Today, I’d like to write about Osaka Kansai Expo initiating this spring that was featured in the Cabinet Office Morning Study Group in February. As a domestic issue, Expo is very controversial subject argued about the enormous amount of tax usage, the aftermath revenue, and the burden to the environment. On the other hand, since Expo was first held in Paris in 1798 after the French Revolution, it has been the cutting edge base station that has been functioning as an opportunity to have international cultural exchange where each country proudly sings along the uniqueness and supremacy of each culture & civilization mesmerizingly and eloquently.
二月に参加した内閣府朝活勉強会で取り上げられていた、この春から始まる大阪・関西万博について。日本国内では万博開催について、巨額の税金の使い道やその後処理や環境への負荷等々の問題が多く指摘されており、開催直前の現在も賛否両論分かれています。しかしながら一方で、フランス革命後の1798年にパリ万博が開かれて以来、歴史的に見た万国博覧会というものは、世界中の国々がそれぞれの文化文明の独自性と至大なる魅力を高らかに歌い上げる場所として、常に国際文化交流の最先端基地局であり続けました。
It is the exhibition of mystical kingdoms where you can learn unknown culture having a small journey filled with wonder. It is so irresistible and appealing. Then we went to the pre Expo Saudi Arabia fair that is having Japan tour before the opening. Given a passport to enjoy stamp rally, and bon voyage to small Saudi trip! In the past, it was unable to go visit Saudi Arabia for the purpose of sightseeing, however currently the policy changed and it was shifted to become a country of tourism. I’ve been interested in Islam art and Islam culture since entering university at the age of 18. My heart was beating with excitement.
未知の文化に触れ、知らない国々を気軽に旅するかの様に楽しむ悦楽の不思議王国博覧展。その芳しさに惹かれ逆らいきれずに、万博を前に全国を周回している『＃意外と身近なサウジ』展へ行って参りました。スタンプラリーを楽しめるパスポートを貰い、いざサウジ小旅行へ出発。以前は観光目的で訪れることは出来なかったサウジアラビア王国ですが、現在は方針が変わり、観光立国へと大きく舵を切りました。大学入学の十八歳の頃より、イスラム美術やイスラム文化に興味津々な私は、その深淵なるベールの向こう側の世界を知りたくて興奮を抑えきれません。
Firstly, I stepped in to a tent where you can enjoy Virtual Reality, adjusting the headset and experienced VR. It was my very first experience. As if flying on a drone and looking down Saudi from the sky and felt as if I was actually there, shocking 3D experience. I couldn’t help but shouting “WOW!!! It’s flying! Fantastic! So full of nature! Oh the guy is planting a coffee tree! Men are drinking coffee!” I was overly excited and so loud.
まず初めにヴァーチャルリアリティが楽しめるテントに入り、機械を頭に装着してサウジアラビアを仮想体験しました。VRは初体験です。ドローンに乗って空中からサウジを見下ろし、その場に実際に自分がいるような三次元空間に「うわ、すごい！これ飛んどるバイ！うお！めっちゃすごいバイ！結構自然豊かや！お〜コーヒーの木を植えよるんやね！おじさん達がコーヒー飲みよるよ！」と興奮のあまり大層やかましい私。
Through this VR tour, the image of Saudi that was completely unknown was coming to get closer. Saudi is the country of oil, filled with skyscrapers, huge sum of money circulating, lively bazar, and beautiful Islam art. My knowledge was that limited and scarce. But gradually it is coming to unveil the mysterious curtain and show me their features.
この体験により、全くの未知の世界であったサウジというものの像が、少しだけ見えて来ました。サウジと言えば石油の国で、高層ビルが乱立して大金が巡っている場所であり、活気あるバザールがあり、美しいイスラム美術がある位しかイメージが湧かなかったものが、ちょっとずつ具体的な表情を見せながら姿を現して来ます。
Went into the culinary culture booth. It was showcasing various kinds of spices and I was given a traditional cookie using those spices. But the flavor was too strong and unfamiliar for me, not my cup of tea.
食の体験ブースへ入りました。様々な香辛料があり、その香辛料を配合して作られた伝統菓子を一つ頂きました。しかし香りのクセが強く、四方から刺激が押し寄せる感があり、私の口には合いませんでした。
When visited the booth second time, they were baking mini pancakes. It was caramel and maple syrup flavor and so tasty. Saying we should have asked to give us second helpings.
二度目に訪れた時は、小さなパンケーキが焼かれていました。こちらはキャラメル味とメイプルシロップ味が混じっていて、かなり美味しかった。もう一個貰いに行けば良かったね、などと言い合いつつ。
I talked with a young lady who spoke excellent Japanese and took a picture together. She was so bright, tender, and beautiful. It was nice to see her working nimbly. I shared my university memories with her. Recalling the days that I met friends in Tokyo from all over the world. Felt as if I came across my long-lost friend.
日本語が堪能なお姉さんとお話をして、一緒に記念撮影させてもらいました。聡明で優しく美しく、シャキシャキと機敏に働かれる姿はとても素敵です。大学生の頃の話をして、私もその頃に出会った世界中から東京へ集っていた友たちとの日々を思い出し、懐かしい友に再会した様な気持ちに。
Next is experiencing Arabia Coffee. I had traditional Saudi Coffee, called Qahwa that is served to show hospitality loved by the locals. It was far from my image of coffee, rather like medical herbal tea simmered so long. Drinking Qahwa and munching on dates of dried fruit, the combination is superb.
