＜Made a Haiku; Red small fruits Ringing Charmingly/ 一句捻りました、モチノキの赤い実の鳴り愛でたけれ＞
For the Cabinet Office Morning Study Group of the first time of the year, I online-lectured ‘Commemorating New Year with The Pillow Book’. The Cabinet Office is equivalent to the court of Heian Era where the politics was conducted. Therefore, it was so joyous and enchanting that I learned and laughed lightheartedly with noble men and gentlewomen of the office celebrating New Year. This study group is held every week, and it is my favorite place.
新春初の内閣府有志職員朝活勉強会（オンライン）にて、『枕草子で新年を寿ぐ』と題して登壇させて頂きました。現代の内閣府とは平安時代では政が行われた宮中ということになるので、そこで働く殿上人や女房の皆さんと共に学び、一緒にかろらかに笑い合うのは、年の始まりを祝う、いとをかしき、いとめでたき時間となりました。この勉強会は毎週開かれており、私の大好きな居場所でもあります。
‘The Pillow Book’ is the source of inspiration of Japanography (an expressive activity writing and lecturing Japanese culture in English and Japanese bilingual) that I create and research. I prepared for the lecture from 2 months ago little by little. And I had a big rehearsal for 2 solid hours with my friend who is gentlewoman and caretaker of the study group 3 days before of the due day. And I had an unexpected advice that I ought to change the content substantially.
『枕草子』は、私が創作し研究対象としているジャパノグラフィー®️（日本文化をバイリンガルで綴り講義する表現活動）の着想の元であり、この発表のために二ヶ月前から少しずつ準備をして練習をして来ました。そして本番三日前に、この朝活の世話人である、宮中の女房である友人とガッツリ二時間に渡るリハを行いました。そして、内容を大幅に変更！という思いがけない助言を貰います。
First I was reading a script that is filled with too much information, she pointed out it is hard to figure out at once. She said I am good at speaking, so it’s more intriguing that I talk freely without reading the script and focus on the theme, then make it stimulative for the members and teach trivia, and mistranslation of ‘The Pillow Book’ is quite catchy so why not deepen there? And it will be amusing mentioning on New Year’s tradition, she said. The time of exchanging opinions was sheerly exciting, and my brain was circulating with the top speed. I assume a veteran editor will advice this sharply to a rising novelist.
内容を詰め込み過ぎた台本を読むのは、情報過多であり、一度聴いただけでは消化できない、と。私は話すのが得意だから、台本は見ずに自由に話した方が面白いし、内容も主題だけに絞り、朝活メンバーの知的好奇心をくすぐるものにして、豆知識を伝授して、『枕草子』と誤訳という視点は独特で面白いからそこを掘り下げてはどうか、それにお正月に因んだ話も入れてはどうか、と。敏腕編集者を相棒にして新進作家がモノを作り出して世に出す時には、こんな熱いやりとりが交わされるのだろう、とゾクゾクしながら脳味噌の方はフル回転です。
I’m so grateful that I get feedback to what I’m making. It’s often the case that if you’re absorbed in yourself, you tend to go too far leaving others all behind. So taking in other’s point of view to yourself is crucial when you are creating something.
作っているものに対してフィードバックを貰えるということは、とても有難いことです。独りよがりに突っ走ってしまうと、周りを置いてけぼりにしてしまうということはよくあることで、別の視点からの気づきを自分の中に取り込んでゆくことは、モノ作りにおいて非常に大切な点であるように思うのです。
After the rehearsal, I rearranged Power Point, thought about what to talk. The next day, I jotted down the content to talk on the Power Point scripts, noted the original text pages, and had an image training. I have a long career as a teacher, so I’m used to giving a lecture. And I’m good at real performance, I can give an ad lib spontaneously, by saying so to myself I was self-encouraging. And I did not have a practice to talk, I thought it would give more improvised effects. Yes, I’m good at under the spotlight.
