Cold rain washed away Sakaura petals, spring storm passed through, and today, sunshine reflects upon young leaves beautifully. This is first spring for me that I appreciated one million Sakura trees blooming. In late March, I walked around the neighborhood every day to see cherry blossoms, and in April I had a business trip to Himeji to do technical interpreting. From the windows of local train and bullet train, stunning Sakura scenery of pale pink was spread ceaselessly, pleasing to eyes. And I arrived at Himeji. Before the job starts from the next day, I climbed up Himeji Castle.

桜を洗い流す冷たい雨が降り、春の嵐が過ぎた後、今日は若葉の木漏れ日が美しい。今年の春は、百万本の桜を愛でた初めての春だった。三月下旬には寒風の中、近所の桜を見に毎日毎日散歩をし、四月に入ってからは技術通訳の仕事のために姫路へ出張へ行ってきた。その道中、在来線と新幹線の車窓からは、目を喜ばせ頬をほころばせる薄紅の桜景色の絵巻物が、途切れることなく展開していた。そして姫路へ到着。翌日からの仕事の前に、姫路城へ登ってきた。

バスから姫路城が見える。嗚呼、胸が高鳴る。

It was my long dream to climb this castle that is carved in Japanese history. The dream came true for a bonus for the business trip. Cheers for my life that is filled with lucky events. Himeji Castle that is a national treasure as well as UNESCO world Heritage site has a nickname of White Heron Castle like the beautiful bird. And it’s closely connected with Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1537~1598). Japanese 3 prominent samurai lords are Oda Nobunaga (1534~1582), Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1537~1598), and Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543~1616), students learn this in elementary social studies class. It was pity I walked around the masterpiece architecture all alone, yet brimmed with amazement and excitement.

日本史に名を刻むこのお城へ登閣するのが長年の夢だった。その夢が出張のおまけでついてきた。何かとラッキーが多い、我が人生に乾杯だ。国宝でもあり世界遺産でもある、白鷺城の異名を持つ姫路城は豊臣秀吉(1537~1598)ゆかりの城だ。日本の戦国時代三大武将は、織田信長(1534~1582)、豊臣秀吉(1537~1598)、徳川家康(1543~1616)であると、小学校の社会科の授業で習う。城郭建築の白眉である白鷺城を、一人で廻るのはやっぱり少し味気がないけれど、それでもオドロキとトキメキは盃一杯に溢れている。

In front of the castle is an open space and anyone can enter for free. I walked in the wide premises, went by Sakura picnickers, and I’m ready to be off to the front.

お城の前は広場になっていて、誰でも無料で入ることが出来るようになっていた。そして広い敷地を歩き、地元の方々のお花見の宴を縫って、いざ城登りに出陣だ。

Himeji Castle is the place of Princess Sen’s (1597~1666) memories. Grand daughter of Tokugawa Ieyasu was used and married to Toyotomi Hideyori (1593~1615) when 7 for a political marriage. But after Toyotomi Hideyoshi passed away, husband of Princess Sen committed harakiri in Osaka Battle and the Toyotomi Family perished. Princess Sen was rescued from the blazing fire. And she encountered and remarried Honda Tadatoki (1596~1626) who was guarding her on the way back to Edo. They lived in Himeji Castle blessed with a boy and a girl, it is said the ten years with her husband Tadatoki was the happiest period for Princess Sen. However, the son passed away when 3 due to disease and husband Tadatoki the same when 31. Princess Sen went back to Edo Castle, cut hair and became a nun, she closed her life when 70 longing for loved ones.

白鷺城は千姫(1597~1666)の物語の地でもある。徳川家康の孫娘千姫は政の駒とされ、政略結婚で、僅か七歳の頃に大阪城の豊臣秀頼(1593~1615)の元へお輿入れをした。しかし豊臣秀吉の死後、大阪の陣で千姫の夫であった秀頼は自害し、豊臣家は滅亡の道をたどる。千姫は燃え盛る炎の中から助けられた。江戸城に帰る道中、その警護にあたっていた本田忠刻(1596~1626)と出会い再婚した。一男一女に恵まれ、千姫は夫・忠刻と暮らした姫路城での十年間が生涯で一番幸せであったと伝えられている。しかし長男が三歳で病で亡くなり、忠刻も三十一歳の若さで病に倒れた。江戸に帰った千姫は髪をおろして天樹院と号し、夫や息子を思いながら七十歳の生涯を閉じたという。

Current Himeji Castle is remodeled widely about 65 years ago. However, this pillar has been supporting Himeji Castle for over 400 years since establishment. I also patted the pillar since it’s one of a kind.

現在の白鷺城は、昭和の大改修で大々的に補修されたものであるそうだ。しかし、この柱は城が建てられた江戸時代初期から四百年以上の間、白鷺城を支え続けている。有難い柱であるそうなので、私もパシパシと叩いてきた。

Climbed the steep stairs up to 6th floor. There was a shrine at the top and people were praying.

急な階段を六階まで登った。天守閣には神社が祀られてあり、人々が参拝している。

After climbing the castle, I strolled around Japanese garden ‘Kokoen’ overlooked from Himeji Castle. You can visit this type of garden all across the country that is developed in Edo period (1600-1667). Originally, it was designed and constructed taking years to welcome Shogun and feudal lords. I studied a thesis of this Japanese garden surrounding a pond in a seminar of graduate school.

城登りの後は、白鷺城を望む日本庭園「好古園」を散策してきた。江戸時代に発達した、日本各地にある池泉回遊式庭園。それは元来、将軍やお殿様の御成（外出・来着の尊敬語）のために何年もかけて作られた庭園である。この池泉回遊式庭園についての論文を、大学院のゼミで読み議論した。

I used to recognize it as just a plain Japanese garden, however once learning the historical background, the image resolution is getting much higher. And it is directly linked with the delicacy that perceives richness of life. Cherishing the nature proceeding, listening to birds chirping, sensing sunshine and breeze, associating romanticism of history, and walking along the garden. It is filled with sheer preciousness.

ただの日本庭園だと受け止めていたものに、その様な歴史的背景があるのだということを知ると、目の前の景色の解像度がググッと上がってゆく。それは人生の豊かさを感じる心の幅へと直結している。自然の移ろいを愛でつつ、鳥の声を聞きつつ、陽の光と風を感じつつ、歴史の浪漫に思いを馳せつつ庭を歩くのは、本当に豊かな時間だ。

This ‘Kokoen’ garden is a famous shooting location of historical dramas and movies. I had a de ja vu here.

好古園は数々の歴史ドラマや映画のロケ地にもなっており、この渡り廊下には既視感があった。

Sakura petals are floating in the pond. This transient and exquisite view can be seen in this season only. Heart of Wabi Sabi, it can be.

桜の花びらが池に浮いている。この季節だけに見られる、儚くも美しい風景だ。これを侘び寂びの心というのかも知れない。

I walked around the huge premises and came back to the station on foot. Sugar became inadequate, so I enjoyed Matcha green tea ice cream sundae seeing White Heron Castle afar. That’s about it for Himeji Castle strolling afternoon. Pleasing and gratifying spring day, it was.

広い敷地を隈なく歩いて、そして駅までもテクテク戻ってきた。糖分が切れたので、遠方はるか白鷺城を鑑賞しながら、抹茶クリームあんみつとほうじ茶で午後のお茶の時間を愉しむの巻。そして姫路城歩きの午後を、これにてお開きに。誠に結構な春の一日でございました。
