Attended The Cabinet Office morning study group today also. It was about ‘Traveling and Architecture’ lectured by a lady who majored in Architecture in university currently working in real estate industry. She shared a way of savoring trips focusing on architecture. Firstly, she gave a question “what is common in Sweden Stockholm, Portugal Port, and Croatia Dubrovnik ?’ The answer was Ghibli movie ‘Kiki’s Delivery Service’, it is believed the movie was created inspired by these cities. The lecturer shared some trivia of architecture and giving intellectual stimulations, and deeper and deeper she dug on.
内閣府の朝活勉強会に今朝も参加した。本日は「旅×建築」と題して、建築を大学時代に専攻し現在は不動産業に携わる方が登壇者で、旅行をする時の建築に焦点を当てた楽しみ方を話されていた。スウェーデンのストックホルム、ポルトガルのポルト、クロアチアのドブロブニクの共通点は何でしょう？がまず最初の問いかけで、答えはジブリ映画の『魔女の宅急便』の舞台のモデルではと言われる土地というもの。そこから話を建築の豆知識も織り込みつつ、参加者の知的好奇心をくすぐりつつ掘り下げて行かれた。
And I was intrigued by a term that she rephrased ‘deterioration over time’ as ‘aged beauty’. Searching on the net, I found this way of phrasing something aged and rusty as worthy and more valuable adding up positive meaning and affection in real estate industry.
その中で話されていた「経年変化」或いは「経年劣化」を「経年優化」と言い換える言葉に私は強く反応した。調べてみると不動産業では、年を経て古くなったものを愛着を込めてより価値あるものとする意味付けをして、この視点を提唱しているそうだ。
So and so, I’d like to write about ‘aged beauty’ and why we are attracted inevitably to the state. Why we find the visibility of accumulated time as sheerly one of a kind? Why we are mystified by those texture, why we regard something aged as irresistibly captivating?
という訳で、今回のテーマは「経年優化」にどうして私達は萌えるのかについて書きたい。そして人はその年月を経て、少しずつ折り重なり積み上げられた時間というものが目で見える風合いに、どうして抗いようもなく魅せられるのかを考えてみたい。
However, today I don’t feature historical architecture. I want to contemplate about ‘aged beauty’ in our daily lives. I am personally fond of things over 30 years old, so I’d like to introduce apartments, housings, shops in our everyday world. Here I share pictures cutting out those moments as ‘cool!’.
しかし、今回は歴史的建造物には敢えて重心を置かず、普通の人々の暮らしの中での「経年優化」を考察する。私は三十年以上たったものが特にイイ！と思うので、まずは当たり前の様に街中に佇んでいるアパートや家屋やお店を見て、イイ！と思った瞬間を切り取ってきた写真を紹介したい。

Construction materials are concrete, mortar, bricks, tin, glass, or sash. These combined materials go through long period of time suffered by all sorts of weather conditions. The aftermath shabby texture is beautified, garmenting zero plannings and intentions.
建築資材は木材でも、コンクリートでも、モルタルでも、煉瓦でも、トタンでも、ガラスでも、サッシでも、それぞれが風雪に耐えて長い時間をくぐって滲み出してくる味というものは、計画性や意図性がないからこそ生まれる美を宿している。
The reason why people recognize them as beauty is solely depending on the accumulated time. Scorching sunshine, tender sunlight, torrential rain, misty rain, April rain, humidity of high and low, typhoon, gentle breeze, gust of wind, piled up snow, sleets and hails. As a result of time passing through, aged architecture emerges. Time falls on all creature great and small, all figures existing in the world. Trace of rain, smoky stained surface. Having no scars is not valuable, having pains within yet standing nonchalantly is the reason why we are attracted. Historical values or fame are meaningless in the irreplaceable preciousness.
それらを美なるものと人の心が認識する様になる理由は、ただの純然とした時間性だけだ。強い日照り、柔らかい日差し、豪雨、霧雨、五月雨、湿度の高低、暴風雨、そよ風、つむじ風、積雪、みぞれ、ひょう。時というものが全ての生きとし生けるもの、この世に形として存在するものに燦々と降り注いだ結果として現れる古い建築物。雨筋の痕跡、煤けて汚れてくる表面。傷がないのが良いのではなく、その痛みを内に抱えつつも、泰然と立っている姿が私たちの琴線に触れるのだ。歴史的価値があるとか、有名であるとか、そんなものでは測れない存在の掛け替えのなさがある。
And same as our contemporaries, I take pictures with smartphone whenever I come across ‘cool!’ moment in Japan or abroad and I record them. And looking back those pictures, I come to see my likes and why I responded. So when you walk around in Japan or abroad, you ought to take pictures without hesitations when you find ‘aged beauty’. I use them for blog articles, and smartphone pictures are turning to be your special memory file.
そして多くの同時代の人々と同じく、私も海外でも日本でも、イイ！と思った瞬間を逃さずにスマホの写真を撮って記録に残すようにしている。そして、どうして自分の中のイイ！という感覚が反応したのか、後から撮り溜めてきた写真を見返すと、自分の好みの傾向が見えてくる。日本や海外を歩く時、「経年優化」したものを見つけたならば、迷わずシャッターを切っておいた方がいい。私はブログのネタにしているし、スマホの写真群は自分だけの特別な思い出ファイルにもなってゆく。
And it is utterly enchanting and fun editing those inspiration then transforming into an article. It is like cooking a good cuisine finding a theme, it is joyful intellectual pleasure.
そしてその撮り溜めた写真を自分なりの切り口を見つけて、あるテーマを一つに絞って料理をするように編集するのは、これまた楽しい知的時間でもある。