リハが終わった後、早速パワポを練り直し、話す内容を考え、翌日はそのパワポに話したい内容を赤ペンでメモ書きして行き、読みたい原典の箇所もメモをし、イメトレに励みます。私は先生業が長いので講義をすることは慣れているし、本番にも強いし、即興でアドリブも出来るから大丈夫大丈夫、と自分を励ましつつ。そして敢えて喋る内容は発声練習をせず、ぶっつけ本番で話すことにしました。そちらの方が面白い即興性が生まれるのではないか、という勝負師の勘が働いたのです。

And after the lecture, I received many interesting questions and heartwarming comments. It was a big success in the jolly and merry atmosphere, commemorating new year. Regarding Q&A, I’d like to use for my doctoral thesis since they are valuable voices.
講演の後には沢山の面白い質問や心嬉しく励まされるコメントを頂き、とても愉快なめでたい雰囲気の中、新年初回の朝活発表は大成功でした。頂いた質疑応答については、貴重な生の声となるので博士論文に使わせて頂きたいと思っています。
I explained the reason why I love ‘The Pillow Book’, the inspirational colorful writing and the sense of humor and the enchanting world view are captivating me for so long. Moreover, Lady Sei Shonagon was not intending to be proud of her intelligence, rather than that she was determined to encourage Empress Chugu Teishi all her might. I’m fascinated with the genuine spirit.
私が『枕草子』が好きな理由は、その視覚優位な美しき描写の数々と、ユーモアのセンスと、「をかし」なる世界観に憧れてやまないからだということをお伝えしました。けれど清少納言は自分の賢しさを誇るためではなく、全身全霊で中宮定子を力づけたかったこと、その心意気に痺れているのだと。
And I shared a situation that when I learned ‘Spring Dawn’ of ‘The Pillow Book’ in junior high school, how I got an electrical shock. ‘Spring Dawn’ is a short essay, it is depicting 4 seasons looking up from inside when high class people are not allowed to walk outside freely. The changing season is written so picturesque. I assume Lady Sei Shonagon was able to capture something floating between A and B. And my teacher taught us the difference between mountain ridge and mountain surface. And the stunning beauty of mountain surface gradually getting white reflected upon dawn.
また、中学の授業で『春はあけぼの』を始めて学んだ時に電流が走った状況についてもお話ししました。『春はあけぼの』は400字ほどの内容で、自由に外歩きできない中で御簾から見上げた外の風景を書いているだけなのに、季節の移ろいの中で、あれだけのものを書けたということ。清少納言は二つの事柄があったとして、その間に漂うものも見えていたのではないか、という話もしました。また、授業で説明された山の端と山際の違い、その山際が朝日の反射で段々としらじんでゆく様の美しさについてもお話ししました。

In spring, the dawn is supreme. Mountain lines come to look clear from misty white. And purplish clouds are thinly floating making the lines a little brighter.
And it was such an honor that I was requested to make a lecture about Haruki Murakami for the next time. And it will be another exciting mountain to challenge. Already, I’ve got some ideas coming up in my mind. How should I introduce Haruki Murakami?
大変光栄なことに、次は村上春樹についての話を聞きたいとリクエストも頂いたので、こちらも腕が鳴ります。そしてもう、頭の中では次は村上春樹をどう料理しようかとアイディアが漂い始めているのです！
For video recording, my friend succeeded to film for 12 minutes, and she edited and sent me. By watching it, I looked so good having fun and exciting time. It was so lovely and exquisite that I was able to create precious time with the members celebrating new year. I am so thankful to have such a wonderful opportunity. Thank you very much. I appreciate from the bottom of my heart.
録画の方も12分ほど撮れたものを加工して送って貰えました。それを見返してみると、話している私自身が興に乗ってノリノリなので、新春を寿ぐめでたき時間を皆様と一緒に作ることが出来たこと、いとをかしなり。でございました。この様な素晴らしい機会を頂けたこと、心から感謝致します。ありがとうございました。