その次はアラビア珈琲体験です。現地の方がよく飲まれているという、おもてなしの際に出される伝統的なカフワなるサウジ珈琲を頂いてみました。珈琲というよりも、薬草を煮詰めた煮汁の様な味で、デーツという干したナツメヤシの実と一緒に頂いていると、だんだん癖になってきます。
And time to become a queen. The Arabian Nights, Scheherazade the storyteller of One Thousand and One Nights was wearing this in the ancient palace?
そしてお次はお妃様体験です。アラビアンナイト、千一夜物語の夜伽をしたシェヘラザード王妃は、古い宮中ではこんなお召し物を纏っていたのでしょうか。
Went in a booth comparing life of Saudi and Japan. They compared textile weaved by Beduin ladies and Ohshima Tsumugi of Amami Ohshima, spectacular land view of Al Balad and Shirakawago in Gifu, formal attire of men Bisht and Montsuki Hakama, staple food rice recipe of Madini and Takikomi Gohan, flower oil of Rose Oil and Tsubaki Oil, nutritious sweets of Dates and Hoshigaki (dried persimmon), welcome drink of Saudi Coffee Qahwa served in Dallah and green tea served in Kyusu, traditional string instrument of Oud and Shamisen. Each one of the items were displaced and I picked up Saudi long thin rice. I’m a lifetime student of Comparative Culture, and it was indeed a dream wonderland.
サウジと日本の暮らしを比較しているブースでは、遊牧民の女性達が織るアル・サドゥと奄美大島の大島紬が比較され、世界に誇る景観ではアル・バラドと岐阜の白川郷が比較され、男性の正装ではビスートと紋付袴が比較され、両国の主食のお米については国民食のマディニと炊き込みご飯が比較され、花から採れたオイルではローズオイルと椿油が比較され、栄養豊かなスイーツではデーツ（ナツメヤシ）と干し柿が比較され、ウェルカムドリンクでは、サウジ珈琲と言われるカフワが入れられるダッラという入れ物とお茶を出される急須が比較され、伝統的な弦楽器ではウードと三味線が比較されていました。それぞれに現物の展示もあり、サウジの長細いお米を指でつまんでみたり。比較文化を終生の習いとする者には、まさに夢の場所です。
Sat and relax at an island space, the space is often seen in a movie taken in Arab. And watching a big screen was interesting as well. Neymar once in Saudi soccer league and Cristiano Ronaldo were talking, the wild nature of ocean and mountains, cutting edge lifestyle, and traditional culture were introduced. It is undoubted that every single nation is pregnant with distortions, unfairness, malady, and serious darkness. Even though, the spirit of Expo highlighting something glittering is having a proud look. It was the day of festivity, so I was having a ball.
アラブを舞台にした映画などでよく見る、まったりと脚を投げ出せるしつらえに座って、大画面の映像を見るのも面白かった。サウジのサッカーリーグにいたネイマールやクリスチャーノ・ロナウドの語りや、海や山の大自然の様子や、最先端の暮らしや、伝統文化の紹介が流れて来ます。勿論世界中どこの国にも、ひずみゆがみ病みと深刻な闇はつきものですが、それでもやはり煌びやかなところを前面に打ち出してくる万博精神は、晴れの日の誇らしげな表情をしていて、やっぱりお祭りですから楽しくて仕方ありません。
And here is the climax of the day, live stage of the traditional stringed instrument. Oud the origin of the guitar was played nostalgic tunes, filled with lonesomeness, having warmth and reminiscence. I wanted to listen to it for good.
そして本日一番楽しみにしていた、伝統管弦楽の生演奏。ギターの起源と言われる、ウードという伝統楽器の演奏は、懐かしさと寂しさと温かさと哀愁を誘います。いつまでも聴いていたいと思わせるものがある。
And ensemble with Japanese traditional woodwind instrument, Sho that was introduced to Japan from China in the 8th century. The melody of Arabia and Japan harmonized and appeared enchanting landscape that can’t be seen yet sensed. The affluent richness of music wraps around our body and soul.
そして奈良時代に中国より伝来した、日本の雅楽の木管楽器である笙との合奏。アラビアの音色と和の音色が絡まり合い、その空間に見えないけれども手触りを持って感じられる美しい景色が立ち現れ、音楽というものの豊かさに心と体が包まれ満たされてゆきます。
Since opening the country in 1853, Japan has been introducing Japanese culture all over the world. Ministry of Foreign Affairs is the forefront and throwing traditional culture experiencing exhibitions such as Judo, Sumo, Kendama, Origami, Calligraphy, Ikebana, Tea ceremony, and Sushi cuisine. And Anime Manga Cosplay Festa and Sakura festival that presented Sakura all over the world is blooming in spring. Japanese culture is feverishly loved, studied, and practiced. If international cultural exchange become more active all over the world, people come to know one another, and friendship called mutual understanding will be born, then peace progress and wars decrease. I’ve been believing so since very young.
1853年の開国以来、日本も日本文化を世界各地で紹介して来ました。今も外務省が中心となって、柔道、相撲、けん玉、折り紙、書道、生花、茶道、寿司の試食などの伝統文化の体験型展覧会や、アニメ漫画展やアニメコスプレ大会や、世界中に寄贈した桜が咲く季節には桜祭りなどが開催されており、日本文化は世界中で熱烈に愛され、学ばれ、実践されています。お互いがお互いの背景や歴史を知るための国際文化交流がもっと世界各地で盛んになれば、相互理解という名の友情が生まれ、平和が進み、戦争は減ってゆくと私はずっと信じ続けています。
