。日本人です。アイスランドへようこそ。」をアイスランド語で言うと、みなさん笑顔になって喜んでもらえ親密度がぐんと上がり、良い講義ができた。

Even though you are able to comprehend several languages, social benefit is not outstanding. Nevertheless, there exists genuine intellectual pleasure and heart to heart communication. I like international exchange, and I like the time of sparkles that uniting our hearts. It is the moment of our life shines through. Other than my speciality, I tried to learn Indonesian, Korean, French, German, Chinese, Dutch, and Icelandic.

多言語が出来ても社会的に得することはほとんどない。けれど多言語が出来るからこその純粋なる知的喜びと心の交流がある。国際交流が好き、心と心が結びついて笑顔が生まれる瞬間が好き。それは紛れもない人生がきらりと輝く瞬間だ。これまでに専門以外で私が手を出した言語は、インドネシア語、韓国語、フランス語、ドイツ語、中国語、オランダ語、そしてアイスランド語だ。

All among them, Icelandic is strikingly strenuous. So it is impossible to become fluent in Icelandic by just having self-taught. Nonetheless, I like listening to Icelandic as sounds. So I’ll keep listening to Icelandic music from time to time.

その中でもアイスランド語は飛び抜けて難度が高い。だから私が独学だけでアイスランド語を流暢に話せるようになることはないけれど、ただ音として聞くアイスランド語が好きなので、アイスランドの音楽はこれからも時々聴いてゆく。

Icelandic music has one and only beautiful lyricism that is created in a warm room looking outside landscape of tranquility, snowing ceaselessly while pondering deeply in a country of ice. Introverted contemplation of depth and sensing temperature and visual image are blooming in higher level of musical expressions. The genuine purity of seeking for art is one of the reasons why I keep embracing Iceland as my dear special country.

氷の国の雪が静かにしんしんと降り続ける外の風景をみながら、温かい部屋の中で物思いに耽って作られた音楽という抒情性があって、それは詩的で美しいのだ。内向的に深度を掘り下げて思考したものや、体感している温度や視覚が捉えているイメージを独自の音楽表現にまで高めている、そのアイスランドの持つ芸術探求の営みの純度の高さが、きっと私がアイスランドを親愛なる特別な国だと思い続けている理由の一つでもあると思う。

And I was jotting down ideas on a notebook for the blog at the night of Sunday. It turned out to be a quiet and fulfilling day that I soaked in various Icelandic culture.

こうして様々なアイスランド文化に浸った日曜日の夜に、この記事のネタ書きをノートにまとめていた。この日は静かに満ち足りた一日となった。
